Preventing heat stress


Step 1
Take Time Take Charge
Identify hazardous factors to the body which increase core temperature such as:
 Minimal air flow at job site
 Daily temperature and humidity level

Step 2
Implement controls
o Eliminate/minimise exposure by
 Rotating tasks
 Schedule heaviest work for cooler hours
 Gradually build up hours worked in heat
 Set up rest breaks and rest in a cool area
 Maintain hydration level
 Know the signs and symptoms of heat stress
 Contact the site health centre for advice

Questions to ask your team


 What can be undertaken to minimise heat/sun exposure when working across site?
Some expected answers could include:
1. Portable shade e.g. Shade tents, tarpaulins, umbrellas
2. Fans to increase air movement around job site/ work location
3. Access to drinking water in close proximity
4. Rotation of tasks to include shorter times in extreme temperatures

 What are some of the first signs of heat stress?


Expected answers may include:
 Clammy, moist skin, heavy sweating
 Thirsty
 Fatigue, weak, clumsy
 Confused, slow reaction time, agitated
 Nausea and vomiting
 Headache

 What are some further symptoms that may indicate heat stroke?
Expected answers may include:
 Difficulty breathing
 Cessation of sweating, hot, dry
 Weak, Confused
 Collapse, Convulsions and Coma

● What are the next steps to take if you suspect heat stress or stroke?
Expected answers may include:
1. Contact the ESO – dial 45
2. Move to cool air conditioned environment
3. Increase air movement by fanning
