VOICE CHANGE- INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE

Interrogative Sentence
The sentence which denotes Question-

QUESTION

YES/ NO ‘WH’

✓ YES/ NO questions are those which starts with an auxiliary verb and can be answered
only with the response of YES/ NO.

✓ ‘WH’ questions are those which starts with the ‘WH’ words (What, Which, Why, Where
etc.) and can’t be answered only with Yes/ NO response but we have to use at least
a few words/ phrase/ sentence to answer them.
Structure

YES/ NO ‘WH’
Aux. Verb + Sub + Main Verb+ Obj ‘Wh’ word+ Aux. verb + Sub + Main Verb+ Obj

Have you seen the tiger? Where have you seen the tiger?

Are you reading the book? What are you reading?

Did you do the work? When did you do the work?

Do they need any help? Why do they need any help?


Voice Change of YES/ NO Questions:
Have you seen the tiger?
Has the tiger been seen by you?
Rule:
1. Bring the Aux. verb at the beginning.

2. Put the object of the Active sentence.

3. Put the 3rd form (Past Participle) of the main verb.

4. Put the Subject of the Active voice followed by a ‘by’.

 Is the book being read by you?
 Did you do the work?
 Was the work done by you?
 Do they need any help?
 Is any help needed by them?
Voice Change of WH Questions:
Where have you seen the tiger?
Where has the tiger been seen by you?
Rule:
1. Keep the WH word at the beginning.
2. Put the Aux. verb after that.

3. Put the object of the Active sentence.

4. Put the 3rd form (Past Participle) of the main verb.

5. Put the Subject of the Active voice followed by a ‘by’.

 When will you take the file?
 When will the file be taken by you?
 Where had they put the books?
 Where had the books been put by them?
 What have you seen there?
 What has been seen by you there?
Some Exceptions…

‘Who’ type:
If the interrogative sentence starts with Who then there would be a
slight change in the rule-

Who has seen the tiger?


By whom has the tiger been seen?

Who opened the door?
