Welcome to the Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions - Grade 11/12
Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Contemporary Philippine Art Form
Appreciation.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by


educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

Art according to Paul Cezanne, is a harmony parallel with nature. It mirrors
nature, people, history, tradition and a certain country as a whole. It tells you a story
about beauty, love, pain and agony.

Contemporary Philippine Arts reflects on society. It teaches us a part of


cultural dialogue that concerns larger contextual frameworks such as identity,
family, community and nationality. It aims to depict and comment on the place we
live in. These depictions and commentary can inspire Filipinos to action and push to
become better versions of themselves.

You should as a students should broaden your understanding of yourself,


your community and our country. Learning Philippine Contemporary Art will help
you become a critical thinker as you consider the influences that led to the creation

of each art work from local artist such as, socio-political climate, the artist’s training
and cultural influence.

This module is consist of the specific things that you will learn followed by a
pre-test or a pre-assessment that will test your prior knowledge or basic knowledge.
A brief but comprehensive discussion of the different concepts is also included to
provide you with a clear understanding of what you will learn. Corresponding
activities with simple and logical steps are provided that you can easily follow and

What is New

Throwback
The traditional art of the Philippines developed as different factors influence
the art making in the country. The Philippine art has its unique characteristics based
on its period of development.
There are three traditions in the development of Philippine art; Ethnic
Tradition, Spanish Colonial and Contemporary Traditions. In the Ethnic Tradition,
the location and the experiences of the Filipinos were the major factors in art
production. In the Spanish period, religion and secularization were the dominant
themes of the art forms. In the Spanish period, religion and secularization were the

field of art wherein Filipinos started to explore different materials, methodologies,
and techniques in expressing themselves through non-conventional art. The
continuous progress of modernism led to the development of contemporary art.

What is It
Contemporary Philippine Art Forms

Contemporary Philippine Art has seven major forms: visual arts, literature,
music, theatre, dance, architecture, and film. Each art forms have significant
developments in the contemporary period.
1. Visual Arts
The Visual arts are forms such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture,
printmaking, design, craft, photography, video, filmmaking, and architecture.
During the American period, some artist who studied abroad introduced modern
visual art. It was then that subjects of artworks shifted from rural to urban themes.
After World War II, artist started creating proletarian art which depicts the life after
the war, social issues, and economic problems. Artists uses different styles in making
arts that became popular and trends in visual art. Different mediums were used to
create stylistic arts and drawings reflecting historical, social, economic, and political
themes.
Vicente Manasala, Romeo Tabuena and Cesar Legaspi were the three known
cubists and H.R. Ocampo, Constantiono Bernardo, Frederico Aguilar Alcuaz, Aturo
Luz and Jose Joya were the abstractionist. In sculpture, Napoleon Abueva became
famous for his modern works. He made use of different materials like woods, metal
and stones. Abueva used creative plastics, jade, brass and other materials to reflect
dynamism, freedom of expression together with other artists.
Social realist artist also used other popular art forms in conveying nationalistic
messages like comic, posters, and cartoons. The use of indigenous materials became
a trend in sculptures and installation art to promote environmental awareness.
Other styles includes:
- Expressionist Cubist Style
- Realism
- Surrealism
- Magic Realism
2. Literature
Many Filipino writers went into all forms of literature like news reporting,
poetry, stories, plays, essays and novels. Publication of young poets to campus
journals emerged during the contemporary period. Poetry during the early

modernism used colloquial language for national consciousness themes. Oppression

During the contemporary period, the works of American and British poets
influenced the English poems in the Philippines. Subject like love, identity,

Western poets and were used by poets like Edith Tiempo, Emmanuel Torres and
Dominador Ilio.
After the World War II, short stories depicting the lives of the working class
emerged. The short stories focused on self-consciousness and self-expression of the
writer and was produced with use of vernacular language.
Novels with sociopolitical themes also continued after the World War II. Writers
focused on the search of Identity. Essay and criticism, literacy criticism and informal
essay was also produced after World War II.
3. Music
The Philippine music during the 1960’s evolved into a combination of classical
and traditional or ethnic music. Contemporary music was widely introduced through
radio, film and other entertainment. Filipino pop music or Pinoy pop took place and
covered different music forms like jazz, dance hits, folksong revival, rock and roll,
rap etc. Music was characterized by Western-derived with English lyrics but with
pure Filipino spirit. OPM or the Original Pilipino Music and alternative music became
popular. Themes in the songs includes Filipino values, political and environmental
concerns, and other society themes.
Through establishment of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the
Filipino music and artists in all regions were given importance. They preserved
traditional music and innovate Philippine music. Indigenous music continuously
thrives and local composers continuously create vernacular songs.
4. Theatre
Philippine traditional theater was mainly Malay in character, which is rituals,
mimetic dances and mimetic customs. With the Spanish influence among which are
the komedya, the sinakulo, the playlets, the sarswela and the drama. Theater with
American influence encompasses bodabil or stage show but composed mainly of
songs, dances and skits. During the Japanese period bodabil included short
melodrama.
Western culture greatly influenced theater production. Theater artists imitate
popular American actors. But because of exposure to different theatrical styles and
dramatic theories, the Filipino artists were able to create stage plays that reflect
Philippine realities and set up. Sarswela, komedya and senakulo were also used for
theater experiment.
Styles in Philippine contemporary theater includes:
- Representational style – composed of psychological realism wich deals with
the problems of individuals and social realism which deals with problems of
individuals considering their society.
- Presentational style – highlights discussion of social ideas.
Other theater art forms includes:
- Dula-dula
- Dance drama
5. Dance
Bodabil is a stage show introduced by the American which showcase dances like
buck-and-wing, tap dancing, clog, and skirt dancing. European classical ballet also

entered the world of Philippine dance which made a huge popularity. Ballet was
followed by Modern dance. Modern dance is revolutionary in nature. Modern dance
uses a mixture of a wide range of dances, it focuses on dancers own interpretations
instead of structured steps.
Folk and social dances followed the rise of modern dance after Francisca Reyes-
Aquino researched on the Philippine folk dances. Folkloric dance groups were
established and they even developed Filipino adaptations of European and American
dances like the valse, rigaudon, polka, fandango, jota, etc. Other dance groups
revived the indigenous dance forms commonly performed during rituals and
ceremonies.
Dance styles includes:
- Folk dance
- Social Dance
- Ballet
- Modern Dance
- Ethnic or indigenous Dance
- Hip Hop
6. Architecture
Philippine architecture adopted the modern Western architectural style while
taking into consideration the physical and socio-cultural situations of the country.
Philippine architecture is simple, rational and functional. Some artists studied in
America and brought change to the Philippine architecture are Juan Arellano, Carlos
Barreto and Antonio Toledo. They introduced neoclassic style in building structures
and tends to revive classical architecture.
After the World War II, architecture in the country departed from the native
tradition. Real estate development started to take place, and two story houses were
introduced. Filipino houses were Americanized. There had been constructions of
expressways, convention centers, hospitals, hotels, malls, high-rise buildings,
amusement centers,etc. during the Marcos era. Eco cultural tourism, theme parks
and resorts were developed and given cultural heritage was preserved.
7. Film
Film became popular in 1912 when foreigners Edward Gross and Harry Brown
produced the film about life of Dr. Jose Rizal. Jose Nepomocenu was tagged as the
Father of Philippine Movies because he produced the first Filipino film. Philippine
film during the early times was influenced by Hollywood, however, the Filipino
producers cannot level with the quality of American movies due to outdated
technology and limited budget. The only edge of the Philippine movies was the local
film portrayed the lives of the Filipinos and used Tagalog as its language. The
different theater forms like the sarswela, sinakulo and komedya influenced the
succeeding film productions. Philippine literature was also a source of movie themes.
Japanese also brought their kind of film but Hollywood films were still more
appealing to the Filipinos.
Films produced after the war contained war stories and heroism. Four film
studios became prominent.
Film studios includes:
- LVN
- Sampaguita
- Lebran
- Premiere
Filipino movies, directors and producers started to be recognized locally and
internationally. Adult movies, slapstick comedies and action movies also became
popular.
Contemporary Philippine film subjects and themes includes:
- Martyr wife

- Horror/Suspense
