LESSON 2: COMPREHENSION PASSAGE

There is no doubt that communication technology has exploded in the Pacific
Region, beginning in the Colonial days with wireless radios and transistor radios,
progressing to movie house, television, videos and internet. There are literally
dozens of media organizations owned and managed locally in practically every
island nation in the Pacific.
Local journalists can now comment report on and even criticise traditional,
politically, church and community leaders and issues. Never have we been so
informed –sometimes immediately, sometimes a few hours or days later, on news
within our country, region and other side of the world.
Through the radio we are able to act almost immediately to an urgent cry for help
from our country cousins in the outlying islands. Search and rescue operations
can be carried out within hours and minutes of a disaster out at sea, in the bush
or in the air.
However, despite the advances in information technology allowing, this
tremendous global communications network that overcomes national and regional
boundaries, we are still missing out on something.
We now rely on technology so much for communication we are receiving
information and not always giving it; through SKY, cable or satellite and internet.
We are recipients of every political party’s policies from around the world that we
could almost vote in the U.S Presidential elections or for a change of government in
Albania.

We receive information on just about everything but which sometimes lacks

quality. There is a tendency for the information reported and shared to be what is
spoken of at the moment rather than introducing a different angle to the story or
issues altogether. For example we hear of government representatives opening a
project or community event and the word said are reported but very little of what
the project will mean to the community. For example, we hear that the
development of Mount Kasi will allow assistance to Fiji, but not the environment
degradation and loss of values to people living in those areas.

As consumers of information we are part of the chain of events and as

communicators we are guardians of information so we need to voice such things
as quality, professional guidelines and codes of conduct, and regulations for the
media.
