Septic tank Design:
The septic tank will serve a household of 50 people who produce 90 lpcd of
wastewater. The tank is to be desludged every three years.
P=50; q= 90 lpcd; N= 5 yrs; T = 33 °C
Sedimentation Zone:

th = minimum mean hydraulic retention time, days = 1.5 – 0.3log (Pq) = 0.4
days often it is taken as 1 day but should not be less than 0.2 days.
Vh = 10-3 Pqth = 10-3 x 50 x 90 x 0.4 = 1.81 m3
Sludge digestion zone

Vd = 0.5*10-3Ptd
= 0.803 m3
td depends on temperature,
td =30(1.035)35-33
= 32.1367 days
Digested sludge storage zone:

Vsl = C X P X N = 0.06 x 50 x 5 = 15 m3
C = 0.06 m3 /person/yr for N
Scum storage zone
Vsc = 0.4 Vsl
= 6 m3

Total Volume, V = Vsc + Vd + Vh +Vsl = 6 + 0.803 +1.81 + 15 = 22.89 =23 m3

Taken surface area, A= 2.5 x 5 = 12.5 m2.
Depth:
• scum depth= dsc = 6/12.5 =0.48m,
• sedimentation depth dd = 0.803/12.5 =00.06424 m
dd > Clear space depth =d1+d2,
• digested sludge storage depth= dh = 1.81/12.5 =0.1448 m,
• Sludge Storage depth= dsl = 15/12.5 = 1.2 m.
Sedimentation depth Check:
Clear space depth = submerged scum clear depth(d1) + sludge clear depth (d2)
Now, d1= min 75 mm
And d2 (min 0.3 m) = 0.82 – 0.26A < 0.3 m
Hence, d2 = 0.3 m
Total clear space depth =d1+d2 = 0.375m > dd
Hence, dd= 0.375 m
effective depth = D = dsc + dd + dh+ dsl = 0.48 + 0.375 + 0.1448 + 1.2 = 2.2 m
