If a valve seal has lost its grip or piston rings get worn, they can cause oil to
leak into the combustion chamber. This wayward fuel then mixes with other
engine elements and burns, causing white or blue smoke to escape from the
exhaust manifold.

What to Do If You See Smoke. If you notice smoke coming out of the vehicle,
do not keep driving. Pull over to the side of the road as soon as you can and
shut the engine off. If there's also low oil pressure, see if you can add some
fuel to the car and restart the engine.
Along with the smell of gas, the excess fuel that exits the tailpipe when there's
a dirty or clogged air filter can briefly ignite or cause black smoke to pour out
of the tailpipe when you start your car. This is not normal and should never
happen in a properly functioning vehicle

Can a PCV valve cause an engine to smoke?
Yes. A bad PCV valve can cause a car to blow white smoke. Several of the
Mopar engines, including the Hemi engines, are terrible about this when the
PCV valve fails. Copious amounts of blow-by go directly into the engine intake
and burn off in the cylinders, creating white smoke.
If the head gasket leaks, coolant might seep into the combustion changers
which are right next to the coolant channels. The liquid will be burned along
with gasoline. This creates a white or gray smoke that comes from the tailpipe
constantly. This is a clear sign that you have a head gasket problem

If there is a leak or crack in your exhaust manifold, the gases could be
escaping into the outside air before it has been transformed into a less toxic
gas. As a result, you might notice a strange smell coming from under your
hood. Leaks can also cause a lack of engine power.
