INTRODUCTION
Bacteria infection control is all about preventing the
spread of infection caused by bacteria. It focuses on the
type of bacteria that can cause infection, their
transmission routes, and implementing effective
measures to control and prevent their spread. In the field
of cosmetology, bacteriology effective control involves
practices like proper hand hygiene, disinfections of tools
and surfaces using clean and sterile materials, and
following strict protocols to prevent bacterial infection. By
implementing these measures, cosmetologists can create
a safe and hygienic environment for their clients.

WHAT IS
BACTERIOLOGY?

Bacteriology is the study of bacteria. This

involves the identification, classification,
and characterization of bacterial species.

WHAT IS
BACTERIA?

A large number of unicellular micorganisms

Which have cell walls but lack organelles, and an organized
nucleus, including some that can cause disease.

MOVEMENT
OF BACTERIA

The movement of bacteria is called motility. This jiggly

movement seen in some non motile bacteria that are
incapable of self-propelled movement is due to bombardment
of bacteria in water molecules. There are several types of
movements of bacteria but the most common occurs by the
appendage flagella.
A bacterium can contain a single flagellum, several flagella
located at one or both poles of the cell,or many flagella
dispersed all over the bacterial surface. Flagella can rotate in a
clockwise or counterclockwise direction, even multiple flagella
can unite into a flagellar bundle that functions as a
propeller. This occurs when the bacterium is moving towards a
chemical attachment or away from the repellent in the

behavior known as chemotaxis. If the flagella turns in the

opposite direction, the coordinated motion of the flagella
stops, and a bacterium will “tumble”, or move in a undirected
or random way.

BACTERIA GROWTH
AND REPRODUCTION

Bacteria growth and reproduction within cosmetology is

referred to as the proliferation and multiplication of bacteria
in the field of cosmetics and beauty treatment. Bacteria tends
to thrive in moist and warm environments, making beauty
products and tools susceptible to contamination if proper
hygiene practices are not followed.

In cosmetology, bacteria growth and reproduction can occur in

various settings, such as makeup brushes, sponges, beauty

blenders, razors, nails, tools and even the cosmetic products

themselves. Bacteria can be introduced through human
contacts, airborne particles or inadequate cleaning and
sterilization processes.
If bacteria is present and allowed to multiply, they may pose
potential health risk to clients and professionals working in the
cosmetology field.Bacterial infection, skin irritation, and
allergic reaction can result from using contaminated tools or
products.

To prevent bacteria growth reproduction, it is important to

allow strict sanitation protocols. This includes regularly
cleaning and disinfecting tools, implementing proper hand
hygiene practices, using disposable or sterilized applicators,
checking products' expired dates, and strong cosmetics in a
clean and controlled environment.

Overall understanding bacteria growth and reproduction in

cosmetology is crucial for maintaining a safe and healthy
environment in beauty salons, spas and other cosmetics
establishments.

WHAT IS
DECONTAMINATION?

Decontamination in cosmetology refers to the process of

eliminating any harmful or infectious agents from tools,
equipment, and surfaces to maintain a safe environment. It's
an important practice to prevent the spread of bacteria,
viruses, and other contaminants in salons or beauty
establishments. Proper decontamination techniques include
cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing tools and surfaces to
ensure health and safety of both clients and professionals.

STERILIZATION:

This is a process that goes beyond decontamination. It

involves completely eliminating all microorganisms, including
bacteria, viruses, and fungi from tools, equipment, and
surfaces. Sterilization techniques often used in high heat,
pressure, or chemical agents to achieve this level of
cleanliness. It's an important step in maintaining a safe and
hygienic environment in cosmetology practices, especially for
tools that come in contact with the skin or body.

Disinfectant:
In cosmetology, a disinfectant is a chemical agent that is
used to kill or inactivate microorganisms on surfaces, tools,
and equipment. It helps to reduce the risk of infection and
maintain a clean and safe environment for both clients and
professionals. Disinfectants are specifically formulated to

target a wide range of pathogens including bacteria,

viruses and fungi. They are an essential part of the
decontamination process in cosmetology practices. It's
important to use disinfectants that are approved for use in
a salon industry and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
for proper application and contact time.

Sanitation:
In cosmetology, sanitation refers to the practices and
procedures that are implemented to maintain cleanliness and
prevent the spread of germs, bacteria, and other
contaminants. It involves cleaning, disinfecting, and
sterilization of tools, equipment, and surfaces to ensure a safe
and hygienic environment for both clients and professionals.
Sanitation is crucial in preventing infections and promoting the
well being of everyone in the cosmetology setting. It's
important to follow proper sanitation protocols and guidelines
to uphold high standards of cleanliness and safety.

METHODS OF
STERILIZATION

In cosmetology, there are various methods of sterilization

used to ensure the highest level of cleanliness and safety.
Some common methods include:

AUTOCLAVING: This method uses steam under high pressure

and temperature to kill microorganisms on tools and
equipment. It is one of the most effective forms of sterilization.

DRY HEAT STERILIZATION: This involves using hot air or a dry

oven to achieve sterilization. It is suitable for items that can
withstand high temperature

CHEMICAL STERILIZATION: Certain chemicals, such as ethylene

oxide gas, are used to sterilize tools and equipment. This
method is commonly used for items that are sensitive to heat.

ULTRAVIOLET (UV) STERILIZATION: UV light is used to kill or

inactivate microorganisms on surfaces. It is often used for
disinfecting surfaces and air in the salon environment.

TYPES OF
DISINFECTANTS

In cosmetology, there are different types of disinfectants

methods used to maintain a clean and safe environment.
Some common types of disinfectants include:

HIGH-LEVEL DISINFECTION: The method involves using

chemical agents or solutions that are capable of killing a wide
range of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi.
High level disinfection is often used for tools and equipment
that come in contact with mucous membrane or broken skin.

INTERMEDIATE-LEVEL DISINFECTION: This method targets a

broader spectrum of microorganisms but may not be as
effective against certain resistant bacteria or viruses. It is
commonly used for non-critical surfaces and tools that come
in contact with the skin.

LOW-LEVEL DISINFECTION: This method is used to eliminate

most common bacteria and smell viruses. It is typically used
for general cleaning and disinfection of non-critical surfaces in
the salon environment.

It's important to follow manufacturer's instructions for proper

use and contact time when using disinfectants. Choosing the
appreciation level of disinfection depends on the type of
surfaces or tool being disinfected and the potential risk of
contamination. Regular through disinfection practices are
essential to maintain a hygienic and safe environment.

TYPES OF
SANITATIONS
In cosmetology, there are various types of sanitation practices
that are important for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene.
Some common sanitations include:

CLEANING: This removes visible dirt, derbis, and product

residue from surfaces, tools, and equipment using appropriate
cleaning agents.

DISINFECTION: This is the process of killing or inactivating

most disease- causing microorganisms on surfaces, tools, and
equipment. It usually involves using chemical disinfectants
that are registered and approved for use in salons.

STERILIZATION: This is the highest level of sanitation, and it

involves eliminating all forms of microbial life, including
bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Sterilization methods, such as
autoclaving or dry heat sterilization, are used for equipment
that come into contact with the skin or mucous membranes.

PERSONAL HYGIENE: Maintaining personal hygiene, such as

washing hands regularly, wearing clean uniforms or clothing,
and using disposable gloves, is crucial for preventing the
spread of germs and maintaining a sanitary environment.

It's important to follow proper sanitation protocols and

guidelines to ensure safety and well-being of both clients and

professionals in the cosmetology setting.Regular sanitation

practices help prevent the spread of infection and promote a
clean and healthy environment.
