A.C Tachometer to measure speed of motor
Practical significance
In AC tachometer , the armature is provided with an AC winding either single phase or three
phase winding .When the rotor is stationary and primary winding is excited by an AC input
voltage, the induced voltage in secondary is zero due to relative position of two winding being
placed at 90° to each other .As rotor rotates, a voltage is induced in the secondary winding whose
magnitude is proportional to the rotor speed.

Theory
The AC tachometer is used to measure the speed only in one direction. In AC tachometer the
armature is provided with an AC winding, either single phase or three phase windings. When the
rotor is stationary and primary winding excited by an AC input voltage, the induced voltage in
secondary is zero. Due to relative position of two winding being placed at 900 to each other. As
the rotor rotates, a voltage is induced in the secondary winding whose magnitude is proportional
to the rotor speed.
The EMF induced in quadrature coil is directly proportional to the rotor speed and is in phase
with applied voltage to the reference coil.
V t = Ktɸ (t)
Where,
Kt = tachometer constant.
Application:
•It is used to measure rotational speed.
•It can measure the flow of liquid with the help of an attached wheel with an inclined angle.
Advantages:
•The amplitude and frequency of voltage induced in stator winding are proportional to speed.
•The unknown speed can be measured in two ways. One is by measuring the amplitude and the
other is by measuring the frequency of the induced voltage.
•The rectified output voltage can be measured by means of a moving coil voltmeter that contains
a uniform scale.
Disadvantages:
•Under low-speed conditions, the resulting output voltage frequency is low.
•Under high-speed conditions impedance of coils increases along with frequency. So in order to
have good linearity, the input impedance of the display device should be high compared to the
impedance of coils.
