What is Text?
The word ‘text’ is derived from s Latin word ‘textile ‘means to
wave .it refers to the way words and sentences are woven
together.
A text is a passage of words that conveys a set of meanings to
the person who is reading it. It’s a body of written work, in
various forms and structures that can be words, phrases and
sentences that piece together a passage of written work.
.
A text can be written materials, such as books, magazines,
newspapers, or online content. But it can also be other things,
those that we may not associate with standard text. If we can
look at something with words and sentences, explore it, find
layers of meaning in it, and draw information and conclusions
from it, you’re looking at a text. The main types of text types
are narrative, descriptive, directing, and argumentative.
However, there can be different types of text in a text type
Text types
1-Fictional texts
Detective novel, detective story, drama, fable, fairy tale legend,
lyrics and narrative. Novel, picture stories, plays, poem, radio
drama, science fiction novel, short story sketch

2- Non-fictional texts
Advertisement, agenda, biography, booklet, news,
newspaper, timetable, announcement, weather forecast
and speech
Text importance
Text is important to us because it allows for the transmission of
knowledge, ideas, stories, and information across time and
space. Text enables us to record and preserve human
experiences, thoughts, and discoveries, and it serves as a
fundamental tool for education, documentation, literature, and
communication.

Text aim
Texts can have more than one purpose, eg a writer
could entertain and inform, or they could inform and persuade
the reader. Some types of non-fiction text have a specific
purpose. For example, travel writing describes a journey or a
place, and can be intended to persuade.

Purpose
There are a few basic purposes for texts; figuring out the basic
purpose leads to more nuanced text analysis based on its
purpose. Basic purposes of a text include:
 To inform – to describe, explain, or teach something to your
audience
 To persuade/argue – to get your audience to do something,
to take a particular action, or to think in a certain way
 To entertain – to provide your audience with insight into a
different reality, distraction, and/or enjoyment.
The author’s main idea and purpose in writing a text
determine whether you need to analyze and evaluate the
text.
In short, text is the fuel that drives communication, and
communication serves as a framework for society.
