Module 1. Introduction
Lesson 1.2 Lewis and Bronsted- Lowry acids and bases
Assessment
A. Explain how ammonia (NH3) can act as both an acid and a base.
Ammonia can act as an acid and a base because it can accept electron from
other molecules and from ammonium (NH4+), as well as denotes electrons to
other molecules to form a new bond, leaving ammonia as water (H2O).

B. Show how water (H2O) can serve as both an acid and a base.
Water can act as both an acid and a base in a solution and undergoes auto-
ionization where it can be both an acid and a base in itself. When mixed with an
acid, water accepts hydrogen ions and act as a base. However, when water is
mixed with a base, it denotes hydrogen ions and acts as an acid.

C. Show how methanol (CH3OH) can serve as both an acid and a base.
