Common Core/PA Standard(s)

S.K-2.D.2.1.2 Identify how weather conditions affect daily life.

S.K-2.D.2.1.1 Identify weather variables (i.e., temperature, wind speed, wind direction, and
precipitation).

Learning Targets/Objectives
● After reviewing the weather unit, 2nd grade students will be able to demonstrate their
knowledge of weather by playing a kahoot review game.
● Students will use their knowledge of weather and add their favorite fact about weather
they learned to their weather journal.
Formative Assessment Approaches Evidence observation or method of collection
1. Weather Kahoot 1. Correct answer responses to kahoot
2. Write in their weather journal what questions
they enjoyed learning about 2. Collect weather journals to understand
students knowledge and what they
enjoyed learning about
Assessment Scale for any of the assessments above if needed
Collect Weather Journal
> 10 rubric score---- Proficient
< 10 rubric score------- below basic

Summative if applicable: Quiz on different thermometers and their temperatures

Subject Matter/Content to be taught in the lesson
- weather review

Prerequisites
- An understanding of the different types of weather
- An understanding of the different types of clouds
- A basic understanding of the weather instruments
- A basic understanding of natural disaster
- A basic understanding of the water cycle
- An understanding of different weather vocabulary and how to become a good
meteorologist

New Key Vocabulary

- Meteorologist- A physical scientist who observes, studies, or forecasts the weather

- Thermometer: an instrument for measuring and indicating temperature, typically one
consisting of a narrow, hermetically sealed glass tube marked with graduations and
having at one end a bulb containing mercury or alcohol that expands and contracts in
the tube with heating and cooling.
- Fog: a cloudlike mass or layer of minute water droplets or ice crystals near the surface
of the earth, appreciably reducing visibility
- Rain gauge: measures the amount of rain that falls.
- Anemometer: an instrument for measuring the speed of the wind, or of any current of
gas.
- Condensation: is the change of the state of matter from the gas phase into the liquid
phase, and is the reverse of vaporization. The word most often refers to the water cycle.
- Precipitation: When the clouds meet cool air over land, precipitation ( rain, sleet, or
snow) is triggered, and water returns to the land (or sea).
- Evaporation: The change of a liquid to a gas; the sun heats energy up and turns water
into vapor(gas)
- Transpiration: Evaporation of water from the leaves of a plant gives of purified water
to be evaporated
- Runoff: the draining away of water (or substances carried in it) from the surface of an
area of land, a building or structure, etc.
- Tornado: Make an emergency plan; include family communication and evacuation
plans
- Hurricane:A hurricane is a type of storm called a tropical cyclone, which forms over
tropical or subtropical waters.
- Earthquake: An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip
past one another. The surface where they slip is called the fault or fault plane.
- Tsunami: Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under
the sea.
- Wildfire: A large, destructive fire that spreads quickly over woodland or brush.
- Volcanic Eruption: A volcanic eruption is when gas and/or lava are released from a
volcano—sometimes explosively.
-
- Cirrus cloud:Cirrus clouds are short, detached, hair-like clouds found at high altitudes.
These delicate clouds are wispy, with a silky sheen, or look like tufts of hair.
- Cumulus: Cumulus clouds are clouds that have flat bases and are often described as
puffy, cotton-like, or fluffy in appearance.
- Stratus: Stratus clouds are low-level layers with a fairly uniform gray or white color.
- Cumulonimbus: Cumulonimbus clouds are storm clouds and normally associate with
lightning and thunder
Content/Facts
- Students will complete a kahoot review based on weather and everything we learned in
the unit
- students will complete an exit ticket on their favorite thing they learned in the unit in
their weather journal
- As a class we will discuss what the students learned throughout the unit and what their
favorites were

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies
- “Today we are going to end our unit on weather.”
- “We will start with a kahoot review on all the topics we covered in weather.”
- “Everyone quietly get out your Ipads and enter the game code for kahoot.”
- Once all students are logged into kahoot we will start
Development/Teaching Approaches
- Teacher will read kahoot questions to the students
- Once the kahoot is complete teacher will give out Eagle Bucks to those who
placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd and the runner ups
- Students will then head back to their seats and get their weather journals out
- Once all students have their weather journals out, the teacher will ask the
students to write what they enjoyed learning about during the unit of weather.
- Teacher will then collect all weather journals to make sure students were
following along with recording all the weather

Closure/Summarizing Strategies
- “Now remember how we took the pretest for the weather unit? Well today we are
going to take the post test. It is the exact same test so the questions should look
familiar.
- “I will read the questions and the answers for you just fill in the answer you think best
fits.”
- “Let's get started, make sure your name is at the top of the paper.”
- Once students are finished with the test the teacher will collect
- “Okay that is it for weather, there is so much to learn about weather but I hope you
enjoyed learning about what we did in class.”

Accommodations/Differentiation

- Follow all IEPs and 504 plans

- Chunking material
- Preferential seating
- Repetition of directions
- Allow extra time if needed
- Cross some of the options off of the answers for the test

Materials and Resources:

- Weather journal
- Student Ipads
- Kahoot
- post test
