Major Traditions In Philippine Art

• The location and experiences of the Filipinos were the major factors in art
production.
• In terms of visual arts – POTTERY, WEAVING, and WOOD CARVING
were dominating, making use of the available materials surrounding
them.
1. Pottery:
Stands among one of the most ancient arts Manunggul Jar
excavated in Manunggul Cave in Palawan circa 8thcentury B.C. This
large burial jar has a cover showing 2 men rowing a boat, suggesting
the belief among early Filipinos in an afterlife across a mythical body of
water.

4
In later years, it is more associated with objects with daily use such
as the palayok(clay pot) for cooking, banga (clay jar)for storing drinking
water, asinan(salt container), tapayan(liquid container) for fermenting
basin or sugarcane wine or curing bagoong(small fish or shrimps
preserved in brine)
(Brine – a mixture of salty water used especially to preserve or add
flavor to the foods. In Ilocos, the making of burnay pottery continues
as a lively tradition.)
Materials – clay & sand mixed by carabao feet trudging round and
round for 6 hours.
Fidel Go1990 GAMABA Awardee, one of the notable potters in Vigan.

2. Weaving
Is a major part of the Philippine’s art and culture. Filipinos weave
different kinds of things such as slippers, hats, bags, and mat.
Banig is a handwoven mat used for sleeping and sitting. It is
made out of palm, pandanus, or seagrass leaves. The leaves are
usually dried, then dyed, and then cut into strips, which is now
ready to be woven. It is then woven into unique designs with a
clean pattern.
Bayong is another famous art weaving in the Philippines. It is an
alternative to using plastic bags. Locals usually used bayong to
carry their groceries as they head off to the market. Alike banigs,
it is made out of dried leaves. It is traditionally made out of pam
leaves, but in some cases, it can be made out of plastics. The use
of
bayong is more popular in the provinces than in the cities; however, it
has evolved into a more fashionable style.

3. Carving
It is the act of using tools to shape something from a material by
scraping away portions of that material. It can be applied to any material
that is solid enough to hold a form even when pieces have been removed
from it, and yet soft enough for portions to be scraped away with
available tools.
It is a means for making sculpture, is distinct from methods
using soft and malleable materials like clay, fruit, and melted glass,
which may be shaped into the desired forms while soft and then hardens
into that form.
PAETE, LAGUNA-It was proclaimed as the Carving Capital of the
Philippines on March 15, 2005, by Philippine President Arroyo.
Mariano Madriñan the town hero of Paete, was recognized by the late
King of Spain. He was awarded in Amsterdam in 1882 because of his
masterpiece the life-like Mater Doloros a Paete’s name was taken from
the word “paet” (or pait), which is the local term for chisel, the main
tool used in woodcarving.
