and voltage from a disturbed signal.

improvement.
 Improvement of power quality by using UPQC and
MVC
Introduction
1. Disturbance in electrical circuit
2. The main cause for distortion is harmonics, notching, and
interharmonics. Distortion is that the fundamental
frequency sine wave is represented as super position of all
harmonic frequency sine waves on fundamental sine
wave.
3. UPQC is a multifunction power conditioner that can
be used to compensate various voltage disturbances
of the power supply, to correct voltage fluctuation,
and to prevent the harmonic load current from
entering the power system.
Introduction of UPQC
 The Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC),
which was first presented in 1995 by Hirofumi Akagi.
 It reduces the harmonics in the supply current, so that
it can improve utility current quality for nonlinear
loads.
 UPQC provides the VAR requirement of the load, so
that the supply voltage and current are always in
phase; therefore, no additional power factor correction
equipment is required.
 UPQC maintains load end voltage at the rated value
even in the presence of supply voltage sag.
Disturbance in waveform
 Due to Non-linear load. Ex BJT, MOSFET
 Due to voltage sag, voltage swell, Interruption.
 Voltage Fluctuation
 Waveform disturbance due to DC offset, Noise,
Notching, Harmonics
Disturbed Waveform due to noise
Working of UPQC
 Basically UPQC (Unified Power Quality conditioner) is
a equipment which is used for compensate for voltage
distortion and voltage unbalance in a power system
 UPQC provides the VAR requirement of the load, so that
the supply voltage and current are always in phase;
therefore, no additional power factor correction equipment
is required.

Active Power Filter
 Active power filters were used for power quality
improvement.
Two types of filter used in UPQC
1. Shunt Active Power Filter
 The main objectives of the shunt active filter
 are: to compensate for the load reactive power demand
and unbalance, to eliminate the harmonics from the
supply current, and to regulate the common dc link
voltage.
2. Series Active power filter:-
1. A series APF injects a voltage component in series
with supply voltage and removes harmonic
component.
After that the reference voltage is given to hysteresis
voltage controller with the actual output voltage of
series APF and the PWM signal is generated which is
given to voltage source inverter. The DC voltage is
given across VSI so to get real power difference
between source and load.
Multivariable Controller
 Multivariable processes has more than one input
variables or more than one output variables. Here are a
few examples of multivariable processes:
 It generate the PWM signal
 It works as the feedback of UPQC
Simulink model of UPQF for power improvement
Noisy or disturbed waveforms
 The supply voltage waveform which is injected in
UPQC. This is a disturbed waveform shown below-

Alternating current:-
Advantages of UPQC:-
 Reduction in harmonics, noise and any disturbed
signal.
 Improve the quality of power.
 Waveform quality is very good.
 In any generation system if disturbance occurs then it
can be reduced
Disadvantage of UPQC:-
 Central control is required and it is complicated.
 Conduction loss is high.
 Capacity expansion is difficult.
Applications
 It has to be observe to be satisfaction for various power
quality improvement.
 It is useful for balancing power factor, voltage and
current harmonic mitigation.
 Mitigation of voltage sag, swell and voltage dip.
 Source current THD and load voltage THD improved.
 In addition of this performance of UPQC has been
found satisfactory during transient condition.
Conclusion
 Here Unified power Quality Conditioner work with
Multivariable Controller as a feedback and give us a
desired alternating waveform. In this input waveforms
are full from noise and we can say that it is an
disturbed waveform but after entering inside the
UPQC and MVC as a feedback it gives us an pure
alternating waveforms
