The New York City Language Centre

Hi, I’m Sandrine Bisset. I’m a teacher at The New York
City Language Centre. I’m from Marseille in the south of
France and I’m 29 years old. My mother is Swiss and my
father is French. He’s a teacher in a school in Paris. My
friend is Antoine. He’s from France, too, and he’s
a student at Columbia University here in New York.
Students come to The New York City Language Centre
to learn different languages. I’m the French teacher and
my class has students from America, Africa, Asia, and
Europe. It’s very interesting to meet different people and
the classes are always fun. The students always speak
French together because it’s the best way to learn the
language.
My friends Giovanni and Lina are also teachers at The
Language Centre. Giovanni is the Italian teacher. He’s
from Rome. Lina is the German and Spanish teacher. She
comes from Munich in Germany. Her mother is Spanish.

Two writers
My name’s Simon Charlton and I’m a writer. My wife’s
name is Louisa and she’s a teacher in a language school
and also a writer like me. I’m at my desk every day but
Louisa has classes at school on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Let’s look at Louisa’s desk. On her desk, she has an
expensive laptop, a pink notebook and two green pens.
She also has three or four dictionaries, a box of tissues,
and a beautiful blue lamp. Her keys, glasses, and purse
are in her bag and the bag is under the desk. Louisa is
very tidy. I think she feels stressed when she looks at my
untidy desk.
I have a big, dark grey desk with keys, old bus tickets,
magazines, a photo of my family, and a lot of books on
it. I have boxes of books under my desk too.
Like Louisa, I have a computer but I also write a lot
on paper. I have hundreds of pens and pencils and I
have pages from my books all over my desk. I’m hot
in my chair but I don’t open the window because I’m
worried about all the pieces of paper!

Three of our readers tell us about their lives.
Maria Jose lives in Tenerife, Spain. She gets up at seven

shower and makes breakfast for her husband and her two
children. She takes the children to school and starts work

she shows tourists around the island. She always goes
home for lunch and then in the afternoon she works in
the tourist office in Santa Cruz. She works from Monday
to Friday, and twice a month she also goes to work on
Saturday. In her free time she reads books with the
children and does exercise with her friend, Carmen.
Kenzo is a bank manager. He works in Osaka, Japan.
He usually gets up very early and leaves his flat at seven
o’clock. He takes the train to work and arrives at the bank

to his parents’ house for dinner.
Françoise is from Switzerland. She’s a teacher in a
school in Geneva. She is at school for seven hours every
day and also works at home in the evenings but she
doesn’t work at the weekend. Françoise has a lot of friends
and they like to have dinner in expensive restaurants. She
goes to bed very late on Saturday evenings. Françoise
doesn’t do sports or go to the gym, but she has two dogs

A fantastic festival
Sziget festival
When? In August
Where? Budapest, Hungary
How long? Seven days
First festival? 1993
This summer why not go to Sziget festival in Hungary?
Sziget means island and the festival takes place in the
capital city on Old Buda Island. People come from all over
Europe to this festival as well as from Hungary. There’s
even a special festival train called the Sziget Express which
brings people from Germany, Italy, and France.
If you like big festivals, then Sziget is the one for you.
Almost 500,000 people go to this festival every year.
This year it is from Wednesday 8 to Wednesday 15 August
so you can enjoy a week full of music, theatre, film, and
other fun.
What kinds of music performances can you see? Well,
Sziget is famous for dance and hip hop music but now
you can also hear rock, reggae, jazz, and pop. Some
performers from recent years are singers such as Rihanna,
and bands like Florence and the Machine and Kasabian.
Sziget has a lot of the same performers as the world-
famous Glastonbury festival in England, but it has one
thing that Glastonbury doesn’t have – fantastic weather!
The summer in Hungary is always quite hot – often over
30 degrees. A lot of the music is outside but if you really
don’t like being in the sun, don’t worry because some of
the performances are inside.

This is a funny story and it’s true. My name’s Shanice. I

work in a big London hospital as a nurse and I often work
on New Year’s Eve so usually I don’t do anything special.
Last year, however, my friend Becky decided to have a
New Year’s Eve party so I asked the hospital administrators
to give me the night off. They said they needed me but
I could finish work at 11 p.m.
So, on 31 December 2017 I took my party clothes to
work with me so I could get dressed for the party later.
When 11 p.m. came, I found an empty room and put on
my party dress. Then I booked a taxi from the hospital
to my friend’s house. I was really hungry so I bought a
sandwich from the small shop in the reception area and
had some of it while I waited for the taxi. Of course, it’s a
busy night because a lot of people go out to restaurants
or parties and I wasn’t surprised when my taxi was late.
I was a bit worried by 11.20 so I phoned them again.
The taxi arrived at 11.30 and I said where I wanted to
go, got into the car, and put my headphones on. I closed
my eyes and enjoyed my favourite music. After about
15 minutes I looked out of the window and I didn’t see any
streets or houses that I knew. I asked the driver where we
were and he said ‘Very near Agar Road’. But Becky lived
on Agar Grove. We were in completely the wrong part of
London! I told the driver about the mistake and he was
very sorry. He quickly changed direction but there wasn’t
time so last year I celebrated New Year in the back of
a taxi with a bit of a sandwich and a bottle of water!

neighbours but the house is just outside a small village and
from the kitchen window there is a fantastic view of the river.
It is a twenty-minute drive to the town of Belmont or you can
get a bus from the bus stop in front of the house.
25 The Crofts is a town house with three floors, built in
the 1980s. It is in a popular area of Belmont, near the river.
People often choose The Crofts because the houses are very
large and comfortable. Also, the house is a five-minute walk
from the train station and there are trains to London every
hour. There are two bedrooms and a bathroom on the first
floor and there are two more bedrooms on the top floor
with another small bathroom. The house has three rooms
downstairs: a living room, a kitchen, and a dining room.
Behind the house there is a long garden and there is also a
garage to park your car in.

The students in our English class are from

Italy, Japan, and Brazil. After talking about typical
food, we found that we all have breakfast, lunch, and
dinner. But we were surprised about how different
these meals are!
Italy. A typical Italian breakfast isn’t very big; just
coffee and some kind of cake. Our delicious cappuccino
is famous all over the world. For lunch, we have
two dishes – the first is pasta and then the second is
meat or fish with vegetables. Lunch is usually from
1 until 3 p.m. and it’s often bigger than dinner, which
starts at 7 or 8 p.m.
Japan. In Japan we really like rice and in the past
everybody ate it for breakfast. Now, a lot of Japanese
people have European-style food when they get up. We
are big fans of fish and seafood. In general, our meals
are smaller than in Brazil or Italy. One popular thing
in Japan is bento. This is a kind of lunch box which you
can make at home or buy at the shop on the way to the
office. It’s very beautiful and sometimes takes a long
time to make.
Brazil. A favourite place for lunch in Brazil is called
a churrascaria. In this kind of restaurant you can enjoy
steak and other meat but you need to be hungry! If you
don’t like eating a large lunch, you can buy some street
food like pastel de queijo, which is a hot snack with
cheese inside. We have dinner at around 8.30 p.m.

Here are four of the best places I visited, starting

with Venezuela in September.

Canaima, Venezuela
I didn’t go to the capital, Caracas. I only went to
Canaima, which is the smallest place in this blog. It’s a
quiet town in a beautiful national park and people go
there because it is the closest place to Angel Falls, the
world’s highest waterfall. I took a lot of photos but the
video is better because you can hear the noise of all
that water!

Cuzco, Peru
Next, I travelled through Colombia to Peru to see
some of the oldest temples in the world, built by the
Incas. Cuzco, the nearest city, is very friendly to tourists
and I bought a lot of souvenirs. It also has a lot of
lovely old buildings and you can learn more about the
history of the temples if you visit the museums. The
busiest months are June and July and Cuzco is full of
visitors then. I went in December and it wasn’t busy but
it rained every day.

Valparaíso, Chile
Valparaíso was more interesting for me than the
capital, Santiago. It’s a large city, full of colourful
houses and a lot of history. I especially wanted to visit
the place where the writer Pablo Neruda lived. It’s a
house on top of a hill, and you can see the whole city
and the sea from up there. It was one of the most
expensive tourist sites I visited but I really loved it.

Do you have a bucket list?

Today’s topic on our message board asks about your
hopes and dreams. Here are some responses from our
website team.

Jonah
I’m only 18 so there are a lot of things I would like
to do in my life. However, I don’t just want to write a list
of dreams so I’m thinking about things I can really do.
For example, I decided to learn the guitar when I was
sixteen and finally last week I booked some lessons.
Also, I promised to learn to cook because my mum
came to stay in my flat and I could only make toast so
she bought me a cookbook! Now once a week I read
the cookbook carefully and make a new dish. My mum’s
really happy and I’m eating more healthily, too.

Diana
My twin sister and I wrote bucket lists last year
when we were 30 but not all the things are the same.
She would like to be a vegetarian but I don’t especially
want to stop eating meat. We both plan to go to a big
outdoor concert in the next year or two so we can do
that together. We also want to travel but she would
like to see Africa and I hope to go to India. On my list I
wrote ‘meet Rihanna’ but I don’t think that’s going to
happen so instead I really hope to learn to swim. I’m
very frightened of water so it isn’t something I can do
easily but I want to try.

Last weekend our journalist met Olympic skier

Aleksandr Ivanov to ask him about his life and work.

I’m from St Petersburg in the north-west of Russia

but I’m living in Alberta, Canada at the moment
because it’s where some of the greatest skiing teachers
are. My wife and three children are still at home but
I’m going to go back to Russia in two months. I learned
to ski when I was four years old and that’s normal for
Russian children because it always snows a lot in winter.
I was lucky because a famous skier, Oleg Semenov, knew
my father and together they helped me to get better
and better until I could ski at the highest level. Because
I travel a lot, I’ve learned a lot of languages – English,
German, and French. I think French is easy!

I work hard. I get up at 5 a.m., go to the gym,

then go out in the snow. In the evening I often cook
dinner because I find it helps me to relax. Sometimes
I go out to the theatre, but most evenings I prefer to
relax at home. I also play the piano – my wife says
quite badly – and I enjoy taking photos. There are some
of my photos in one of the art galleries in St Petersburg.

I have fallen in love with Canada. The Nordic Centre

where I train is in Canmore, Alberta and the mountains
here are fantastic. Another favourite place is Geneva
in Switzerland. Of course, I’ve been there to ski but I’ve
also visited in summer when it is very sunny and warm.
It’s an interesting city but it isn’t cheap so you can’t go
out every night. There’s a lot to see and last year I had
a nice surprise when I found a beautiful Russian church.

Two sisters
My name’s Kinga. I’m 19 and I’m from Warsaw in
Poland but I’m not living there right now. I’m living and
studying in New York City. I’m a student at The Juilliard
School in Manhattan, where you can study drama,
dance, and music. I play the violin and I’m really happy
I can study music at this famous school because the
teachers are amazing. My course is for six months and I
go to school from Monday to Friday. My classes usually
start at 9 a.m. I don’t live in the centre of New York City
because it’s expensive, so I get up early and travel to
school by bus. I arrive at 8.30 so I can get a coffee in the
school café before my lessons start.
I’m learning a lot of American words and my mum
says I have an American accent now. I love fast food and
I eat hot dogs and French fries two or three times a week.
I have a sister, called Ola, who is 22 and she is also
a very good musician. She plays the piano and she’s
a fantastic singer. She’s living away from home at the
moment too. She’s a receptionist in a big hotel in London
called the Piccadilly Plaza. Our dad is Polish and our
mum is English so we speak two languages. Ola can also
speak French and German and she talks to visitors from
many different countries in her job. She normally works
at the weekend and is often tired because she works
late. Our mum’s brother lives in London so Ola’s staying
with him and our cousins, Rachel and Jack. Rachel loves
cooking delicious food and she usually makes dinner for
my sister.

Hi Rebekkah
How are you? I’m writing to say hello to you from
Armando and Sabrina. Do you know they have moved
house? They live in a village now. They moved in April.
Alex and I visited them last weekend but we got lost
on the way! Armando gave Alex some directions but he
didn’t listen very carefully and also it was quite foggy. I
think Alex turned left in front of the police station when
we needed to turn left opposite the church.
Anyway, Sabrina cooked a delicious meal. There was
pasta with seafood and then ice cream for dessert. And
to celebrate Armando getting a new job, we took a big
cake to eat together. He was really happy because it
was his favourite – chocolate.
And let me tell you about the house. It’s bigger
than the old house but it’s also warmer because the
central heating is better. Armando showed us upstairs.
There are five bedrooms and four bathrooms and a
study with a lot of shelves for all Armando’s books.
Downstairs, the living room has luxurious white carpet
and comfortable brown sofas. We ate dinner in the
dining room where there’s a lovely fireplace with a
beautiful mirror on the wall above it. I’ve shared some
photos on Facebook if you want to look.
We had a good time together but Sabrina is sad that
Armando is going to travel a lot for work and she’s
bored when he is away. I’m going to have a coffee with
her on Friday next week. Are you free? Would you like
to come?
Love Zara
