Area Density of Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger Available In IST

HMT Lab
Area Density
It is defined as the ratio of hat transfer surface area of the heat exchanger
to its volume.
=

As
V

In our case shell and tube heat exchanger has following dimensions.
Ltube=Length of shell=500mm
D tube=Diameter of Tube=10 mm(outer diameter)
D shell =Diameter of shell=123.9 mm 124 mm
n=No . of Tubes=13

Calculations
Heat transfer Area

A s =n Dtube L
A s =13(3.14)(10 103 )(0.5)
2

A s =0.2041 m

Volume of the Shell

V shell = r 2 L
r=radius of shell=62 mm
3 2

V s hell =3.14 ( 6210 ) 0.5

V s hell =6.0350 103 m3

Now,

As
V

0.2041 m2
6.0350 103 m3

=33.818/m

So the area density of the available shell and tube heat exchanger in the lab
is approximately 34/m which is less than 700 so we may conclude that heat
exchanger is not compact
