1 Scope
This standard is part of the STD4172-series “Scania Logistic Manual” and contains demands
on packaging. It also covers packaging instructions and how to order packaging material.
Following IATF16949 terminology the Suppliers delivering to OEM (customer) are called
Organisations and tier 2- are defined as Suppliers.

2 Terms and definitions

The glossary contains words and abbreviations that are used within this document. A more
extensive list can be found in the main STD4172 document.

3 Packaging
This section lists the packaging agreements Scania has with Organisations. It also lists some
important information. More information is available on the SSP and is required reading for new
Organisations once they are nominated.

3.1 Packaging guidelines and instruction

Scania furnishes its own returnable packaging materials to be able to efficiently handle the large
quantity of goods that arrives at Scania.
Scania has a packaging framework to standardise the use of returnable packaging and it is
described in this document and the main document STD4172.
The use of Scania returnable packaging materials occurs throughout the entire supply chain, from
the Organisation all the way to the assembly line. It is therefore essential that everyone involved
shall follow the relevant system and methods.

3.1.1 Automotive Parts (serial deliveries)

The Organisation shall pack the goods according to the Scania packaging guidelines and the
packaging instructions. The Packaging section on SSP describes Scania packaging materials and
how a unit should be packed. The packaging instruction provides specific information about how
each part shall be packed on delivery.
The packaging instruction is issued by the local packaging engineer from Scania and it can be
changed at any time by Scania. In that case, a new packaging instruction or notification is issued to
the Organisation through e-mail. The Organisation shall reply with an implementation date of the
instruction within two weeks.
• For Organisations outside Latin America this can be done directly in the system PackIT.
• For Latin America this is done through replying by e-mail.
Packaging instructions for European Organisations can be found in PackIT, accessible on the SSP.
Packaging instructions for Latin American Organisations can be found at ePackaging, accessible on
the SSP.
The Organisation shall be able to handle different packaging for the same part number for
different production units (PRUs).
The Organisation can only deviate from the packaging manual and the packaging instruction when:
special circumstances (e.g. lack of right type packaging) occurs and
after approval from Scania Material Planner
The escalation process for this can be found on SSP under Shortages.

3.1.2 Scania parts logistics

For spare parts the Organisation shall be able to ship less than a full packaging unit when required.
All other information from 3.1.1 Automotive Parts section is valid for parts logistics.

3.1.3 Prototype or test parts

Packaging guidelines for prototypes can be found on SSP under Packing of prototype parts.

3.2 One-way packaging materials

For one-way packaging materials, there are three main groups.
Inner packaging, such as plastic bags, cardboard or bubble plastic to protect the part that is
always sourced and paid for by the Organisation.
Scania branded packaging for spare parts is ordered from Scania Spare parts and supplied by
Scania.
Outer one-way packaging that is sourced and paid for by the Organisation.
All wood-based products (i.e. wood, plywood, cardboard, paper) shall come from FSC or PEFC
certified Organisations.

3.2.1 Outer one-way packaging

This requirement is only valid for Organisations outside the requirements for usage of Scania
packaging in STD4172. If you are within those requirements you are expected to use Scania
returnable outer packaging.
The packaging for serial production parts shall be approved by a packaging engineer at Scania,
before the first delivery. All solutions are required to be stackable with itself and normal Euro-pallets.

The Organisation guarantees the quality of the part by choosing the right packaging solution. Any
extra packaging needed or things such as extra weight should be analysed and included in the
solution. Table 2 applies to both the pallet in the bottom and the solution on top to pack parts into.
Measurements of the pallet bottom should be close to Euro- or half Euro-pallet measurements. The
reason for these specific demands is high bay storages at the Scania plants.

Table 2 – Pallet measurements

Type Width Length Height BCT value (N)
Euro 800 (+/-5) mm 1200 (+/-5) mm <1000mm >10 000
Half Euro 600 (+/-5) mm 800 (+/-5) mm <1000mm >5 000

For the pallet bottom, Figure 1 describes the measurements needed for handling by forklifts and
automatic storages.

Min 100mm
15mm
250mm

Figure 1 – Measurements of the pallet bottom

For collars, sleeves or a hat on top of the pallet the maximum size can be 20 mm bigger than ideal
measurement. So instead of 800 +/-5 it can be 795–820 mm as an example.
Marking on the box or collar side should clearly list that it is stackable with at least 1 000 kg on top
for Euro variant and at least 500 kg on top for the half Euro pallet according to ISO 7000 / 0630. It is
also allowed to mark with similar markings that clearly shows the forklift and truck driver the unit’s
stackability from a weight perspective. See Scania Technical Regulation TB3530 for this and other
marking guidelines.
The box shall be able to withstand the specified amount of pressure during a compression test
(BCT) under the following conditions:
• Temperature 20°C
• 90% relative humidity
• Conditioned according to ISO 2233
Test setup: complete box including pallet and empty pallet placed on top.
The lid shall be of “hat type”, see Figure 2. If a wooden box is used a different lid will be approved.

Figure 2 – “hat type” lid

All packaging material shall be recyclable.

Strapping should be done with 1 plastic strap if net weight is below 200 kg and with 2 straps if net
weight is above 200kg. Shrink wrap shall not be used.

3.3 Ordering Scania packaging material

The Organisation is responsible for ordering the correct packaging material in due time.

3.3.1 European Organisations

The lead-time for ordering packaging is the following: order any day in week 1 for delivery any day
week 3. More details can be found on SSP in Embasy User Guide.
European Organisations order packaging material via Scania’s packaging system Embasy available
on SSP. Information about how to order and who to contact regarding packaging-related issues is
found on SSP.

3.3.2 Latin American Organisations

For Latin America Organisations there are two alternatives:
• If the part is part of a Milk Run flow, the transport bookings for packaging material are done
in SIGEM;
• If the part is not part of a Milk Run flow, the Organisation shall send an e-mail to
expedicao_embalagem@scania.com to order packaging material.
For a new Organisation, it is the Organisation’s responsibility to pick up the first packaging batch in
order to start up the flow.

3.3.3 Scania Parts logistics

Packaging material, cardboard boxes, plastic bags and labels can be ordered from Scania Parts
Logistics AB. The order shall include the following information:
• Organisation customer no. or Organisation no.
• Scania part no. for the packaging material (568XXX)
• Quantity, in multiples of quantity units
• All information, which shall be printed on the labels (only when labels are ordered)
• Goods address: to which address shall the packaging material be shipped
The order shall be sent to:
E-mail supply_control.cw2@scania.com
Telephone: +32 89 85 02 03
Telefax +46 8 553 50997 (fax to mailbox)

monthly basis or upon request.
For Latin American Organisations this is required before each new request in SIGEM.
§7. European Organisations shall register Receive and Dispatch of packaging in the Embasy
