[1] Milton Keynes, a city in UK, was known for its cows statues Delivery robots: ‫روبوتات التوصيل‬
created by the Canadian artist Liz Leyh in 1978 with the help of
local school children. However, the town has now become more
famous for the widespread use of shopping delivery robots.

[2] The American company Starship Technologies launched the

service of using delivery robots in Milton Keynes in April 2018.
About 200 robots circulate in the streets of the city to deliver items
from supermarkets to people's homes. In 2020, Northampton became
the second UK town to benefit from Starship’s delivery service. Starship’s robots have since completed over
500,000 commercial autonomous deliveries, more than any other company in the world. Starship
Technologies operates seven days per week in local neighborhoods and university campuses across five
countries. The company manages 1000 robots, mainly in Britain and the United States but also in Estonia,
Germany and Denmark.

[3] The machines became widely used when Britain locked down as corona virus hit the
country."Everyone was so in need of contactless delivery during the pandemic," said Andrew Curtis,
manager at Starship Technologies. The use of robots is expanding rapidly as people have become more
excited to try the new technology. The company has signed a new agreement with the Co-op Group of
supermarkets to provide 300 new robots for its deliveries. Starship Technologies is not alone in the delivery
robot competition. In the United States, for example, it is competing with logistics giants such as Amazon
and FedEx.

[4] These robots were first created in 2014. They have an antenna with an orange flag to aid visibility on
the roads. They are equipped with cameras, sensors and a loud alarm if needed. They are 99% autonomous.
But if they become blocked, a technician can take control. When the way is clear, they can reach speeds of
up to six kilometers per hour. Deliveries reach customers in less than an hour. The company said that the use
of the robots is environmentally friendly as well as convenient as customers do not need to move or use their
cars to go shopping. Orders are placed via an application on the phone.

[5] As their numbers grow, the robots have drawn criticism from workers
who fear they will take jobs from them. Many people, however, enjoy the
service. Sheila Rose, 71, walks out of her house and opens the robot with
her smart phone, to take her groceries."If I can use it, anyone can," she said.
"Due to my poor health, I have problems getting out to the shops. It is a
blessing," she adds.
