Latveria is a fictional country appearing in American comic books published by

Marvel Comics. It is depicted within the storylines of Marvel's comic titles as a
small, isolated European country ruled by the fictional Supreme Lord Doctor Doom,
supposedly located in the Banat region. It is surrounded by the Carpathian
Mountains, and also borders fictional Symkaria (home of Silver Sable) to the south.
Its capital is Doomstadt.

Publication history
Latveria first appeared in Fantastic Four Annual #2, published in 1964. Victor von
Doom is the ruler of Latveria. Though he has been dethroned a number of times,
Victor has invariably managed to return to the throne of his country within a
matter of months.

Victor also has a council who obey him entirely. In Fantastic Four #536 in 2006, he
killed his own Prime Minister for claiming control of Latveria in his absence and
threatened to kill two other ministers if they failed to find the landing spot of
Thor's hammer.

Doctor Doom's style of rule can best be described as an absolute monarchy, as it

was revealed that there is no legislature, and one minister boasted "Doctor Doom
decides everything. His slightest whim is Latverian law!" It is shown Doom has
devices throughout the Kingdom to watch his people and even has hidden weapons to
prevent them leaving without his consent. In one story he is able to activate a
force field around Latveria which prevents anybody leaving, though apparently it
can be a defense against nuclear attack.[1]

History
Located in southeast Europe, Latveria was formed out of land annexed from southern
Hungary centuries before, and possibly land from Serbia as well[2] as Romania.[3]

At some point, Doctor Doom had his army of Servo Guards invade Rotruvia where he
was successful in its annexation.[4]

Latveria under the Fantastic Four

Due to Doom's undertakings that drive him away from Latveria, the monarch is often
absent. After Doom's descent into Hell, the nation became a target for conquest by
the neighbouring countries. This forces Reed Richards to seize control of the
country, attempting to pry the populace out from under the thumb of Doom, while at
the same time disarming all of Doom's weaponry and technology, so if he ever
returned, he would come back to absolutely nothing. In the process, Richards
relocated Doom from Hell into a pocket dimension of his own design, and although
Doom used his consciousness-switching abilities to escape, the death of his host
body seemingly caused him to die as well, and the Fantastic Four pulled out of the
country.

Doom survives this and rules Latveria for a time with a 'puppet' Prime Minister and
robotic enforcers.

Series of takeovers
After the Fantastic Four left, the United States attempted to fill the void left by
Doom by establishing a democracy for the nation. The Countess Lucia von Bardas was
elected as Prime Minister. However, when it was revealed that von Bardas was
employing the Tinkerer to use Doom's technology to arm various tech-based villains
in the United States, S.H.I.E.L.D. Commander Nick Fury took action.

During Secret War, Fury and a number of superheroes invaded Latveria without
permission of the US Government and attempted to assassinate von Bardas. While von
Bardas survived, she was horribly disfigured and sought to destroy Fury and the
heroes responsible. She was killed by S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Daisy Johnson while trying
to blow up New York with the armor of the various villains she employed.

Country-wide disasters
Much of Latveria was destroyed and the population severely reduced by an attack
executed by the Marquis of Death (a.k.a. "Dooms Master").

S.H.I.E.L.D., under the leadership of Iron Man and his team of U.S. sanctioned
Avengers invaded Latveria after discovering Doom's (unintentional) involvement in
the release of a symbiote virus on New York. The country was yet again devastated
and Doom was taken into custody for crimes against humanity.[5]

Doom is released from prison due to the influence of H.A.M.M.E.R. director Norman
Osborn. He restores his nation with the use of his time travel technology.[6]

During the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, Spider-Man fights against a Juggernaut-
empowered Colossus here.[7]

Statistics
The common geographic description of Latveria places it as a small nation, around
the area where Hungary, Romania and Serbia (Vojvodina) meet in real life. To its
south in the Marvel universe is the nation of Symkaria, which is depicted as a
benevolent constitutional monarchy in contrast to the dictatorship to its north.
The capital city of Latveria is Doomstadt, formerly Hassenstadt, renamed when Doom
seized power, located just north of the Kline River. The administrative center is
Castle Doom.

Population: 500,000 (This is an approximation since the government of Latveria has

been fiercely secretive of its census activity)
Type of Government: Dictatorship (Victor Von Doom prefers to call this an "enforced
monarchy")
Languages: German, Hungarian, English, Latverian (local dialect, derivative of
Hungarian), Romanian.[citation needed]
Ethnic Groups: Mixed European stock, Slavs, Roma, Greek, possibly Bulgarians who
migrated in Banat during the Ottoman rule in Bulgaria
Major Business Centers: None
Currency: Latverian Franc
Public Holidays: Doom's Day, Christmas, New Year (Note: Doom's Day is an eclectic
holiday, celebrated whenever Doom declares it. It is different from Doomsday and
independent of Doomsday)
Airports: The only airport for the country, Doomsport, lies on the southern
outskirts of Doomstadt. It maintains two runways and a modern terminal, but flights
into and out of Doomsport are quite limited. There have been no scheduled flights
from Latveria to western European nations or the United States, due to a
combination of Latveria's poor economy, international embargoes, and that no major
airline has seen profit in establishing a route to Latveria.

Demographics
The population consists of mixed European stock and Romani people, in whose welfare
Von Doom takes a particular interest. Victor Von Doom, being Roma, has declared the
Romani a protected class and attempts to shower them with benefits, however due to
Latveria's poor economy and oppressive rule their lifestyles hardly outshine other
ethnicities, and the Romani by and large live in the same fear of their own
government as do fellow Latverians.

Law enforcement
Because it lacks a native superhero populace, Latveria relies largely on Dooms'
robot sentinels called Doombots to keep law and order. One of the few known
Latverian superhumans is Dreadknight, whom Doom himself created by punishing
Dreadknight's alter ego for hoarding ideas from him. Dreadknight has since tried to
get revenge on Doctor Doom, only to be thwarted by various superheroes. Aside from
superhuman activity, the Latverian military appears to function in multiple
capacity; in addition to being responsible for defense of Latveria (or more
accurately, keeping Victor Von Doom on the throne), they have been commissioned to
make arrests and function as Latveria's secret police.

Economy
Much of Latveria's economy depends on Doctor Doom's high-tech inventions. The
country's official currency is the "Latverian Franc" - because Doctor Doom refuses
to join the European Union or adopt the Euro. The Latverian Franc is still
considered to be reasonably strong against the United States Dollar.[8]
State
Latveria is generally depicted as a rural nation with a primitive economy and a
population living an almost medieval lifestyle, likely enforced by Doom.
Nonetheless, the state itself is consistently depicted as a global superpower on-
par with or even surpassing any nation on Earth, including the United States, and
rivalled only by the likes of Wakanda. This is largely due to Doom himself being a
scientific genius of the highest order, not only possessing but actually inventing
numerous technological wonders, including time and interdimensional travel,
personally creating a highly sophisticated robot army of myriad designs and
capabilities, and frequently coming into possession of—or outright creating—various
devices that could be classified as Weapons of Mass Destruction. Thus, despite the
country being both extremely small and economically backward, it is a powerhouse in
military and technological terms and therefore has a vastly disproportionate
influence on global affairs relative to its size and GDP. Doom also proudly claims
that the country is free of poverty, disease, famine and crime and while citizens
of the nation are commonly shown to be oppressed and to live in fear of their
monarch, they are also shown to be relatively well cared for, so long as they do
not cross Doom. Other occasions suggest that Doom is at the centre of a self-
propagated personality cult and is admired and worshipped by other segments of the
populace in spite of his mistreatments and he is often demonstrated to be at least
a more stable and less corrupt ruler than any other Latverian leader who has
replaced him.

Symkaria, officially Symkrija Kiralysog (the Kingdom of Symkaria),[1] is a small

eastern European country within the Balkans. It had been conquered many times over
the centuries. It has maintained close ties to the nation of Latveria. Its capital
and largest city is Aniana.[2]

Origin
Symkaria has traditionally been a monarchical country with a royal bloodline
reaching back 300 years.[3][1]

In early years, a legion of Symkarian allegedly invaders attacked Latveria, which

was defended by Goran the Immutable with only thirty Latverian warriors.[4]

20th Century
Petrio's rule
During the Balkan War of 1913, the country was ruled by King Petrio, and struggled
to avoid annexation by any of its neighbors, and especially Transylvania. A shwred
negotiator, Petrio was able to set key treaties (documents collectively known as
the Independence Treaty of Symkaria) before the end of the war to ensure Symkaria's
safety. Those documents came to form the foundation of this century's diplomatic
policies.[3]
During World War I, still under King Petrio, Symkaria was nearly absorbed by its
neighbors, but instead cared out its independence.[1]

World War II: Phillip's rule

During World War II, the country was ruled by Pietro's descendant King Phillip, and
once again was threatened. Joining forces with neighboring Latveria, and though the
country was occupied in Eptrios, it avoided total conquest,[1] preventing full
occupation of their country by the Nazis, albeit at great cost:[5] about 1200
citizens were killed.

In the aftermath, Symkaria also prevented its absorption into the USSR,[3][1] as
for Latveria.[3]

Cold War
During the Cold War, Symkaria and Latveria formed a sort of bubble free from Soviet
domination, though one assumes that it was chiefly a product of Latverian might.
[citation needed]

Puternicstan's invasion
Decades from now, when Strelonivich was six years old, the Symkarian tanks invaded
the contested land of Puternicstan. Their soldiers killed and raped, and treated
the locals no better than animals. The Latverians replaced them four years later,
then the Soviets, whose occupation brought a relative rest in comparison.[6]

Operation: Pack Animal

At some point, the C.I.A. launched Operation: Pack Animal in Symkaria,[7] with an
unspecified goal.

Wild Pack
The horrors wrought by the Nazis against the Symkarian population prompted the
creation of an organization called the Wild Pack right after the war. Intelligence
minister Ernst Sablinov ran the Wild Pack with the help of his brother Fritz
Sablinova, and this organization became reputed for its discipline, commitment, and
paramilitary skill of the long Symkarian martial tradition.[8]

Aniana from Secret Avengers Vol 1 19 0001

Anastasia was born and raised in Symkaria. As a child she saved the life of one of
her classmates, Eva Slougart, and the two became lifelong friends. As an adult she
opened a bakery and it was there she met Ernst Sablinov, who saved her life from a
burning barn. The two later fell in love and married,[9] resulting in a baby girl,
Silver.[8] Anastasia was later murdered by Ivan Trevkov, who was in charge of the
German operation.[8] Anastasia was buried in Symkaria, with her tombstone reading
"Anastasia Sablinova, beloved wife and mother."[9] Silver joined the Wild Pack and
spent several years training before her first field operation. She would always
remember the promise she made to her dying mother.[10] Silver came to believe that
Trevkov had also killed her father.[8] Eventually, Silver cold-bloodedly murdered
Trevkov, but she discovered that revenge fulfilled was not enough to change her
perception of life.[11]

Ivan's daughter Silver Sablinova took over the Wild Pack, turning them into a
mercenary unit. She led them on missions throughout the world including the United
States of America, where the were based out of the Symkarian Embassy.[5]

Silver Sable and Spider-Man foiled a robbery of the Symkarian government payroll.
They returned to King Stefan's castle (where the Royal Jubilee was taking place)
and met with Symkarian Prime Minister Limka who told them of another possible lead.
Silver Sable decided to stay with the king, since none of Limka's leads had paid
off. Limka met with U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M. agent Major Weil and the two plotted King
Stefan's death. Wearing a tuxedo over his costume, Spider-Man attended the Jubilee
Gala and chatted with Silver Sable. The next day, U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M. agents
attacked Symkaria, killing the King's fiancee. Sabretooth killed Limka, unseen by
anyone else. Silver Sable killed the U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M. assassins. Limka's body was
discovered, with Sable wondering if he was the target all along. A torn piece of
clothing was found near the body with a Panadoxin capsule nearby (a suicide drug
used exclusively by the CIA).[12] The US ambassador arrived in Symkaria, greeted by
a hostile crowd. Once inside King Stefan's castle, he spoke with Prime Minister
Gallatik, and also tried to calm down Sable. She had found evidence which made her
think the CIA was involved in the King's assassination attempt. Spider-Man tried to
help, but the American ambassador threw him out. He then gave a statement to
reporters outside. Captain America arrived and put Sable at ease. Cap asked Spider-
Man to join him and Sable in a raid of U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M.'s hideout, but they were
interrupted by Solo who had arrived to kill Weil. Cap stopped Solo, explaining they
needed Weil alive, but Weil escaped in the confusion. Sable interrogated a captured
U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M. agent and learned that Sabretooth killed Limka. She was informed
that tensions between Symkaria and the USA were rising and the American ambassador
had been recalled. The next step could be war.[13]

Silver Sable, Spider-Man, and Sandman's crew took on Hydra who took Anna, Silver
Sable's niece, captive at her private school.[5] Sable had her annual diplomatic
dinner with Doctor Doom,[2] and later took down Dmitri Petrovich.[14]

The Thunderbolts traveled to Symkaria in the hunt for the "Crimson Cowl" who they
believed was the Silver Sable.[15] Hawkeye tracked the Cowl to Symkaria and it
turned out to be Justine Hammer.[16]

After five mission failures, and suspicions of treachery among her ranks, Silver
Sable handed the Wild Pack to Andreas Vadas[17] who corrupted its purpose, funding
an operation to create sleeper agents around the world, but was defeated by Silver
Sable joined by Dominic Fortune.[18]

At some point, Doom intended to marry Princess Lenka of Symkaria and make her queen
of Latveria. Lenka's father had offered her to Doom to cement political bonds
between their countries, while Doom was after her magical potential, as she was to
become mother of the next Sorcerer Supreme, or attain the title herself. Opposed by
Silver Sable, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man, Doom even went to the extent of
attacking the Symkarian Embassy in New York City to prevent the wedding of Lenka
with Marek, but withdrew when the wedding had been performed.[19]

21th century
Revolution
At some point, Symkaria fell into chaos,[20] due to a very violent revolution.

When Symkaria fell, the Symkarian Embassy in New York City closed, and Silver Sable
bought the building anonymously to use it incognito, intending to give it back once
her country was restored.[21]

Doomwar spillovers
During the war between Wakanda and Latveria, Shuri gathered all their forces in
Symkaria, at the border with Latveria. Officially, she had been invited to advise
them on international terrorism when, actually, Symkaria owed Wakanda billions, and
Shuri proposed to "renegotiate the terms of their loan".

At Shuri's demand, Doom and his army of Wakandan Vibranium-powered Doombots crossed
the border and met with the Wakandan forces and their allies in the Field of Lotho.
Doom, refusing to stand down, lead T'Challa to use shadow physics to render all
Wakandan Vibranium inert, defeating Doom and imposing the end of the war on him.
[22]
Destabilized Symkaria
With its economy collapsing and its infrastructure crumbling, Symkaria became the
seat of an emergent narcocracy while the capital city of Aniana served as a base
for arms dealer Voydanoi, who sold bones of one of the Many-Souled Ones (whose
grave was found in Transia) which could be smoked to obtain their powers, until
Commander Steve Rogers and his Secret Avengers managed to defeat him and his men.
[23]

Puternicstan unrest
After the contested land Puternicstan discovered Uranium under its soil, Symkarian
troops massed on the border, and Latveria seemingly advanced on Romanian territory,
prompting NATO[24] and the U.N. to declare a no-fly zone to prevent a conflict over
Puternicstan in the territorial dispute opposing Latveria and Symkaria,[25] with
War Machine there to represent both NATO and the U.S. Government.[24] Meanwhile,
the Puternicstan governor had commandos steal black-market Sentinels, prompting the
attention of the X-Men.[24]

As soon as a Sentinel was spotted in Puternicstan, Symkarian air-fighters violated

their air-space and the no-fly zone was cancelled, the U.N. considering that
Symkaria had every right it take steps to defend itself. As War Machine and the X-
Men tried to take the Sentinel program down, it was proof-tested (to be able to
designate any target as mutant for the Sentinels to attack) by attacking War
Machine.

From then, the governor turned toward the invasion of Symkaria[6] (which would be
followed by attacks on every bordering nation, as a show of strength to guaranty
Puternicstan's safety). As a result, many nuclear powers, including China and
Russia, put their nuclear assets on alerts.

To stop the Sentinel Army and prevent confrontation with Symkarian air-fighters,
Storm summoned a hurricane in their path[26] to stop them just before they reached
the Symkarian border.

The actions of the X-Men, War Machine, and General Nobakov led to the destruction
of every single Sentinel, cancelling the threat to Symkaria, then to the
destitution of the governor and the stabilization of the region as Nobakov was
installed as Puternicstan's new leader.[27]

Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1 679 001
Silver Sable gives Spider-Man a "reward"

In New York City, Flag-Smasher tried to disrupt a "Symkarian Pride Parade" with a
nuclear bomb, but was stopped by Silver Sable and Spider-Man. She kissed Peter as a
reward for deactivating the bomb, on behalf of Symkaria.[28]

Later Doctor Octopus hired Mysterio and Chameleon to distract Spider-Man and Silver
Sable by making them believe Symkaria had been burned by Doc Ock's satellites. When
they realized Symkaria's destruction was fake, they convinced the villains to
switch sides as their money would be worthless if Ock destroyed the world.[29]

When Doctor Octopus tried to destroy the world, Silver saved Spider-Man and Black
Widow from the Sinister Six. Together with Spidey, Sable rushed to Octavius'
underwater base only to be stopped by the Rhino. The unmovable villain gripped her
to the floor, promising not to move while the water level rose. Sable ordered
Spider-Man to leave her behind and pursue Doc Ock on his own.[30] By activating her
suit's stealth coating, Sable tricked Rhino into thinking she had vanished, giving
her the advantage necessary to break free.
From that point on, Sable decided to use the popular belief that she was dead to
her advantage, hunting down her enemies one by one.[31]

At that point, Symkaria's internal security was ensured by Internal Defense, led by
Alexie Sablinova, one of the most successful counterrevolutionary minds of the
planet, who held his country down.[32]

The CircleNew Avalon (Symkaria) from Iron Man Vol 5 2 001

The Circle created an Arthurian-inspired organization located on New Avalon. Iron
Man was invited to New Avalon by The Circle as soon as they learned he was on the
hunt for the Extremis sets sold by A.I.M., one of which The Circle was using to
upgrade the pilots of their Knight-Suits.[33]

Loki teleported Mr. Sinister and himself to Symkaria after Sinister stole a DNA
sample from Latveria.[34]

The National Force led by the Hate-Monger tried to detonate a Madbomb, but were
stopped by Captain Marvel, Captain America (Steve Rogers), Black Panther, and
Vision, thanks to the visions of Ulysses. While not complaining about the results,
the Symkarian government (as others) asked to be more involved in situations within
their borders and questioned the methods used.[35]

Narco and human traffickers managed to draw a new path across the country to
connect the Near East with the West, battling United Nations troops by using alien
drones provided by the Zoo Family.[36]

Countess Katarina Karkov's rule

Unfortunately, the citizens of Symkaria were also affected by the deception of
Sable's death, with their fear allowing the last living royal, Countess Karkov, to
rise to power.[31] Karkov allied herself with Norman Osborn and exploited the
resources of Symkaria, turning the country into a weapons-making war machine for
Osborn's Goblin Army, enslaving Symkaria's people,[37] every man, woman, and child,
in the process.[31]

At some point, the government of Symkaria enrolled in Roxxon's Meteorological

Embetterment Program, ensuring some control over its meteorological status.[38]

After the Kaiju Kalamity involving Red Hulk and American Kaiju in Lichtenbad and
Latverian territory, Symkaria demanded answers.[39]

With the help of a new Wild Pack (Tango, Juliet, X-Ray, Foxtrot, and Romeo; her
generals, each leading their own battalion of freedom fighters, some from Symkaria,
others from around the world, including Delvadia, Nadua, and other war-torn regions
due to Osborn's actions) Sable began to work from the shadows opposing Osborn and
Karkov's plans.[31] While trying to assassinate Osborn at a charity event in Hong
Kong, Sable came face-to-face with Spider-Man.[40] Silver Sable and Spider-Man
formed an alliance once again in order to take down both of their enemies, with
Parker Industries' resources invested in the fight (putting them at odds with
S.H.I.E.L.D., tasked with stopping them as their actions was an invasion of a
sovereign nation).[37]

The Parker Industries plane, in fact an empty decoy, landed at the northern border
of Symkaria, and was quickly boarded by S.H.I.E.L.D. troops. Meanwhile, a second
and unmarked plane landed at the Southern border with Spider-Man, Sable, and the
equipment. Deploying the Wild Pack's troops (reinforced by Mockingbird defecting
from S.H.I.E.L.D.), they targeted factories, freeing the workers and bombing the
plants. They then faced the Goblin Army while Osborn unveiled his plans to turn all
Symkarians into more Goblins.
While Mockingbird and the Wild Pack were able to disarm the missile carrying the
Goblin serum and evacuate the city, where the people refused to leave, Sable and
Spider-Man stormed Castle Karkov. Sable challenged Karkov and Spider-Man confronted
Osborn, leading to the former's defeat and the latter's escape. After the fight,
Symkaria was left free of them.[31]

Recovery
The aftermaths were without chaos, as Parker Industries and the Uncle Ben
Foundation worked tirelessly to provide humanitarian aid.[41]

The neo-nazi terrorists of the Symkarian Supremacist Sisterhood (S.S.S.), led by

Ulka Belyakova, rose. Among their actions were the capture of a boat full of
refugees who were seeking asylum, using them as leverage to demand the release of
the "Symkarian patriot" Demyan Burya (Belyakova's boyfriend) from Symkarian
custody. Silver Sable confronted them after terminating her contract, Franka Kraus,
a nurse that had operated at Ravensbruck, while the Symkarian Armed Forces arrived
to rescue the prisoners (Ulka was possibly killed by one of her own, Syckle, that
had defected from her).[42]

Latverian Conquest
Following a failed attempt to imprison Doctor Doom by framing him for a staged
terrorist attack, Doom returned to power and agreed to help the world's leaders in
dealing with the black hole created by the attack, but on the condition that he
could invade Symkaria. The war was brief, and Symkaria was successfully made part
of Latveria.[43]

Symkaria from Secret Avengers Vol 1 19 001
Symkaria localization seems to have retconned over the years. The country is
landlocked in the Northern Balkans and shares borders with Serbia, Transylvania,
Latveria:
One account present Symkaria to be bordered to north-east by Latveria, to the east
by Transylvania and on the rest of his border (north, west, south) by
Serbia/Montenegro.[1]
Another map presents Latveria as being on the north-west border, Transylvania at
north-east and Transia at east, while Serbia borders the country at west and south.
[23]
Yep another map seems to engulf Transia and Transylvania among Romania, while the
area around the Serbian/Latverian border correspond to Puternicstan,[6] a contested
land near the Symkaria and Latveria borders,[24] disputed by the two countries.[25]
Symkaria also shares with this country the border of Lichtenbad.[39]

Colossus also hinted Transylvania was to the West of the Latveria-Symkaria region.
[24]

Languages
The major languages in Symkaria are Hungarian and Symkarian[1] (which is also used
in Transia[46] and Belgriun).[47]

Demographics
The population was estimated around 1.5 million inhabitants around 2007,[1] then
somehow climbed to 3 million in 2012.[23]

Economy
The monetary unit used in Symkaria is the Symkarian Franc.

Its major resources are coal and iron ore, but also mercenaries, machinery, nuclear
power, watchmaking, toys, car, & jet manufacturing.[1]

Symkaria is an extremely poor country, they have very few natural resources. They
have survived thanks to Silver Sable International, a company set up by the
Sablinova family with the support of the King and Parliament. They are a mercenary
group whose contracts have been able to support the dwindling economy.[citation
needed] The Wild Pack Headquarters were considered to be the economic heart of the
nation.[17]

Belgriun maintained strong economic relations with Symkaria.[47]

Over the years the infrastructure began to crumble with large amount of drug
trafficking the country plunged into a economic depression.[23]

Although, T'Challa considered Symkaria rich, mentioning that Alexie Sablinova had
the diamond market and the European Central Bank on his side.[32]

Under the leadership of Countess Katarina Karkov and Norman Osborn, Symkaria became
the largest weapons manufacturer in Europe, if not the world.[31]

National defenses
The national defense of Symkaria is ensured by the Symkarian Armed Forces, composed
of the Ground Forces and Air Force, together numbering 2,000 active members.

The Wild Pack(an international mercenary force) has often been employed for
national security.[1]

Symkaria's internal security was ensured by Internal Defense, led by Alexie

Sablinova, one of the most successful counterrevolutionary minds of the planet.[32]

Criminality
Symkarian narco- and human traffickers led by Grayle Kenton worked with the Zoo
Family, and were in conflict with Nigandan arms dealers whom they accused to have
interfere into one of the operations (which the Nigandans denied).[48] Using alien
drones provided by the Zoo Family to battle the United Nations troops, they managed
to draw a new path across the country to connect the Near East with the West.[36]

Laws
A law on the firing of people was passed by the Parliament, stating that an
employer had to have documentation of at least three written warnings before firing
an employee.[17]

Politics
The seat of government was originally ruled from the Royal Palace located in Aniana
the capital city.

While the Symkarian throne had had an uninterrupted bloodline of monarchs for three
centuries up to the revolution,[49][1] in the late 1950s the country became a
parliamentary monarchy, with the royals as official spokespersons for both the
country and the people, but both the monarchy and the parliament gave their full
support to the then-recently-created Wild Pack in their Nazi huntings. The maximum
authority in the country is the Prime Minister, who also leads the parliament, with
the King serving as official Head of State and Second Executive Minister (with the
Prime Minister superceding him or her). The King's voice and presence was heard in
the parliament. The parliament, including many anti-Nazi speakers from the areas
that had been occupied by Germany during World War II, soon built three main
political factions:[49]

The Brown Party, supporters of the light industry and of the working class,
especially the loggers in the west and north of the country (which does not include
the logging interest in the southern city of Kronlia),[49]
The Free Democrats, who lost a great amount of support due to the links of P.M.
Klaus Limka with terrorist group ULTIMATUM[49]
and the Loyalists, who supported the monarchy and the tourism industry, and had the
maximum support.[49]
Elections took place every three years, or before if the Prime Minister demanded
it; and the Prime Minister's cabinet included Ministries of Commerce and Finance,
Defense, Industry, Intelligence and Tourism. All the positions, except for the P.M.
and the King, had a term limit of twelve years.[49]

This apparently changed after the revolution.

International relations
Symkaria was a close ally of Bosqueverde, France,[1] Latveria[50] (apart from a
territorial dispute over Puternicstan),[25] Mexico, Norway, Russia (although Wild
Pack operations have occasionally set the two countries at odds), UK, USA
(including Wild Pack operations for the CIA), Wakanda, and Belgriun,[1] who
maintained strong both economic and diplomatic relations with Symkaria.[47]

They were members of the European Union, Interpol, UNESCO, and World Trade
Organization.[1]

Member of the United Nations, they had political envoys sent across the globe such
as the Symkarian Embassy in the United States of America,[51] which was closed as
the countries fell into chaos due to the revolution.[21]

Latveria, officially Kingdom of Latveria is a small eastern European country within

Europe. Its capital and largest city is Doomstadt. It was ruled by Dr. Victor von
Doom aka Doctor Doom.
14th Century
During the 14th century, along with Rudolfo Haasen, Karl Haasen captured territory
from Transylvania and founded Latveria. Rudolfo became its first king, King Rudolfo
I, and Karl became royalty Baron Karl Hassen.[3]

15th Century
After the death of Baron Karl Haasen III in 1447, Vlad Draasen ascended to the
throne of Latveria, and his difficult rule divided the country (until 1544, when
the Bolgorad Treaties restored the Haasen bloodline to the throne).[3]

16th Century
In 1588 AD, Count Sabbat and King Stefan I began the construction of a castle (who
would become the Castle Doom) and a second was constructed in 1593 (now Citadel of
Doom).[3]

Early 20th Century

World War II
During World War II, the Fortunov Family retained control on the throne. The latest
king was Vladimir Vassily Gonereo Tristian Mangegi Fortunov, Baron of Sabbat, Baron
of Haasen, Baron of Krozi. Even then, the country was a technological leader and
Baron Wolfgang von Strucker solicited their help in exchange for not overrunning
the country with Nazis.[4][verification needed]

Latveria forged an alliance with Symkaria, and the two nations resisted Strucker's
invading forces.[3]

Although Latveria was spared from the Nazi war machine, the Fortunov took notes on
leadership from Adolf Hitler.[4][verification needed]

Modern Age
Reign of the Fortunov Family
After the war Fortunov became an even more ruthless leader, in which he began
persecuting the local Romani clans.[5] One of the clans, the Zefiro, had one of the
greatest healers in Europe; Werner von Doom and his wife Cynthia a practitioner of
magic. They gave birth to their son Victor von Doom shortly before Cynthia's death.
[5] Cynthia became fed up with the constant persecution of her people and made a
pact with the demon Mephisto for more power in exchange for her soul. The spell
gave her power and she wiped out an entire town, including its women and children,
something that horrified Cynthia. She later fell by one of the King's soldiers.[6]
Other prominent Zefiro's were Werner's best friend Boris[5] and his granddaughter
Valeria, whom was friends and later the lover of Victor.[7]

Doomstadt from Mighty Thor Vol 1 410 001

Years later, Werner was asked by the King to try and cure his wife of cancer. When
he failed he took himself and Victor into the Latverian Alps to flee retribution.
While they escaped imprisonment, by the time Boris and the others found them,
Werner had suffered severe frostbite and later died of exposure. Before his death,
Werner had Boris promise to look after Victor. Furious over the death of his
parents, Victor found his mothers trunk of arcane objects and began studying both
magic and science. He became a thorn in the King's side for years until he was
asked to study at State University in the United States of America. There Victor
became obsessed with contacting the afterlife resulting in an accident that scared
his face. He later returned to Latveria in an iron suit and calling himself Doctor
Doom.[5] With his advanced skills in science and sorcery he gathered his people
together and overthrew the King, slaying him and taking over Latveria for his own.
[8]

Reign of Doom
During Doom's long rule of the country, the Zefiro were no longer persecuted and
likely dispersed among the general population.

Rotruvia's annex
Early in his rule, Doctor Doom built a weapon of mass destruction with the intent
to intimidate and annex Rotruvia, the small neighboring country whose entire
economy depended on the exportation of Molynite, of which 94% of the global export
corresponded to them, a power source irreplaceable for potential future electronic
innovations and weaponry.

The Avengers questioned whether or not they should intervene. On Thor's suggestion,
they sought the help of omniscient Asgardian god Heimdall, who informed the heroes
that if they acted against Doom, they would win the battle but lose the war.

Having chosen to interfere regardless of Heimdall's warning, the Avengers were

transported by the Asgardian gatekeeper to the battlefield, and aided the Rotruvian
army (far lesser in numbers and already suffering casualties). The heroes stopped
Doom and destroyed his weapon. However, a failsafe measure caused it to disperse an
alchemical radiation that eliminated every trace of Molynite in their land. In
order to avoid an economic meltdown, Rotruvia's regent (under the protection of the
Avengers) was forced to accept Doom's terms of surrender and the country was
annexed.[9]

Puternicstan's invasion
When Strelonivich was ten years old, the Latverian army replaced a four-year
Symkarian occupation of the contested land of Puternicstan. They seemingly
oppressed the locals as much as the Symkarians, and when the Soviets came, their
occupation brought a relative rest in comparison.[10]

...
At some point, Doom intended to marry a local princess, Princess Lenka of Symkaria
and make her queen of Latveria. Lenka's father had offered her to Doom to cement
political bonds between their countries, while Doom was after her magical
potential, as she was to become mother of the next Sorcerer Supreme, or attain the
title herself. Opposed by Silver Sable, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man, Doom even
went to the extent of attacking the Symkarian Embassy in New York City to prevent
the wedding of Lenka with Marek, but withdrew when the wedding had been performed.
[11]

To this day Boris remains ever faithful to Doom, while Valeria was killed by Doom
and her skin fashioned into a suit of enchanted armor.[12] Doom has kept the nation
protected from international affairs and economic downturns. Doom's personal
patents in the field of high technology and specially robotics are the main export
of the country.[citation needed]

Though he has been dethroned a number of times, von Doom has inevitably managed to
return to the throne of his country and restore the nation to economic prosperity
within a matter of months.[citation needed]

Despite (or perhaps because of) its complete lack of a native super-hero populace,
Latveria boasts an unparalleled rate of safety. The nation was policed by guardian
robots designed and manufactured by Doctor Doom himself. Due to Doom's constant
activities that drove him away from Latveria, the monarch was often absent.
[citation needed]

After Doom's descent to Hell at the hands of the Fantastic Four, the nation became
a target for conquest by the neighboring countries. Iron Man alluded to the fact
that several dictators might have attempted to rule Latveria in Doom's absence or
that, while Doom went through one of his famous disappearances, other people might
take over before Doom came back and deposed them.[13][citation needed] Doom also
used Doombots, robotic versions of himself, to keep the peace while he was away.

Andro, the first of an android army, developed a mind of its own, and refused to

robotic brethren.[citation needed]

The Marquis of Death a mysterious inter-dimensional traveler, known as the Marquis

of Death, whom destroyed much of Latveria and severely reduced the population. The
damage he caused was altered by Doom's use of time travel, and the Marquis himself
was killed by Doom for the attack.[citation needed]

Red Skull has been able on two occasions to occupy Latveria, but these coups were
undone within days.[citation needed]

The Fantastic Four once occupied Latveria, but surrendered the country in the face
of mounting international pressure.[citation needed]

Doomwar
During the Doomwar, Latveria entered in conflict with the Kingdom of Wakanda. The
relations between the two countries are vague, it is know that the two kingdoms
maintained a treaty of unknown form (i.e. trade or non-aggression pact). When
Wakanda refused a proposed alliance by Doom, on the grounds that neither the King
(Black Panther) or Queen Consort (Storm) of Wakanda could trust Doom,[14] Doom
invaded the country for its rich natural resource of Vibranium. This conflict
effectively destroyed any former treaties or alliances.[citation needed]

After the contested land Puternicstan discovered Uranium in its soil, Symkarian
troops massed on the border, and Latveria seemingly advanced on Romanian territory,
prompting the NATO[15] and UN to declare a no-fly zone, to prevent a conflict over
Puternicstan in the territorial dispute opposing Latveria and Symkaria.[16]
Despite the no-fly zone, the Symkarians

Doom's Abdication
After the multiverse restoration, and following a change of heart that accompanied
having his facial features restored,[17] Victor von Doom abdicated the throne of
Latveria.[18] Doom put in charge the top military mind in the country, General
Karadick, who had agreed to help restructure the government and turn the country
into a free state, so he could then relinquish power to a democratically-elected
leader.[19]

Doomstadt from Infamous Iron Man Vol 1 4 003

War-torn Latveria

Temporary regime of General Karadick

However, under General Karadick's leadership, the country fell into a civil war
under the actions of rebels and revolutionaries, and became a vulnerable target of
attacks from neighboring countries.[18] The two warring factions in this war were
the conservative terrorist group Doom's Children led by Octavio von Bardas[20]
(protecting their views of Doom's legacy) and the radical Latverian New Prosperity
Alliance (promoting the end of Doom's laws).[21] The struggle between the two
groups, presented as terrorists, was central into the US presidential elections.
[20][21] Clashes between both forces provoked great damages as Loki (then US
presidential candidate) led to Latverian New Prosperity Alliance to obtain Doom-
issued weapons, when opposed by Doom's Children, use them with literally explosive
consequences, killing dozens including Doom's Children's leader Octavio von
Bardass.[21] This temporary also regime didn't cooperated with S.H.I.E.L.D.[18]

US protection
Latveria soon fell under United States protection (announced by the deployment of
War Machine) until a preliminary democratic government could be implemented.[22]
When Doom traveled to Latveria for personal matters, he was disgusted by the state
of his country, confronted General Karadick, and ordered him to locate professor
Angela Kror, who would be an excellent chancellor to help him put together a proper
government structure.[19]

Failed Democracy
International arms and drugs dealer Geraldo Lucky facilitated Lucia von Bardas'
return to the country, and she improved the nation's infrastructure to garner
support from the troops.[23] With the objective to consolidate Latveria as a world
power, von Bardas orchestrated a terrorist attack on a gala at the Smithsonian
which almost killed S.H.I.E.L.D.'s second-in-command Sharon Carter.[24] With
S.H.I.E.L.D.'s hands tied due to lack of actual proof to blame von Bardas for the
attack, Carter convinced rookie superhero Ironheart to confront von Bardas on her
own as third party unaffiliated to S.H.I.E.L.D.[25]

Williams' intervention proved to be more efficient than expected. Not only did the
young hero defeat von Bardas in combat, but also declared herself Latveria's new
monarch,[26] gaining the support of General Karadick and the army due to her
empathy for their situation. When S.H.I.E.L.D. met up with Ironheart, Williams de-
escalated tensions between the army and civilians, and subsequently had Carter
agree to her list of demands, which namely consisted of helping improve the quality
of life of Latverians. Ironheart subsequently abdicated, leaving Latveria close to
holding its first free elections.[27]

The Latverian democracy failed, and the country ultimately fell into the hands of a
tyrant president for life. Even though Doom had returned to Castle Doom, he had
secluded himself and paid no attention to the struggle of his nation. The leader of
the resistance, Zora Vukovic, infiltrated Castle Doom to confirm the rumors of
Doom's return and beg for his help. Though he was initially unwilling, Zora's words
inspired Victor to pull himself together and confront the despotic forces causing
pain to Latveria's citizens.[28]

The location of Latveria seems to have been retconned over the years:
One account states it is bordered by Serbia/Montenegro (at west), Romania (at north
and east), Transylvania (at south-east) and Symkaria (at south-west).[1]
Another one presents it landlocked by Hungary at the west and north-west,
Transylvania at east and Serbia on the south.[29]
Another map confirms the position of Latveria and Symkaria in the junction between
Romania, Hungary and Serbia, while also showing Latveria as separated from Serbia
by Puternicstan,[10] a territory disputed between Symkaria and Latveria.[15]
Another Latverian map showed the cities of Radauti, Suceava, Campulung, Falticeni
and Pascani.[30] These are real places in the Bukovina/Moldavia region of north-
eastern Romania.
In 1937 the Orient Express passed through Hassenstadt (later Doomstadt),[31] which
would support a location in the north of the Banat region between Romania, Hungary
and Serbia, but not a location south of the Carpathians.
It shares with Symkaria the border of Lichtenbad.[32]

Colossus also hinted Transylvania was located to the west of the Latveria-Symkaria
region.[15]

It formerly bordered Rotruvia, which Doom annexed at the early times of his rule.
[9]

Surrounded by the Carpathians to the north and the Malhela range to the south,
Latveria has remained protected from the strife of neighboring countries.[1]

Languages
The major languages of Latveria are; German, Hungarian, Latverian (a local dialect
of Hungarian) and Romany (an Indic language of the Romani, spoken in many
dialects).[1]

Economy
The monetary unit used in Latveria is the Latverian Franc.[1]

Doom's personal patents in the branch of technology that deals with the design,
construction, operation, and application of robots. Doom is known to export patents
of his robots to other countries in favour of the public treasury of his country,
however these patents are generally outdated by Doom's standards and the latest
designs are kept for himself and the Latverian Army. Furthermore, many (if not all)
of Doom's robots feature a self-destruct device, so that Doom can personally
destroy them should they be used against him. Doom's personal patents in the branch
of physics and technology concerned with the design of circuits using transistors
and microchips, and with the behavior and movement of electrons in a semiconductor,
conductor, vacuum, or gas.[citation needed]

The capital city of Latveria is "Hassenstadt" later renamed Doomstadt, located just
north of the Klyne River. The alocdministrative center is Castle Doom.[1]

For centuries the nation had been ruled by the Fortunov family as an absolute
monarchy. The later adopted a constitutional monarchy with the Prime minister being
no more then a puppet to the king. This however came to an end when Doctor Doom
took over his native land. Internationally Doctor Doom's rule and regime is
recognized as a Dictatorship, this is due to the combined factors of Doom's rule
with total power over the country and his obtainment of power by force. In practice
and by his own admission, Doom's rule is that of an Absolute Monarch, or as Doom
prefers to call it an "Enforced Monarchy".

He created his own nation holiday "Doom's Day" an eclectic holiday, celebrated
whenever Doom declares it.[1]

The day chosen by Doom as the anniversary of Latveria's founding was his mother's
birthday.[37]

They are now a member of the United Nations.[citation needed] This allowed them to
have political envoys across the globe such as the Latverian Embassy in the United
States of America.[citation needed]

EducationVictor von Doom (Earth-616) from Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol 2 22

Latverian travel passport

Education in Latveria, seems to be provided for by the government (in this case
Doom), based on Doom's mention of education being universal in Doomwar when showing
Earth under his control to the Panther Goddess (Bast); thus one can assume that if
Doom provides universal education when he rules the world, then he would provide it
in Latveria. However, the education is most likely controlled by Doom, and thus
various subjects and taught concepts are most likely censored.[1] However given
Doom's substantial intellect and appreciation for the arts it's likely science,
mathematics, technology, history and art are core subjects. It's a requirement to
graduate from high school regardless of the discipline to memorize the body
schematics and the code required to produce core Doombot engrams, for which,
essentially, every Latverian high school graduate should be able to know how to
build a Doombot.[38]

TechnologyDue to technological advancements far beyond anything in any other nation

Latveria has managed to remain unfouled by industrial pollutants. Because of Doom's
many weapons and his mere presence in Latveria the country is considered a world
superpower. See Doctor Doom's robots.[citation needed]

Trivia
"Doomesque" is part of the Latverian lingo. It's essentially the equivalent of the
colloquial use of "cool."[38]
"May Doom's terrifying face inspire you to devotedly implement his policies until
you die" is the legally mandated way Latverians say goodbye.[38]
In an effort to discredit foreign linguistics, Latverian media claimed that
"goodbye" was an acronym that stood for "Gall, Outrage and Oppose Doom Because
You'reall Extremelybadpeople."[38]
Souvenirs from foreign nations are banned in Latveria.[38]
Latverians must denounce Reed Richards if commanded. Latverian law (or more
accurately Doom's rantings) state that saying anything remotely positive about Reed
Richards is an offense punishable by death.[51]
