1. Introduction to Khalti

1.1 Introduction

What is Digital wallet?

Digital wallet also known as e-wallet is a software of application which helps manage the users
their financial information like credit card information,bank account information, and other
payment method in digital format.Digital wallets makes it easier for user to perform digital
transactions, making it more convenient, secure and less time consuming than traditional form of
payment mechanism. A digital wallet offers services such as making payment, stroing loyalty
cards and points,digital ticketing, fund transfer,P2P transfer etc.

Khalti is an e-wallet which allows instant,secure and fast online payment, khalti is a owned by
Sparrow Pay Pvt. Ltd under the parent company Janaki Technology. Khalti is a mobile
wallet,payment gateway which was launched in January 2017. The major services offered by
khalti are payment for basic utilities, hotel bookings, movie ticketing, flight ticketing, Payment
of insurance, financial services and government services. Khalti also offers payment to hundreds
of merchants and it is just not limited to mobile app users but also is has got more than 8000 POS
and agent network. As stated in khalti website their goal is to simplify lives of people by brining
financial inclusivity to every individual in Nepal and take the payment industry from offline to
online through best practices.

1.2 Objectives of the Study


The main objectives of the study is to find about comparative advantage of Khalti in terms of
digital wallet segment in Nepal. The possibility of replacing cash with digital wallet and the
popularity of Khalti among e-wallet users of Nepal. We would also look at the service provided
by Khalti and it’s features along with it’s strengths and weakness in digital wallet segment .

1.3 Scope and Limitations
Scope:

 As per studies, the mobile phone penetration in Nepal has reached to 73.2% and
There were 15.85 million internet users in Nepal at the start of 2023, when internet
penetration stood at 51.6 percent.
 The e-commerce in Nepal is expected to grow by 6.2% every year and with growing
e-commerce activities the digital payment services would rise substantially.

Limitations:

 People are reluctant to use digital wallets for fear of unknown, less techonology friendly.
 Digital wallets are vulnerable to frauds and scams.
 The use of payment fees that adds further cost for the micro payments.
 The unavailability of offline version or sms mode which makes it dependent on internet
service.

1.4 Methodology of Study


For this report we used information from internet, our course book e-commerce, magazine,
articles and find other relevant secondary data and use all the appropriate information.

2. Review of Khalti

2.1 Introduction
Electronic payment system are increasing everyday due to huge market penetration of internet
and mobile phone as well as online shopping. Khalti is one of the popular electronic payment
system that was introduced in Nepal in 2017. Khalti is a digital wallet that is being used for

instant, secure and hassle-free online payment in Nepal. According the report the market share of
Khalti was 13% in 2020 and since then it has been rising.

2.2 Features of Khalti

 Payment method Storage – Khalti allows the users to securely store various payment
method such as bank account information, previous transfer history, saved bank accounts.
 Mobile payment- Khalti allows the users to make payment from their phone or via their
website eliminating the need to carry cash or use traditional means of payment.
 QR payments- Khalti has provided the feature of QR based payment and it supports
multiple merchants like fonepay, unionpay, smartqr and nepalpay.
 Integration with Financial Services- Khalti is integrated with the bank and we can
directly pull the fund from our banks to the khalti account.
 Cashback and offers- Khalti offers multiple cashback and offers to the users such as
khalti quiz, cashback, challenges arena etc.

2.3 Service Provided by Khalti


Khalti provides a wide range of services to it’s customers. Some of the attractive and useful
services provided by Khalti are discussed below.

 Mobile Top-up
Khalti provides easy option for mobile phones users to top-up their device using
khalti services. The top-up facility is provided to NTC, Ncell, Smart cell. For mobile
top-up we have to insert the phone number on which we want to top-up and then enter
the amount of top-up.

 Landline Payment
Users can pay their landline bills from their khalti account. To pay the landline bill
we have to click the landline option in the khalti app or khalti website and then enter
the landline number and amount and then pay.

 Basic Utilities
Users can pay their basic utilities from khalti. Users can pay for electricity, water and
local community electricity through khalti. Khalti has saved the hassle for people to
travel to the counter and then stand in line and pay the bills. It’s more convenient.
 Capital Market
With Khalti the payment related to capital market can be done easily. It includes the
payments such as demat account renewal,meroshare renewal, broker transaction
settlement. The charge for all these payment is minimal.
 Flight Ticket
Khalti allows the users to book the ticket of domestic as well as international flight
with just few clicks. We need to click on flight option and then select the date and
select the number of passengers that are flying and then we can book the flight
through Khalti. All the major airlines are associated with Khalti such as Buddha Air,
Yeti Air, Simrik Air etc
 Insurance Premium
Using Khalti application users can now pay for their insurance premium. Khalti is
associated with all the insurance company of Nepal such as LIC Nepal, NlIC, Asian
Life Insurance etc. Users can now pay their premium as well as settle their loan
through Khalti.
 Government Service
We all know the hassle of paying fees at government office, the hectic queue that we
need to tolerate but Khalti had decided to eliminate it by providing payment options
for government service like passport, bluebook renew, Traffic police fine, health
insurance board etc

3.SWOT Analysis
Every organization operating in an environment has got it’s own strength,weaknesses,
in organization level and from the environment opportunities and threat arises. The
holistic study of all these aspects of an organization is called SWOT analysis.

3.1 Strengths

 Khalti has done a rapid expansion as compared to it’scompetitiors. Within few years
it had grown exponentially.
 Khalti has got collaboration and association with large number of entities like
airlines, government offices, utility company like NEA and other water provider.
 The marketing done by Khalti has been doing a great to attract huge number of
customers.
 The application of Khalti is stable and it doesn’t crash that often.
 The security features that is offered by Khalti is secure and it has been helping to
reduce scams.
 The quizs, games and contest organized by Khalti has been successful in setting them
apart.
 The customer support of Khalti is good and most of the problems of customers are
solved immediately.

3.2 Weakness

 Khalti faces a lot of competition from maket giants like esewa.


 Khalti has limited offline reach so it targets only the online market which is small
but growing.
 It is only focused on Nepal and we cannot do international transaction through
Khalti

3.3 Opportunities

 Khalti can collab with banks and other financial institutions and can facilitate cardless
withdrawal from ATM machines of these organization.

 Khalti can facilitate international payments such as payment for Netflix and other
services.
 Khalti can make offline version and can do offline transaction where internet isn’t
available.
 It can target increasing number of people who are just getting internet connection and a
mobile phone.

3.4 Threats

 Threat of hacking and scam that is prevalent in digital wallet sector of Nepal.
 Banking application have started to provide all the facilities provided by e-wallets so they
pose threat to Khalti.
 E-sewa rising dominance in market is a threat.
 Internet is required to do transaction and now other companies has started to do offline
transaction too.
 High transaction cost associated.

4 Conclusion and Suggestion
With the rising internet and mobile phone penetration e-wallet use has been increasing in
Nepal.It has so much more potential to grow and it can offer many more services to general
population. Despite multiple challenges from government policy, lack of infrastructure and
recession in the economy e-wallet are doing a great job. In rising economy like Nepal where
more and more people are using mobile phone the prospectus of e-wallet business is very good.
In near future all the e-wallet company can do very good and they can make our economy a
digital and cashless economy which leads to convenience, less scams and frauds and which is
based on accountability.

Khalti has involved as a dynamic and interactive platform for electronic payment. It has changed
the way of payment, gradually replacing the traditional way of payment. It is expected that the
way Khalti is emerging will definitely serve the people ensuring more security, reliability and
efficiency in the coming days.Khalti is a safer, easier method to pay online. With more
merchants increasing each day, it provides power to the customers.
