Experiment 3 Prepare and label 50ml Non-Medicated Elixir

Theory
Elixirs are clear, sweetened, pleasantly flavored hydroalcoholic solutions intended for oral use.
Non-medicated elixirs are used as flavors while medicated elixirs are used for therapeutic effect
of drug. Elixirs are usually less sweet and less viscous and less effective than syrups in masking
taste of drugs.
Formula
Sucrose 670.0g
Citric acid monohydrate 8.0g
Sodium citrate 28.0g
Sodium benzoate 8.0g
Ethanol 95% 50.0ml
Orange oil 0.1ml
Purified water q.s. 1000ml

Apparatus: Glass beaker, measuring cylinder, digital balance, spatula, water bath etc..

Procedure
• Weigh the required amount of sucrose and dissolve in 20ml purified water on water
bath
• Cool to room temperature
• Mix orange oil in ethanol and add to simple syrup
• Dissolve citric acid and sodium citrate in 5ml water separately and mix with sucrose
syrup
• Dissolve sodium benzoate in small quantity of water and add to the above syrup
• Make up the volume with purified water upto 50ml, mix and filter.

Use
A pleasant flavored vehicle for medicated elixir
