Hooke’s Law Problems

Remember Force=Spring constant x extension (F = k x X)

1. If a spring starts at a length of 13cm, and it extends to a length of 21cm – what is the extension
of the spring? Can you convert you answer into meters?

2. If the spring constant is 30N/m and a spring is stretched by 0.3m, how much force has been
applied?

3. If the spring constant is 12.6N/m and a spring is stretched by 0.25m, how much force has been
applied?

4. If a 6N weight is hung on a spring, and it extends by 0.2m, what is the spring constant (k)?
What do you think the units are?

5. What force would be needed to extend a spring with a spring constant k=10, by an extension of
0.3m?

6. If the force applied is 4.5N and the spring constant is 9, how much will the spring extend by?

Remember Force=Springconstant x extension (F = k x X)

1. If a spring starts at a length of 13cm, and it extends to a length of 21cm – what is the extension
of the spring? Can you convert you answer into meters?

21-13 = 8cm 8cm = 0.08m

2. If the spring constant is 30N/m and a spring is stretched by 0.3m, how much force has been
applied?

30 x 0.3 = 9N

3. If the spring constant is 12.6N/m and a spring is stretched by 0.25m, how much force has been
applied?

12.6 x 0.25 = 3.15N

4. If a 6N weight is hung on a spring, and it extends by 0.2m, what is the spring constant (k)?
What do you think the units are?

6 ÷ 0.2 = 30 N/m

5. What force would be needed to extend a spring with a spring constant k=10, by an extension of
0.3m?

10 x 0.3 = 3N

6. If the force applied is 4.5N and the spring constant is 9, how much will the spring extend by?

4.5 ÷ 9 = 0.5 m
