Title of the lesson: The present progressive


(affirmative and negative form)

Lesson taught by: Mr Zakaria BAMBARA

Aim: To familiarize pupils with the use of the present progressive to express
ongoing actions for their daily communication.

Objectives: by the end of the lesson, the pupils will be able to:

 Identify the present progressive from other tenses


 Put five (5) sentences into present progressive
 Build five (5) meaningful sentences on their own using the present
progressive

Prerequisites: The pupils have already been taught the simple present tense, the
simple future tense adverbs of frequency.

Anticipated problem: the student may omit the auxiliary to be.

Anticipated solution: the teacher will clearly explain the importance of the
auxiliary to be in the present progressive.

Teaching materials: board, chalk, bucket of water, and duster


STAGES
STAGE 1: Presentation (12 min)

Step 1: Warm up (4 min)

- Greetings

- Song (twinkle)

- Date telling and writing

- Day’s lesson announcement

Step 2: Procedure (8min)

The teacher uses the inductive method to teach the lesson. He writes some
sentences on the board, underlines the verbs and marks the auxiliary “to be” and
the “ing” in red color, and together with the students they draw the rule.

1- I am not going to school now.

2- Listen! The teacher is speaking.

3- You are not eating at this moment.

4- Look! The baby is walking.

A- STRUCTURE

 Affirmative form: SUBJECT + am/is/are + VERB(ING)

Example: They are playing football.

 Negative form: SUBJECT + am/is/are + NOT + VERB(ING)

Example: The children are not sleeping.

B- EXPRESSIONS USED WITH THE PRESENT PROGRESSIVE

The present progressive is used with the following expressions: now, right now,
listen, look, at this moment, keep quiet.

C- USE

We use the present progressive to express ongoing actions or events.

STAGE 2: Practice (15 min)


Activity 1: oral and individual (5 min)

Step 1: Teacher- students’ interaction (2 min)

Instruction: listen carefully to me, and say if the following sentences are in the
present progressive or not.

1- I shall go home

2- We are learning English

3- They write the lesson

Step 2: students-students’ interaction. (3 min)

The teacher shares sheet of papers with sentences to some students and asks
them to do the same as he did.

Activity 2: written and individual

Instruction: Put the verbs in brackets into the present progressive tense.

1- Bakary (to play) handball in the living room.

2- I (not to study) my lesson now.

3- Listen! The president (to speak) on radio

4- Look! Toussaint (to dance) zouglou

5- Aminata (not to read) at this moment.

Step1: students complete the task (5 min)

Step 2: correction and evaluation (5 min)

STAGE 3: Production (20 min)

Activity: Written and pair work

Instruction: In pair, build 5 meaningful sentences using the present progressive


to talk about your classmates’ actions in class.

Step 1: The students complete the task (10 min)

Step 2: feedback and adjustment (10 min)

Note taking and administrative duties filling (7min)

Homework: At home, build sentences using the following adverbs: now, at this
moment, look, listen.
Closing: Thanking and leave-taking
