Chemistry 20 (Solutions) - DISSOLVING, DISSOCIATING, and IONIZING

1. Define the following terms:

a. Dissolving

b. Dissociation

c. Ionization

d. Endothermic

e. Exothermic

2. Suppose you place a sugar cube (sucrose) and a lump of salt (NaCl) into separate glasses of water. How is the
dissolving process similar/different for both solutes? Use a picture to help explain your answer.

3. Each of the following pure substances is placed in a water environment. For each mixture, state what process will
occur when placed in water (dissolving, dissociating, ionizing – don’t forget the solubility table!)
 Ammonia  Silver sulphate  Aluminum

 Hydrogen chloride  Sodium tetraborate (borax)  Magnesium phosphate

 Barium hydroxide  Propane  Hydrogen nitrate

4. List the 3 processes that occur when a solute is dissolving in a solvent. Classify each process as ENDOTHERMIC or
EXOTHERMIC.

5. Why are some overall dissolving processes exothermic while other are endothermic?
6. Write and balance the ionization, dissociation, or dissolving equations where applicable, when each of the following
substances are added to distilled water. Don’t forget which type of reaction with water is occurring! (check your
solubility table, in some cases…nothing will happen!)

a. Hydrofluoric acid

b. Calcium nitrate

c. Iron (III) iodide

d. Ammonium acetate

e. Nitric acid

f. Lithium bicarbonate

g. Acetone (C3H6O(l))

h. Hydrosulfuric acid

i. Calcium sulphite

j. Barium nitrate

k. Copper (II) chloride

l. Copper (I) chloride

m. Lactose (C12H22O11(s))

n. Potassium permanganate

o. Strontium acetate

p. Aluminum nitrate
