To the Facilitator of Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions

Welcome to this module CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE ARTS FROM THE


REGIONS – Grade 12 Modular Distance Learning (MDL) Self Learning Module on
the Socialization.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators
from public institution to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum Most Essential Learning
Competencies (MELCs) in the “New Normal” situation while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This module shall make the students take a deeper look about socialization,
values and values, and conformity to the society. It can help them analyses their
personal values and behavior towards society.

Philippine Art History


Pre – Colonial Arts (Ethnic Arts)

In Pre – Colonial Philippines, arts are ritual purposes or for everyday use.

Ethnic arts in Philippines are labors of love and patience. It intricate carvings
on wood, metal, stone, or glass are products of skillful hands and imaginative minds.

Islamic Art

Is characterized by
geometric designs and
patterns eliciting focus
from the believers.

Geometric patterns is one of the three non – figural themes of Islamic Art,
which also includes calligraphy and flowers. In Islam, the use of humans and animals
are not allowed. This comes from the view that the creation of living forms is unique
to the One God.

Spanish Era
Art become a handmaiden of religion, serving to
propagate the Catholic faith and thus support the
colonial order at the same time.

When the Spaniards arrived in the Philippines in


1521, the colonizers used art as a tool to propagate
the Catholic faith through beautiful images to explain the concepts behind
Catholicism, to tell the stories of Christ’s life and passion.

American Era
In the American regime, commercial and advertising
arts were integrated into the fine arts curriculum.
Moreover, Americans favored idyllic sceneries and
secular forms of arts.
American colonial strategy lay primarily in the
domain of ideology and culture through the
implementationof public educational system and educational program.

Japanese Era
Since Japanese advocated for the culture of East Asia,
preference was given to the Indigenous art and traditions of
the Philippines. This emphasized their propaganda of Asia
belonging to Asians.
Covers a wide range of art styles and media, including ancient pottery,
sculpture, ink painting and calligraphy on silk and paper, ukiyo – e paintings and
woodblock prints, ceramics, origami, and more recently manga which Japanese
cartoons and comics along with a myriad of other types.

Modern Era
Philippine Art began after World War 2 and the granting
of Independence. Writers and artist posed the question of
national identity as the main theme of various art forms.
Evolved into a wide variety of expressions and medium
turning the country into a situation of creative upheavals.

Contemporary Era
Was an offshoot of social realism brought about by Martial
Law. Arts became expression of people’s aspiration for a just,
free, and sovereign society.

civilization the Philippines up to present era. It reflects to the society with wide range of
diverse cultural influences and how it honored the culture and the arts of the country.
