Introduction
This book was written as a guide to the Georgian language for the Russian-speaking population. Later,
the Russian text was translated into English and currently it is a guide to the Georgian language for the English-
speaking population. The text was edited and translated into English by Rusudan Nakashidze.
The study of the Georgian language begins with the study of the Georgian alphabet. The first 5 lessons
are dedicated to writing, correct pronunciation, and reading of Georgian letters. The textbook presents a total of
70 ready-made lessons. Each lesson includes new words, text(s), dialogue(s), grammar material and exercises
corresponding to the grammar material. In this book are used the works of Georgian writers in a simplified
form (eg: Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani's fables, Yakob Gogebashvili's stories) or excerpts from their works (Nodar
Dumbadze's "Me Grandma, Iliko and ilarion", "Birthday"). The texts are selected in such a way that those who
want to learn the language get acquainted not only with Georgian writers and Georgian lliterature but also with
Georgian culture, art, geography and history of Georgia.
Special attention is paid to the study of Georgian grammar. Grammar material is explained in
English in a short, simple and understandable way. This is the only textbook where Georgian grammar is
explained in English. Each grammar material is accompanied by corresponding exercises. The
grammatical material contains the meaning, formation and use of all seven declinations of nouns (as well
as adjectives, numerals and pronouns), all categories of Georgian verbs (person, number, tense, series and
screeves, polypersonality, transitivity, voice, aspect, mood, version, contact), formation of participle and
adverb, subject and predicate agreement.
At the end of the book, there is a dictionary with more than 1500 words.
The textbook is designed for anyone who wants to learn the Georgian language.
