Introduction
The Journey (一路有你 - Yī lù yǒu nǐ) is a 2014 Malaysian Chinese-language comedy-drama film
directed by Chiu Keng Guan and written by Ryon Lee. The cast includes Ben Andrew Pfeiffer, Lee
Sai Peng, and Joanne Yew Hong Im. The plot revolves around a father who eventually agrees to let
his daughter marry an English lad on the condition that he deliver their wedding invitations across
Malaysia using his route map. The Journey was also invited to screen at Udine, Italy's 16th Far East
Film Festival. At the 27th Malaysian Film Festival, The Journey received four awards from six
nominations, including Best Non-Malay Language Film. The film is also available on Astro First in
both original and dubbed-in-Malay versions.

Plot and Narrative Structure

"The Journey" tells the story of Uncle Chuan (Frankie Lee), a conservative father with strict rules. He
lives alone in Cameron Highlands, leading a lonely retirement life. His only hope is to reunite with his
only daughter Ah Bee (Joanne Yew), who returned from overseas after graduation, and live together
like a traditional family. In the end, after spending most of her growing up years in the UK, Ah Bee
returned after graduation, but she brought back her foreign boyfriend Benji (Ben Pfeiffer) and decided
to get married. Since they come from different countries, different cultures, and different languages,
communication has become one of their problems. Therefore, Uncle Chuan was very disgusted with
Benji and strongly opposed entrusting Ah Bee to him for her whole life. But Uncle Chuan's objections
could not change his daughter's decision, so he had to reluctantly agree, but the only condition he set
was that he hoped they could hold a traditional Chinese wedding. According to custom, the son-in-law
must follow his father-in-law to send out wedding invitations. At the same time, because of a promise
made when he was young, Uncle Chuan planned a road map to travel all over Malaysia. He and Benji
began to send wedding invitations to eleven primary school classmates all over Malaysia. Benji has
agreed with the task but insisted on traveling on his motorcycle. Without much choice, the journey of
a long-distance road travel of Uncle Chuan accompanied by Benji starts unwillingly (Pictures, n.d.-b).
The journey of invitation delivery was full of ups and downs. Meeting up with long-lost friends has
lightened up Uncle Chuan's day and brought back childhood memories of primary school. However,
not long after meeting Uncle Chuan, one of his classmates passed away. The sad situation has led
Uncle Chuan to feel that life is unpredictable and that everyone should live their lives without regrets,
this makes him to re-value his relationship with his daughter and son-in-law. The journey of invitation
delivery was exhausting, but despite the language barrier, Uncle Chuan and Benji have been taking
care of each other. They've both learned to compromise, and their differences decreasing by the day.
Uncle Chuan gradually realizes that Benji is the most ideal candidate to be his daughter's partner.
At last, Uncle Chuan finally gets to see his former primary school buddies. Uncle Chuan handed up
his daughter to Benji during the wedding ceremony, with the blessing of these important visitors.

4
Beyond that, in this movie, it's non-linear. The story appears in the middle section to review past
stories, which confirms that the film is non-linear.
For me, the narrative of this film that appeals to viewers is that the film was conceived and crafted
with honesty and sincerity, showing simplicity and comfort. The film is a vital part of a humanistic
story. The Journey represents the entire family - from children to grandparents. Furthermore, this film
does an excellent job of portraying the generational difference between a father-in-law and a son-in-
law from different countries, ethnicities, and cultures. Their perspectives and lives are also vastly
different...
However, they strive to be a tolerant and loving person who sympathizes and understands the culture
and respects each other's lifestyle and religion because they also love their daughter and wife and not
let their daughter or wife get into trouble because of the gap.
This movie creates more of a warm and comfortable feeling. How much "Journey" is loved by
viewers can be seen from the fact that it earned nearly RM18 million in cinemas. This is an
unprecedented feat and one that will be difficult to surpass.

Character Development
There are three main characters in the movie "The Journey", namely Uncle Chuan, Ah Bee and Benji.
Uncle Chuan is a very traditional and conservative person. An old man who has his own set of rules
and abides by Chinese traditions and disciplines. Uncle Chuan is a non-talkative person who is not
good at expressing his love. Therefore, Uncle Chuan's loneliness can be seen in this movie.
Next, is Ah Bee. Ah Bee is Uncle Chuan's only child. Ah Bee was sent abroad by Uncle Chuan to live
with his sister-in-law after her mother passed away. Uncle Chuan forcefully sent Ah Bee out of the
country without her permission. Even though Ah Bee cried and said no, Uncle Chuan still insisted on
sending her out, thinking that this was the best thing for her. Therefore, the relationship between Ah
Bee and Uncle Chuan became bad, but they both cared about each other.
Last, Benji is from England. Benji is a cheerful and enthusiastic person, but also ignorant and grumpy.
Because for an open-minded Westerner, sleeping with his fiancée is a reasonable thing. But Uncle
Chuan believes that a man and a woman cannot live together in the same room, so Benji feels irritated
and incomprehensible to Uncle Chuan's rigidity.
Looking at the character development in this movie, I think every character was well developed. From
a conservative and old-fashioned Uncle Chuan who is willing to change himself for Ah Bee, and
accepts and respects his daughter's choice, the character development is very good, showing
acceptance and compromise because of love. Furthermore, Ah Bee also goes back to her own town
specifically for Uncle Chuan to tell him that she is getting married and wants to please her father and
get his blessing. Benji also never wants to compromise and comply with Uncle Chuan's wishes. But
for the sake of my lover, he still tries to get along and accept it. From the character development of

5
these protagonists, it tells a good story about acceptance and respect for each other and wanting to be
blessed because of love.
Cinematic Techniques
a. Cinematography
This film's cinematography carries a tracking shot. A tracking shot is any shot in which the camera
follows the subject being filmed backward, forward, or moves beside it. The camera is frequently
mounted on a camera dolly that rides on tracks similar to a railway track; in this instance, the shot is
known as a dolly shot.
In addition, this movie uses a lot of high-angle shots. The camera looks down at the subject and scene
from a high angle. The film does a great job of using high-angle shots to convey the right moods,
scenes, and effects, making the film overall a great experience to watch.
Furthermore, the medium shot is the most basic cinematic technique employed in cinematography. A
medium shot was taken from a medium distance away from the subject. It is frequently utilized for
back-and-forth discussion inside a scene since it provides the audience with a clear picture of each
character in a film. This is known as the ‘sweet spot' shot since it shows both the intricacies of your
subject and the surrounding setting in which the drama is taking place. As a result, adopting a
medium shot can assist the spectator in depicting the body language of the individuals in the film and
how they interact with their surroundings.
The film also uses a long shot, also called a wide shot, which is often used as an establishing shot in
movies because it usually sets up the scene and the character's position within it. Use this
cinematography to render the surrounding area in large quantities. For example, some of the most
famous and iconic scenes in movies. This drama makes good use of this technology to present the
beautiful scenery of Malaysia.
Additionally, the film also contains over-the-shoulder shots. An over-the-shoulder shot shows the
shoulders and head in the foreground, out of focus. At the same time, there is another person, object,
or background in focus. This is one of the most important cinematographic techniques in narrative
filmmaking. Not only does it add much-needed depth to the shot, but it also helps make the dialogue
scenes look as natural as possible to the audience (Author, 2022).

b. Sound Design
Just like other movies, this movie also contains dialogue. Dialogue is an essential component of any
character. It brings the characters to life and gives each scenario depth. Dialogue describes the people,
what they desire to accomplish, and who they might become later in the novel. To understand
essential narrative aspects and what is happening in the film, the audience must be able to hear what
the performers are saying (WhisperRoom & WhisperRoom, 2023). Because of the characters' words
and actions, the audience becomes emotionally linked to them as the plot progresses.

6
Moreover, the sound design of the movie. Ambiance. Sometimes referred to as atmosphere, the
ambiance, also known as background noise, is the background noise that sets the setting and serves as
a basis for the soundtrack (Copple, 2023). It aids immersion by indicating where the action takes
place. For example, chirping songbirds depict a peaceful spring morning. Ambient noises inform and
depict without overpowering or distracting viewers.
Lastly, the importance of a film’s sound design part is music. Music may go unnoticed by viewers,
although it greatly enhances the experience. For many years, soundtracks and scores have played a
significant role in movies and television. Music generates atmosphere, elicits emotion, foreshadows
plot developments, and adds a new depth to the audible portion of a film (WhisperRoom &
WhisperRoom, 2023). The music used in this movie is a kind of lyrical and comfortable music that
makes people intoxicated.

c. Editing
So, in this movie, some of the parts show J-cut editing. The J-cut is named from the shape of the edit
in editing software, where the sound comes before the action. This signifies that the audio begins
before the visual clip. This can create suspense and effectively transition you from one scene to the
next (Filmsupply, 2023). In other words, is that the sound coming before the visual. Most notably, J-
cut can contribute to the creation of a startling or unpleasant feeling, expressing a character's mental
state.
This film contains some standard cuts of editing. A standard cut is an editing that jumps from one clip
to another. That scene is more of a practical scene that bounces back and forth from one another. The
'colder' editing style fits the way they are getting to know each other. The standard cut makes a
straightforward and unambiguous transition and keeps the viewer focused on the conversation or
activity (Filmsupply, 2023).

All the cinematic techniques used in "Journey" make the film more vivid and affecting.
First, the cinematographic setting supports the overall look and mood of the film's visual narrative.
Second, Sound Design makes the movie feel more real and creates a sense of space outside the screen,
which is important for the realism of the movie.
Finally, Editing allows viewers to feel emotionally connected and truly involved in the movie they are
watching by blending images and sounds.
Through these cinematic elements, it allows for a deeper connection between the audience and the
characters on screen.

7
Themes and Symbolism
In "The Journey", there are several types of central themes and messages conveyed in the film. The
first is the theme of family and tradition, which is an important theme of the film. The film tells the
story of a very conservative and traditional Chinese father who is very resistant to his daughter's
decision to marry her foreign boyfriend. Throughout the film, there are stories about how the
characters deal with cultural and communication issues and difficulties. Both sides are trying to
change and respect each other's culture and ideas.
Next comes the theme of love and acceptance. In this "The Journey" film it explores themes of love
and acceptance. The film shows that Benji did not intend to back down from the beginning, and in the
end, tried to communicate with Ah Bee's father and try to gain his recognition and acceptance. Uncle
Chuan also chose to accept his daughter's decision because he loved his daughter. Ah Bee also cares
about and loves her father, so no matter what unpleasant things she experienced as a child, she just
wants Uncle Chuan's blessing. From these actions, the characters illustrate the theme well.
Finally, there is the theme of cultural identity. The film delves into the concept of cultural identity,
specifically the differences between Chinese and Western cultures. This theme is well presented in the
movie, telling how the conservative Uncle Chuan gets along with his open-minded Western son-in-
law, Benji, and how they deal with each other's different cultural backgrounds, prejudices,
communication barriers and stereotypes.
In this movie, there are no recurring symbols or motifs to add depth to the story, as this movie would
lean more towards a heartwarming family movie. Simple but comfortable plot.

8
Social and Cultural Context
Chiu Keng Guan directed the Malaysian film "The Journey" in 2014. The story follows a traditional,
conservative father and his more modern, liberal son-in-law on a road trip together. The film
addresses social and cultural issues while also commenting on society and culture.
Furthermore, the film's cultural values dig into Malaysian Chinese traditional cultural values and
rituals. It emphasizes the significance of family, elder respect, and the function of food in Malaysian
culture. This depiction is a statement on the pervasiveness of cultural beliefs in changing times.
This film is primarily concerned with cultural issues. Malaysia is known for its diverse population,
which includes ethnic and religious groups from all over the world. "The Journey" expertly addresses
the problem of diversity by casting characters from many ethnic origins. The film emphasizes the idea
that, despite cultural differences, people can come together and connect with one another.
Beyond that, this film was released a year after the 2013 Malaysian election, which was marred by
controversy and claims of fraud. Because the film was released at this time, it was able to capture the
atmosphere of the country, which was experiencing more discussions about change, generational
disparities, and social ideals.
Overall, The Journey combines Malaysia's social and cultural background through these aspects.
While it does not give specific critique or answers, it does represent these characteristics of Malaysian
society, prompting viewers to reflect on their own ideals as well as the changing dynamics of the
culture.

Critical Assessment
For this movie, I personally think it is a good and heartwarming movie. This movie depicts the culture
and traditions of Malaysian Chinese very well, and makes people feel deeply connected to it after
watching it. Because in most families, dad is usually the strictest and taciturn person, and this concept
is well presented in this movie.
I think this movie combines the culture and traditions of the Malaysian Chinese, the love between
father and daughter, the lifelong childhood friendship that transcends time and culture, the liberal
views of the contemporary young generation, the unpredictability and fragility of life...these are...
Plots that seem unremarkable are often the most touching and evoke memories.
The script is emotionally poignant and relatable. Local pieces of this quality are very rare. This is a
huge achievement for the Malaysian film industry.
The cinematography and storyline of this movie are great. There are a lot of beautiful shots in this
movie that really impressed me. I loved "The Journey" for its excellent cinematic quality. For
example, in the movie, Benji takes Ah Bee back to her hometown on his motorcycle, and the scene
shows the beautiful tea plantations in the idyllic Cameron Highlands of Malaysia. There is also a

9
scene where the beach scenery in Sabah is naturally beautiful, when Ah Bee is painting leisurely
there.

Comparative Analysis
"The Journey" and "Ola Bola" are both Malaysian films directed by Chiu Keng Guan. However, they
differ in terms of storyline, style, and impact.
In Storytelling, "The Journey" focuses on the interpersonal aspects of a family and the generational
conflict between the father and son-in-law. It provides a more intimate and personal story, focusing on
the characters' journey and personal growth along the way. The plot is character-driven, and it delves
into family connections, morals, and cultural differences.
In comparison, "Ola Bola" is a sports drama about a multi-ethnic Malaysian football squad. It features
a larger ensemble cast and focuses on the team's struggle to overcome obstacles and bring together a
varied mix of players. "Ola Bola"'s storytelling is more centred on the teamwork and national pride
associated with athletics, making it a more overtly patriotic film.
Furthermore, is the style of these two films. "The Journey" uses a combination of comedy and drama
to communicate its message. It engages the audience by using humor, touching moments, and
stunning settings. The film's approach is more subtle and character-driven, with an emphasis on
personal growth and family dynamics.
"Ola Bola" is a sports film with a more dynamic and exciting style. It includes amazing sports
moments, action, and a terrific soundtrack. The film's aesthetic is more visually and emotionally
intense, with the goal of instilling a sense of national pride and nostalgia in Malaysians.
Finally, there is the impact of these two films. "The Journey" made an impression on Malaysian
audiences by addressing generational and cultural issues. It generated debate on family values and
cultural identity. While it had a smaller budget and scale than "Ola Bola," its impact was more
personal and emotional, capturing viewers' emotions.
While "Ola Bola" had a greater impact as a patriotic sports picture. Its goal was to bring Malaysians
together through their shared passion for sports and national pride. The film had a greater budget,
and more extensive marketing, and attracted both domestic and international notice. It helped to build
a sense of solidarity and pride among Malaysians while also highlighting the country's
multiculturalism.

Conclusion
In conclusion, The Journey is a Malaysian film that is embedded in its social and cultural context,
commenting on generational differences and cultural values while providing the audience with a
heartwarming story. It resonates with audiences by touching on personal and emotional themes,
making it an unforgettable contribution to Malaysian cinema. I highly recommend everyone to watch

10
this movie because it allows you to understand how your family loves you and how it is expressed
through words.
