BIO201: Basic Anatomy and Physiology I

Course Description

A study of the anatomy, physiology and medical terminology of the skeletal, muscular, respiratory,
cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune, hematological, digestive, and reproductive systems. This course
covers human development, birth and genetics.

Students should expect to complete an average of two (2) hours of out of class work for every one (1)
hour of lecture and 1 (1) hour of out of class work for every one (1) hour of lab in each course.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, the student should know or be able to:

1. Identify medical terms labeling the word parts.


2. Define medical terms and abbreviations related to skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic,
immune, respiratory, hematologic, and reproductive systems.
3. Describe structural organization of the human body.
4. Identify the structures of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune, respiratory,
hematologic, and reproductive systems.
5. Describe body planes, directional terms, quadrants, and cavities.
6. List major organs in each body system, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune,
hematologic, respiratory, and reproductive and identify their anatomical location.
7. Describe the normal function of each body system skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic,
immune, respiratory, hematologic, and reproductive.

8. Discuss implications for disease and disability when homeostasis is not maintained, as it relates
to the body systems, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune, respiratory,
hematologic, and reproductive.
9. Compare body structure and function of the human body as it relates to the skeletal, muscular,
cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune, respiratory, hematologic, and reproductive system, across the
life span.
10. Explain the genetic concepts related to autosomal dominant, recessive, and X-linked inheritance.

Discussion Requirements

In courses where discussion boards are utilized, the following applies:
