The cat is the main character in the story therefore all personages are played
around the cat; it means that by the end of the story the cat will have become an
important gesture or detail in life for all; even for us; about its significance in the
story.

A first sight this beautiful story shows us an American couple who visited an Italian
town, whose relationship have the communication lost. It means that the
woman lives in a boring life or a marriage without fun, without illusions. The lack of
the affection of the woman was being represented by the loss of the cat in the rain,
because the cat symbolizes the attention, affection which the woman didn’t have
and that she needed instead. “There were big palms and green benches in the
public garden”. (Ernest Hemingway) The author means it is thought that the
happiness has gone of the pair; “in the good weather there was always an artist
with his easel”. (Ernest Hemingway) Hemingway wanted to mention how the
relationship of the couple was something of admiration, esteem by the people.

In first place Ernest Hemingway wrote the cat in the rain because he had wanted to
show us among symbols (metaphorical language) the complexity of the life in pair
chiefly in wild times as “the Second World War”, and in second place because he
had been open-minded about the lack of communication which the societies were
suffering in that time such as the lack of love; as is written in the story: "Il piove [It's
raining]," the wife said. She liked the hotel-keeper. "si, si, Signora, brutto tempo. It
is very bad weather." (Ernest Hemingway).

According to the author Ernest Hemingway In that time the societies didn’t mind
that kind of problem. They didn’t mind their head about it. Nowadays this is a
typical example of the society, too. “It was made of bronze and glistened in the
rain. It was raining”, (Ernest Hemingway); the author means through bronze and
glistened that the pair was passing by “solid” bad emotional situation and “go on”
because the brightness was continuous.

CONCLUSION

The message of the story is that we must keep our mind off a superficial life.
Bearing in mind the fact that we have to be thankful for the simple things in life.

Before I read something more about the author of this story I will have downloaded
the song of Roberto Carlos; by the time I start the next semester I’ll have read the
eldest man and the sea by the same author of the cat in the rain.
