WHAT IS GLASS?

Glass is an inorganic, non-crystalline, amorphous solid that is often completely transparent or

translucent. It is nearly inert, non-porous, hard yet brittle and resistant to most liquids, acids and gases.

At room temperature, glass is a nearly ideal elastic solid, a perfect electrical and thermal insulator, and
highly resistant to corrosion.

The isotropy of glass is one of the unique properties that makes it indispensable. Isotropy means that
the thermal expansion, electrical resistance, and tensile strength are identical in all directions through
the material.

Mohs hardness is a way to measure the scratch resistance of a material.

This scale was developed in 1812 by the German geologist and mineralogist Friedrich Mohs (1773-1839).

The idea behind the Mohs hardness scale is quite simple.

Harder materials scratch softer materials.

The Mohs hardness scale is based on a scale of 1 to 10, with diamond being the hardest material with
the highest value being 10. Materials are tested against each other, and if one scratches another, it will
indicate the material with the higher value.
