Q.NO.01: An undisturbed core sample is obtained from an unsaturated aquifer 1.0 m above the
water table. The sample is 0.150 m high and 0.050 m in diameter. A dry sample of the aquifer
has a specific gravity of 2.65g/cm3 . The weight of the sample is (630 +Name Code) g before
drying and 570 g after drying. Calculate the porosity, volumetric water content, and bulk density
of aquifer. Assume that the volume of voids is 450 cm3.

Given Data:

Dry density of the sample = ρd = 2.65 g/cm3

The weight of the sample wetted = W(wet) = 570 g

The weight of the sample dried = W(dry) = 630 +Name Code = 630 + 16=646 g

Volume of voids = Vv = 450 cm3 = 4.5*10-4 m3

Depth of sample = h = 0.15 m and Dia = 0.05 m

Required Data:

Porosity = n = ?

Water content = θ = ?

Bulk density = ρb = ?

Solution:

As we know that

Porosity = n = Vv/total vol(Vt)

Total volume = Vt = πD2h = π (0.05)2(0.15) = 1.17*10-3 m3

Now n = 4.5*10-4 m3 /1.17*10-3 m3 = 0.38

As we know that
(wet)
Water content = θ = W − 1 = 646 − 1 = 76/570 = 0.13
W(dry) 570

Now Bulk density = ρb = ρd (1-n) = 2.65 (1-0.38) = 1.646 gr3/cm3 = 1643 kg/m3
Q.NO.02: The coefficient of storage of a confined aquifer is found to be 6.8 x10-4 as a result of a pumping
test. The thickness of the aquifer is (10 + Name Code) m, and the porosity of the aquifer is 0.25.
Determine the fractions of the expansibility of water and compressibility of the aquifer skeleton in
making up the storage coefficient of the aquifer?

Given,

Storage coefficient = S = 6.8 x 10⁻⁴

Thickness of aquifer = t = (10 + Name Code) m = 10 + 16 = 26 m

Porosity of the aquifer = n = 0.25
Density of the water = γ = 9810 N/m³
Compressibility of water = β = 4.673 x 10⁻¹⁰
m²/N
We know,

S = γ t (nβ + α)

Where,

α is the compressibility of the aquifer

6.8 x 10⁻⁴ = 9810 x 26 x (0.25 x 4.673 x 10⁻¹⁰+ α)

α = 2.55 x 10⁻⁹ m²/N

Now Expansibility of water

=ntβγ

= 0.25 x 26 x 4.673 x 10⁻¹⁰ x 9810

Expansibility of water = 2.98 x 10⁻7

Q.No.03: Three monitoring wells are used (as shown in Figure) to determine the direction of
groundwater flow in a confined aquifer. The piezometric heads in the wells are found to be 52
m in well 1, 49 m in well 2, and 56 m in well 3. Determine the direction of flow. Where a =
(Name Code) m

Given:

Piezometric heads of wall

H1 = 52 m , H2 = 49 m , H3 = 56 m

Where a = Name code = 16 m

Required:

Flow Direction = ?

Solution:

To find the flow direction first we should find the equipotential line between highest well
and lowest well, so

Equipotential line = L Middle well height- lowest well height

X D
= Highest well height- lowest well height

Where D is the distance between highest well height and lowest well height

Here by the geometry rule of isosceles triangle D = 2 x a = 2(16) = 32

Equipotential line = L 𝐻1−𝐻2 52−49
= ∗𝐷= ∗ 32 = 13.73 m
𝐻3−𝐻2 56−49

13.73 m
