OBJECTIVE
▪ To know the difference of power quality by using UPQC
and without UPQC by using Matlab Simulation

▪ To design a UPQC using series and shunt active filter to

compensate the voltage and current respectively.
INTRODUCTION

o Nowadays the end users and electric utilities are focusing on

the electric power quality.

o The main reason for focusing on the quality of electric power

is increase in use of electronic loads, which are nonlinear in
nature.
o Mostly, the electronic equipment’s used are microprocessor
based and they are much sensitive to the electric power
quality.

o The various issues of power quality like voltage swell, sag,

interruptions, harmonic current and voltage harmonics are
becoming a challenge to the utilities.
UPQC(UNIFIED POWER QUALITY CONDITIONER)

▪ The use of separate shunt and series

active power filter may not be
economical.

▪ Hence, the Moran introduced one of the

devices combining both shunt and series
active filter.
BLOCK DIAGRAM OF UPQC
SHUNT INVERTER

The inverters connected in series to the supply

known as the series active filter. This inverter
behaves as a voltage source line which eliminates a
voltage interruption.

SERIES INVERTER

The inverter connected in shunt to the supply line is

known as shunt active filter. It eliminates the current
related harmonics also minimize the reactive current
in the load circuit.
DC LINK
The capacitor or inductor can be used as common DC link.
The capacitor is used as DC link, which supplies the DC
voltage.

LC FILTER

The output of the series active filter produces high switching

ripples. The LC filter minimizes the ripples in a system. The
LC filter acts as the low-pass filter.
Lsh Filter

The Lsh filter act as a high-pass filter. The ripples during

switching mode are minimized by Lsh filter.

INJECTION TRANSFORMER

The series injection transformer connected to series

convertor.
CAPACITOR

Capacitor can be used a source for both active

and reactive power and the use of any outer DC
source e.g. battery etc. can be eliminated
SYNCHRONOUS REFERENCE FRAME THEORY

• In this theory controlling of the three-phase converters

using the rotating frame theory by converting the
source voltage and current to direct and quadrature
axis is done.
• The voltage is converted to d q in the series controller
and current is converted to d q in the series controller.
• Consider the shunt converter performs the process of
elimination of harmonics and series converter
performs process of elimination of the voltage related
problems.

WORKING
• Basically UPQC (Unified Power Quality
Conditioner) is a equipment which is used for
compensate for voltage distortion and voltage
unbalance in a power system.
• UPQC provides the VAR requirement of the load, so
that the supply voltage and current are always in
phase; therefore, no additional power factor
correction equipment is required.
