AY3
"Oedipus Rex," written by Sophocles, is a tragic
play that unfolds in the city of Thebes. King
Oedipus seeks to rid his city of a devastating
plague and, in doing so, discovers a chilling
prophecy that foretells his destiny. The oracle
predicts that Oedipus will unknowingly kill his
father and marry his mother. Driven by a
determination to avert this ominous fate, Oedipus
embarks on a quest for the truth. Little does he
know that his biological parents, King Laius and
Queen Jocasta, had attempted to escape the
prophecy by abandoning him as a baby. Oedipus's
journey to uncover the truth, however, only leads
him closer to the inevitable tragedy. As the story
progresses, Oedipus learns about his true
parentage and unwittingly fulfills the prophecy.
He discovers that he had unknowingly killed his
father during a violent encounter on the road and
later married his own mother, Queen Jocasta. The
revelation shatters Oedipus, and in a fit of
despair and horror, he blinds himself. The play
delves into profound themes such as fate, free
will, and the consequences of attempting to defy
destiny. Oedipus's tragic journey serves as a
cautionary tale about the limits of human agency
and the inescapable nature of destiny, leaving
the audience with a poignant reflection on the
complexities of life and the power of unforeseen
consequences.
