1 General information and safety instructions

1.1 General information

SOMAS actuators are designed to be the best in control and on/off applications. The type A
pneumatic actuators are specifically made to fit the SOMAS range of valves. They can also be used
with most 90° rotary valves. The A-DA actuator double-acting and the A-SC and A-SO actuators are
single-acting spring return for fail safe operation.

SOMAS offer a rebuilding kit to enable locking of the actuator in closed position for additional safety
during operation and repair.

The locking positions are easy to adjust.

When locking the actuator, make sure that the valve is in the closed position.

Warning!
Before carrying out maintenance or repair work to the actuator always disconnect the
compressed air supply to the actuator. Deaerate so that the air is leaving the actuator.
Single action actuators may move to “open” or “closed” position without being connected to the
air system.

Danger!
Risk of injury!
Always release the spring tension before removing the end cover of the actuator.

Warning!
When locking the actuator, make sure that the valve is in the closed position.

2.1 Dismounting standard end cover, Actuator A11-A42

1 Marking position in closed position

Fig.2-1 Before dismounting

Before dismounting, make sure that the actuator is in the closed position.
Then make a mark from the rotating part over to the fixed cover (➔ Fig2-1/1). This
is to be able to get back to the closed position when adjusting the locking device.

Procedure

i
Note
Dismounting/Mounting is always on the right side as shown in fig. (➔ Fig.2-2).
Always disconnect the compressed air from the actuator before starting the dismounting work.

Fig.2-2 Dismounting of the standard end cover

• Disconnect the compressed air from the actuator.

• Then deaerate so that all air is leaving the actuator.

• Dismount the standard end cover according to drawing above (➔ Fig.2-2).

Mounting and adjusting “center pin”

• Mount the “center pin” (➔Fig1-1/6) in the middle of the piston (➔Fig2-3/1).

• Adjust the measurement from the piston to the hole in the “center pin” according to value
X (mm) in the table ➔Tab 2-3. Tighten the locking nut (➔Fig2-3/2).

• Tightening torque according to table (➔Tab 1-3)

2.3 Mounting end cover with lock function, Actuator A11-A42

• Make sure that the valve is in closed position by checking the earlier made marking (➔Fig2-1/1).

• Mount the end cover with locking unit according to drawing (➔Fig2-4).

Fig.2-4 Mounting end cover with lock function

• Verify the length adjustment of the centre pin by checking that the locking pin can go through
the hole of the locking unit.

i
Note
When the locking pin is not used to lock the actuator, it can be screwed into a “stand-by”
position (➔Fig. 2-5). The dirt protection (➔Fig1-1/7) is then turned to protect the hole of the
locking device from dirt.

• Tighten the four screws of the cover. Tightening torque according to table (➔Tab 1-3).

• Adjust the actuators closed position by the adjusting screw (➔Fig.1-1/2).

• Lock closed position adjustment screw with the lock nut (➔Fig.1-1/3).

• Adjust the locking ring (➔Fig.1-1/4) to make sure that the locking pin can through the locking
unit. Tighten the screw (➔Fig.1-1/5) carefully.

1 Marking position in closed position 2 Locking pin 3 Locking pin

i
Note
Initially use the closed position marking (➔Fig.2-1/1). Later when the actuator is installed on a
valve the closed position is adjusted in accordance with the valves needs.

2.4 How to use the locking device, Actuator A11-A42

• When locking, first make sure that the valve is in the closed position.

• Then make sure that the locking pin is able to move freely through the locking device.

• There is a possibility to use a padlock to secure the locking pin from being removed from the
locking device.

• Make sure the locking pin is stored at the actuator when the locking function is not used. The
storage area for the locking pin is shown at the illustration below (➔ Fig.3-0).

• When the locking device is not used the hole should be covered by the
dirt protection (➔ Fig.1-1/7).
