1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 General Background

Medicinal plants are widely used as folk medicine in non-industrialized

societies, mainly because they are readily available and cheaper than
modern medicines. Talking about Nepal, Nepal is rich in biodiversity .
There are various types of flora and fauna found in Nepal. We can find
diversity in medicinal herbs too. There are different useful herbs found in
different region of Nepal. As we are in the hilly region, we can find
medicinal herbs like tulsi, turmeric, neem, gurjo etc which are used by all
the people to cure the simple illness .

Medicinal plants, also called medicinal herbs, have been discovered and
used in traditional medicine practices since prehistoric times. Plants
synthesise hundreds of chemical compounds for various functions,
including defence and protection against insects, fungi, diseases, and
herbivorous mammals.Drug research sometimes makes use of
ethnobotany to search for pharmacologically active substances, and this
approach has yielded hundreds of useful compounds. These include the
common drugs aspirin, digoxin, quinine, and opium. The compounds
found in plants are diverse, with most in four biochemical classes:
alkaloids, glycosides, polyphenols, and terpenes. Few of these are
scientifically confirmed as medicines or used in conventional medicine.

Medicinal herbs have been used for centuries for their healing
properties. Some popular ones include chamomile for relaxation,
echinacea for immune support, and ginger for digestion. In a world
where modern medicine dominates, the significance of medicinal plants
often gets overlooked. However, throughout history and across cultures,
plants have been used as potent remedies for various ailments.
Traditional herbal medicine has been a cornerstone of healing practices.
Even today, in the age of pharmaceuticals, the therapeutic potential of
medicinal plants continues to be explored and recognized.
