Activity 1: Greetings and introduction
The teacher will greet the learners, introduce herself, give the overview of
what the learners need to know after the lesson.
Activity 2: Identifying words with affixes in the sentences.
The teacher and the learners will read the sentences.
1. Dream becomes impossible if you think that way.
2. Life makes us laugh, sometimes cry and that makes it colorful.
Let us pay attention to these words:
The words possible and color are root words.
They are also called base words.
impossible colorful

im + possible = impossible color + ful = colorful


The words possible and color are root words.
They are also called base words.
Impossible word is formed when letters like im- are added.
Colorful word is formed when letters like -ful are added.
These letters or group of letters are called affixes.
Affixes can change the meaning of a root word

Affixes has 2 types.


1. Prefix is composed of letters added before a root word.
Example: mis-
mis + behave = misbehave
2. Suffix is composed of letters added after a root word.
Example: -ful
grace + ful = graceful

A. Prefix mis-
mis- = means wrong or badly

mis + behave = misbehave


mis + calculate = miscalculate

Misbehave means behave wrongly or behave badly.


The new word means negative.
Miscalculate means wrong calculation.
Also, the meaning becomes negative.

In short, prefix mis- means wrong or badly. Words with prefix


mis- means negative.
B. Prefix im-
im- means not or opposite of.

im+ perfect = imperfect


im+ mortal = immortal
Imperfect means not perfect.
Immortal means not mortal.

Prefix im- means not or opposite of.


It is only used for root words that begin with b, m, and p.

C. Prefix dis-
dis- means not or opposite of.

dis+ like = dislike


dis + able = disable
Dislike means not like.
Disable means not able.

Prefix dis- means not or opposite of.


When used, new word formed means the opposite of the root word.

Remember that prefixes can change the meaning of a root word. Can you give more
words hat have the prefixes mis-, im-, dis-?

Suffix -ful

-ful = means full of


care+ ful = careful
thank+ ful= thankful
The word careful means full of care.
The word thankful means full of thanks.

Suffix -less

- less = means to be without of.

care+ less = careless


hope+ less= hopeless

Careless means without care.


Careless is the opposite of careful.

Hopeless means without hope.

Suffix -less means to be without of.


It is the opposite of suffix -ful

Suffix -er

-er = is usually added to an action word to mean someone or something


that does the action.

dance+ er = dancer
sing+ er = singer
Someone who dances is called dancer.
Someone who sings is called singer.

Remember that suffixes can change the meaning of a root word.

What is a prefix?
A prefix is composed of letters added before a root word.
Prefix mis- means wrong or badly. Words with prefix mis- means negative.
Prefix im- and dis -means not or opposite of.
Prefix im- is only used for root words that begin with b, m, and p.

What is a suffix?
A Suffix is composed of letters added after a root word.
Suffix -ful means full of.
Suffix -less means to be with out of. It is the opposite of suffix full.
Suffix -er is usually added to an action word to mean someone or something that does
the action.
Prefix and suffix are called affixes. Affixes can change the meaning of a root word.

analysis using the prefixes.
Direction: The underlined words in the sentences below have the prefix which means
“not”. Choose the meaning of the underlined words from the words in the
box.

Exercise 2: Identify meaning of unfamiliar words through structural
analysis using suffixes

Direction: Read the sentence carefully and change the words inside the
parenthesis by using correct suffixes to complete the meaning of the
sentences.
1. Ryan loves being outdoor. He likes to sleep in his tent. He lives star
gazing. However, tonight the sky is _____________ (no stars).
2. The plants in the yard are _____________ (no flower s).

analysis using affixes: prefixes and suffixes.
Direction: Read the sentences carefully and get the meaning of the underlined
