OB Anti-Blocking System (ABS), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), non-EBS buses

Fuses on front electrical centre card OB Circuit descriptions
Fuse Rating Circuit protected by fuse Notes:
F12 10A ABS/ASR control unit (A12) 1. This circuit only applies to buses that are not equipped with the Electronic Braking System (EBS). Refer to Schematic
F25 10A ABS/ASR control unit (A12) OC or OCB for buses that are equipped with EBS.
2. The connection shown on the Schematic diagram at pin 18:5 of the ABS/ASR control unit (A12, previously (9008))
No. (Old no.) Component to body connector “BB4” pin 7 is no longer used. This part of the door brake function is now performed by software
A12 (9008) ABS/ASR control unit instead.
B13 (7057LF) Wheel speed sender, left front
B14 (7057RF) Wheel speed sender, right front Anti-Blocking System (ABS)
B15 (7057LR) Wheel speed sender, left rear The ABS system is fully automatic, i.e. it does not require any input from the driver. ABS prevents wheels locking
B16 (7057RR) Wheel speed sender, right rear during braking by momentarily releasing and then re-applying the brakes, by means of solenoid valves (Y11-14),
S31 (1155) ASR inhibit switch one for each wheel.

Y11 (6013LF) Wheel brake ABS solenoid valve, left front During ABS operation, the retarder, engine braking and transmission lock-up functions are disabled by means of
Y12 (6013RF) Wheel brake ABS solenoid valve, right front signals transmitted via the J1939 data bus to the appropriate control units.
Y13 (6013LR) Wheel brake ABS solenoid valve, left drive wheel Pin 18:18 of the ABS control unit (A12) will be grounded if the control unit is not plugged in, or is not functional.
Y14 (6013RR) Wheel brake ABS solenoid valve, right drive wheel This low digital input to the Bus Instrument Cluster (A03CTR) at pin E15 or CY17 will light the ABS warning lamp
(E908) on the instrument panel. Diagonal connections ensure that even if one or more ABS channels is not working,
wheel braking will be stable and evenly applied.
Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)
If the optional ASR system is installed, its operation is also automatic; if one drive wheel begins to turn faster than
the other, indicating slipping, solenoid valve (S925) will be energised by high and low digital outputs from the
control unit (A12) pins 15:4 and 15:7 respectively, and brake both drive wheels by allowing compressed air through
to the ABS solenoid valves (Y11-14). This slows or momentarily stops the drive wheels, which are then released to
start turning again. If one or both wheels again begins to slip, the ASR solenoid valve (S925) is again activated via
the ASR valves (Y11-14) to brake them. This continues and is repeated as often as necessary. The driver is advised
by an ASR symbol on the instrument panel display when ASR is in operation.
The ASR inhibit switch (S31) is provided to enable the driver to switch off the ASR when encountering certain road
conditions where ASR operation would not be advisable.
Switch feed from CECM-C (A90)
CECM-C (A90) pin B29 goes high to provide a “15” +24V switch feed signal to the ASR inhibit switch (S31) and the
differential lock switch (S08) whenever the “15” supply is made available via the key switch (S15) or feed switch
(S911).
Differential lock
In buses which have ABS installed instead of the Electronic Braking System (EBS), the differential lock switch (S08)
(see Schematic AD) initiates differential locking by sending the signal to CECM-C (A90) pin B22 high. The differ-
ential is then locked by solenoid valve (Y02), and confirmation comes from the differential lock engaged contact
((S45). Both these components are shown on Schematic OC.

F12 10A EBS control unit (A21) control unit (A21) pins 9:4 and 9:7. The potentiometers are fed from pin 9:2 and their signal ground is at pin 9:3. The
control unit calculates the required braking force for each wheel, depending on load, measured as the maximum drive

B03 (6077) EBS footbrake valve dual channel modulator (U03) for the drive wheels. Each modulator controls the pneumatic pressure to its associated
B13 (7057LF) Speed sender, left front wheel brake cylinders, and also has a feed input and a ground connection to the EBS control unit (A21). The pressure signals
B14 (7057RF) Speed sender, right front wheel are transmitted from the EBS control unit (A21) to the modulators as 250 kbit/s data via individual twisted pair cables.

B16 (7057RR) Speed sender, right drive wheel The wheel speed sensors (B13-B16) and the brake lining wear sensors (B40-B43) use the C-bus to send their

display to warn that the brakes must be checked.

Traction control
If traction control is selected by closing the traction control switch (S31), the signal at (A21) pin 18:5 goes low and
traction control is engaged. This increases the reference speed for the ASR anti-slip function by 10 km/h. The effect
of this change is to permit a greater amount of wheel spin, which may be necessary on loose surfaces such as gravel,
mud or snow. The lamp in the traction control switch (S31) is lit all the time that the higher reference speed is applied.
The traction control switch (S31) must be pressed once more (toggled) to switch off this traction control feature.

Differential lock
When the differential lock switch (S08), shown on Schematic AD, is closed, a high signal input replaces the ground
input at the EBS control unit (A21) pin 9:9. The differential is then locked by solenoid valve (Y02), and confirmation
that differential locking has actually engaged comes from the differential lock engaged contact (S45) via Chassis
Module 2 (A92) pin 2:17, see Schematic AF.

If differential lock has not been reported by contact (S45) as engaged within 10 seconds after being selected by the
driver, traction control begins to operate anyway. This applies braking to the fastest rotating wheel, to prevent it
spinning.

OG Retarder for manual gearbox

Fuses and relays on rear electrical centre card OG Circuit description
Fuse Rating Circuit protected by fuse The retarder control unit (A903) contains its own computer program to translate the requests for retarding received
F17 10A Feed and latch for retarder control unit (A903) from the retarder hand (S24) and foot (R40) controls, shown on Schematic AC, into control signals to the solenoid
F28 5A Retarder control unit feed relay (RL10)R supply valve (Y17) that applies the retardation. When the retarder foot control (R40) senses that the footbrake pedal has
moved 8 degrees from its rest position retardation begins. On reaching 70% retardation, the EBS system is initiated.
Relay Circuit The control unit (A903) is integrated into the multiplexed vehicle electronic control system. The incoming analog
RL9 “30” retarder feed control signals from the hand and foot controlsreceived at pins B27 and B24 respectively are converted in the Vehicle
RL10 “15” retarder feed control Electronic Control Unit (A17) into digital control signals that are transferred to the retarder control unit (A903) via
the J1939 databus.

B23 (7060) Retarder oil temperature sensor the retarder control unit (A903) that translates these steps into control signals to the proportional valve.
B900 (754) Retarder pressure sensor The retarder oil pressure (B900), cooling water temperature (B903) and oil temperature (B23) sensors are directly
B903 (756R) Retarder water temperature sensor connected to the control unit (A903).
Y17 (6018A) Retarder solenoid valve
Fault indications and fault codes associated with the hand and foot controls and their signals are sent out over the
J1587 databus, being presented as icons on the Bus Instrument Cluster at the same time as the yellow INFO lamp
on the instrument panel is lit.
The control unit (A903) normally receives “+30” power via relay RL10(R) at pin 55 as soon as the rear “+15” line is
energised. The retarder control unit (A903) then energises relay RL9(R) to act as a latch. When the order to switch
off the control unit is received from the CAN bus as the bus is being powered down, RL9(R) de-energises to remove
the power from pin 55; by this time RL10(R) will already have de-energised.
When a manual retarder is installed in the bus, the switch for retarder plus/minus to pins A20 and A21 of the VECU
(A17) operates to provide the positions OFF, A (whereby the foot pedal controls the amount of retarding), 1, 2, 3
and 4. Typical values of retardation for positions 1 to 4 are 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, but these can be pre-pro-
grammed to other values.
With the retarder switch in position A it is also possible to set a particular retarding speed, using the +/- button
on the end of the retarder stalk. Once this speed has been set, the retarder will come into operation as required
to maintain a constant speed of descent down an incline.
The brake lights switch (S48) is installed on buses equipped with EBS to provide the function of activating the
retarder and brake lights instead of the foot control (R40).

OK Volvo EGS gearbox

Fuses and relays on front electrical centre card OK Circuit descriptions

F29 7.5A Primary “15” feed to (A904) then supplies current from the “30” front line via fuse F17(F) to pin K1:1 of the control unit (A904). Pin K1:22 then
energises the safety neutral relay RL9(F), since pin K1:21 is grounded. When the engine is switched off, or if the
Relay Circuit supply from the “15” line is broken, relay RL9(F) remains energised to maintain power to the control unit (A904) and
RL9 EGS control unit (A904) safety neutral the currently selected gear remains selected until the control unit (A904) detects from internal signals that the driver
RL10 EGS control unit “15” primary feed has selected neutral. If the road speed (signalled from CECM-C (A90) pin A19 to (A904) pin K1:6) at this time is less
than 3 to 5 km/h, the control unit ignores any driver action and sets the EGS gear selector and gearbox to neutral.

Y903 (MS) Gear lever inhibit cylinder solenoid valve lamp (E913). Note that all the gearbox solenoid valves are closed when they are de-energised.
Conditions for starting the engine
To ensure that the signals at Chassis Module 3 (A93) pins 6 and 18 (Schematic AG) will permit the engine to be
started, the control unit program sets pin K1:20 low once the system has confirmed (as described above) that neu-
tral is selected and engaged, or that the clutch is depressed, detected by (B905) as described below.
Clutch sensor
The inductive sensor (B905) sends signal 2063B to the control unit pin K1:10 low when the clutch pedal is fully
depressed, confirming to the EGS gearbox system that the clutch has been released. The sensor has its own sepa-
rate supply from the “15” front line via fuse F27(F), controlled by the key switch (S15) or feed switch (S911).
Gear range signal
If the driver switches the gearbox into high range, (sometimes referred to as overdrive), signal 9059B from the control
unit pin K1:2 goes low, informing the Bus Instrument Cluster (A03) via (A93), (A90) and the J1587 databus.
“Limp-home” switch and card functions
The “limp-home” emergency switch (S19) located on the EGS gear lever housing permits five of the gears to be
selected if the system has partially failed. Gear changing will however be slower than usual if this switch is used.
Only the clutch position sensor (B905) input remains connected. In the case of a total failure, the “limp-home card”
located on the side of the control unit (A904) can be plugged into the 35-way connector instead of the control unit.
This allows a limited gear change function to be used. The system can be reprogrammed by means of a DIP switch
located beneath the control unit (A904) to suit different engine and transmission combinations.
Diagnostics
This gearbox has its own diagnostics lamp (E913) which can report faults by means of blink codes. Information on
how to operate this diagnostic system is contained in separate service documentation. Note that the EGS gearbox
diagnostics are not integrated into the multiplex diagnostic system.

OL ZF EST-47 automatic transmission

Fuse on front electrical centre card OL Circuit description
Fuse Rating Circuit protected by fuse The transmission control unit (A901), the engine control unit (9070) (Schematic BL) and the ABS/ASR control unit
F29 7.5A ZF EST-47 control unit (A901) (A12) (Schematic OB) must power up within 1.5 seconds of each other to work properly. Normally the vehicle soft-

Y904 (X8/Y1) Retarder proportional valve is sent via the J1939 databus to the CECM-C (A90) for use in its software.
Y905 (X9/Y2) Retarder accumulator valve Transmission retarder
The transmission includes a built-in hydraulic retarder, activated at (A901) pin 51 by a foot retarder signal from
(R40) via VECU pin B:27 and the 1939 databus to the control unit (A901). This also controls the retarder accumulator
and proportional valves via (A901) pins 8 and 6 respectively. Operating the retarder enable switch (S905) (see Sche-
matic AC) lights its built-in retarder engaged lamp and grounds VECU (A17) pin 29. This signal is forwarded via the
1939 databus to the transmission control unit (A901) and also to the Bus Instrument Cluster to present the retarder
engaged icon on its display. A resistor connected to (A901) pin 49 can be set on bench testing to calibrate the
retarder torque.
The retarder oil temperature is constantly monitored by the temperature sensor (S926) connected between (A901)
pins 3 and 24. If the temperature exceeds a predetermined level, a warning is activated on the Bus Instrument Cluster
(A03) and the retarder temperature high icon is displayed to the driver. The standard default (A901) program auto-
matically reduces the retarder torque gradually in proportion to the degree of excess sump temperature.
Neutral on Bus Stop
City buses may be equipped with NBS. This disengages certain clutches to reduce transmission friction if: the
footbrake is applied, increasing pressure in the footbrake pneumatic circuit and closing (S930) to make (A901) pin
20 go high and the bus is moving slower than 3 km/h and the accelerator is at idle and the transmission is in first
gear. The transmission will revert to first gear if any of these functions is removed; normally the footbrake will be
released first.
Alternative gearshift program
If the alternative gearshift program switch (S927) is closed to apply a high digital input to (A901) pin 64, (A901) will
switch its software to use an alternative gear shifting program. The default program provides best economy.
Diagnostics
Both the (P900) and (P901) connectors can supply ZF transmission diagnostic information to external equipment as
required, via the J1587 databus (see Schematics AC, AD and BL for the diagnostic and end-of-line connections).

OM Voith automatic transmission

Fuses and relay on rear electrical centre card OM Circuit description
Fuse Rating Circuit protected by fuse The Voith transmission control unit (A900), the engine control unit (A14) (Schematic BL) and the ABS/ASR control
F29 7.5A Voith transmission control unit (A900) unit (A12) (Schematic OB) must power up within 1.5 seconds of each other to work properly. Normally the vehicle
F30 7.5A Voith transmission control unit (A900) software ensures this. Note that the “+15” supply from fuse F10(R) to control unit (A900) pin 53 is only required on
(when no ABS) buses that have Voith automatic transmissions but are not equipped with ABS.
The control unit (A900) contains its own computer program to translate the driver’s gear selection from the buttons
Relay Circuit (S909) into energising sequences for the solenoid valves (WR, DK, EK, etc.) that control the selection and engage-
RL4 Voith transmission control unit (A900) ment of gears in the transmission. An important input to the transmission software is the accelerator pedal position,
received from the position sensor (B25) by the VECU (A17) at pin B:8 (see Schematic AC) and transmitted via the
No. (Old no.) Component J1939 databus to the control unit (A900). When the parking brake has been engaged by the driver, the signal
A900 (909) Voith automatic transmission control unit change from (S912) at the VECU (A17) pin B:11 is transmitted via the J1939 databus to the transmission control unit
S909 (194) Voith transmission gear selector buttons (A900), which orders the transmission to switch into neutral.
S927 (1129) Alternative gearshift program switch Reverse and neutral gear selected signals are transmitted from the gear selector (S909) to the CECM-C (A90) via the
S930 (NBS) Neutral on Bus Stop switch C-bus. The reverse gear information is used by the reversing lights, via (A94) pin 13 and body connection “BB7”
pin 2 (see Schematic AH). Neutral gear selection is required by the bus starting circuit via (A93) (see Schematic
AG). The current gear position, derived from the gear selector (S909) signals to the control unit (A900), is sent via
the J1939 databus to the CECM-C (A90) for use in its software.
Transmission retarder (also see Schematic AC)
The transmission includes a built-in hydraulic retarder, activated by a foot retarder signal from (R40) via VECU
(A17) pin B:27 and the 1939 databus to the control unit (A900). This controls the appropriate retarder valves in the
transmission. Operating the retarder enable switch (S905) grounds VECU (A17) pin B29. This signal is forwarded
via the J1939 databus to the transmission control unit (A900) and also to the Bus Instrument Cluster (A03) to
present the retarder engaged icon on its display.
The retarder oil temperature is constantly monitored by a built-in temperature sensor. If the temperature exceeds a
predetermined level, a warning is activated on the Bus Instrument Cluster and the retarder temperature high icon is
displayed to the driver. The standard default (A900) program automatically reduces the retarder torque gradually in
proportion to the degree of excess sump temperature.
Neutral on Bus Stop
City buses may be equipped with NBS. This disengages certain clutches to reduce transmission friction if: the
footbrake is applied, increasing pressure in the footbrake pneumatic circuit and closing (S930) to make (A900) pins
12 and 35 go high and the bus is moving slower than 3 km/h and the accelerator is at idle and the transmission is
in first gear. The transmission will revert to first gear if any of these functions is removed; normally the footbrake
will be released first.
Alternative gearshift program
If the alternative gearshift program switch (1129) is closed to apply a high digital input to (A900) pin 48, the control
unit will change its software program to use an alternative gear shifting program. The default program provides best
economy.
Diagnostics
Both the (P900) and (P901) connectors can supply Voith transmission diagnostic information to external equipment

ON Allison automatic transmission

Fuse on front electrical centre card ON Circuit description
Fuse Rating Circuit protected by fuse The Allison transmission control unit (A13), the engine control unit (A14) (Schematic BL) and the ABS/ASR con-
F29 7.5A Allison transmission gear selector (S929) trol unit (A12) (Schematic OB) must power up within 1.5 seconds of each other to work properly. Normally the
vehicle software ensures this.
Fuses on rear electrical centre card
The control unit (A13) contains its own computer program to translate the driver’s gear selection from the buttons
Fuse Rating Circuit protected by fuse (S929) into energising sequences for the solenoid valves that control the selection and engagement of gears in the
F29 7.5A Allison transmission control unit (A13) transmission. An important input to the transmission software is the accelerator pedal position, received from the
F30 7.5A Allison transm. control unit (A13) (no ABS) position sensor (B25) by the VECU (A17) at pin B:8 (see Schematic AC) and transmitted via the J1939 databus to the
control unit (A13). When the parking brake has been engaged by the driver, the signal change from (S912) at the
No. (Old no.) Component VECU (A17) pin B:11 is transmitted via the J1939 databus to the transmission control unit (A13), which orders the
A13 (9057) Allison automatic transmission control unit transmission to switch into neutral.
S48 (216) Brake lights closing contact Reverse and neutral gear selected signals are transmitted from the gear selector (S929) to the CECM-C (A90) via the
S927 (1129) Alternative gearshift program switch control unit (A13) and the J1939 databus. The reverse gear information is used by the reversing lights, via (A94) pin
S929 (8010) Allison transmission gear selector buttons 13 and body connection “BB7” pin 2 (see Schematic AH). Neutral gear selection is required by the bus starting
circuit via (A93) (see Schematic AG). The current gear position, derived from the gear selector (S929) signals to the
control unit (A13), is sent via the J1939 databus to the CECM-C (A90) for use in its software.
Transmission retarder (also see Schematic AC)
The transmission includes a built-in hydraulic retarder, activated by a foot retarder signal from (R40) via VECU
(A17) pin B:27 and the J1939 databus to the control unit (A13). This controls the appropriate retarder valves in the
transmission. Operating the retarder enable switch (S905) grounds VECU (A17) pin B29. This signal is forwarded
via the J1939 databus to the transmission control unit (A13) and also to the Bus Instrument Cluster (A03) to present
the retarder engaged icon on its display.
The retarder oil temperature is constantly monitored by a built-in temperature sensor. If the temperature exceeds a
predetermined level, a warning is activated on the Bus Instrument Cluster and the retarder temperature high icon is
displayed to the driver. The standard default (A13) program automatically reduces the retarder torque gradually in
proportion to the degree of excess sump temperature.
Neutral on Bus Stop
City buses may be equipped with NBS. This disengages certain clutches to reduce transmission friction if: the
footbrake is applied, increasing pressure in the footbrake pneumatic circuit and closing the NBS switch (S930) to
make (A13) pins V11 and V29 go high and the bus is moving slower than 3 km/h and the accelerator is at idle and
the transmission is in first gear. The transmission will revert to first gear if any of these functions is removed; nor-
mally the footbrake will be released first.
Alternative gearshift program
If the alternative gearshift program switch (S927) is closed to apply a high digital input to (A13) pin V12, the control
unit will change its software program to use an alternative gear shifting program. The default program provides best
economy.
Diagnostics
Both the (P900) and (P901) connectors may supply Allison transmission diagnostic information to external equip-
ment as required, via the J1587 databus (see Sch. AC, AD and BL for the diagnostic and end-of-line connections).
There is also a “DIA” connector located in the rear electrical centre intended for use with proprietary Allison diag-
nostic tools.
