◦ Speech bandwidth 100Hz to 7kHz
◦ Telephone bandwidth 300Hz to 3400Hz
◦ Video bandwidth 4MHz
Digital ( )
◦ Use two Direct Current (DC) components
4
Comparison of analog and digital signals
5
Usually use digital signals for digital data and analog
signals for analog data
Can use analog signal to carry digital data
◦ Modem
8
Data and signals
Note
9
▪ Data can be analog or digital.
▪ Analog data are continuous and take
continuous values.
▪ e.g. sound, video
10
• Signals can be analog or digital.
May be analog or digital data
Attenuated over distance -
Use amplifiers to boost signal -
Also amplifies noise
12
Concerned with content
Integrity endangered by noise, attenuation etc.
Repeater receives signal
Extracts bit pattern
Retransmits
Attenuation is overcome
Noise is not amplified
13
Digital technology
◦ Low cost LSI/VLSI technology
Integration
◦ Can treat analog and digital data similarly
14
Transmitter
Medium
◦ Guided medium وسائط موجهة Guided Medium Unguided Medium
e.g. twisted pair, optical fiber
15
Analog signal
Digital signal
16
Signal received may differ from signal transmitted
17
Transmission Impairment
18
Signal strength falls off with distance, & it depends on medium
Received signal strength:
◦ must be enough to be detected
◦ must be sufficiently higher than noise to be received without error
◦ Attenuation is an increasing function of frequency
21
Only in guided media
Propagation velocity varies with frequency
22
Additional signals inserted between transmitter and receiver
3.1 Thermal
◦ Due to thermal agitation of electrons
◦ Uniformly distributed, White noise
23
24
◦ A signal from one line is picked up by another
Data rate
◦ In bits per second
◦ Rate at which data can be communicated
wعرض الحزمة Bandwidth
◦ In cycles per second of Hertz
◦ Constrained by transmitter and medium
Noise:
Error rate

Connecting Device
27
6.1 Connecting Devices
28
Figure 6.1 Five categories of connecting devices
29
1)Repeaters
A physical layer device the acts on bits not on frames or packets
When a bit (0,1) arrives, the repeater receives it and regenerates it,
the transmits it onto all other interfaces
30
31
6.6
Figure 6.2 A repeater connecting two segments of a LAN
32
2)Hubs
Acts on the physical layer
Hub receives a bit from an adapter and sends it to all the other adapters
without implementing any access method.
does not do filtering (forward a frame into a specific destination or drop it)
just it copy the received frame onto all other links
33
3)Bridges
Acts on the data link layer (MAC address level)
Used to divide (segment) the LAN into smaller LANs segments, or to connect LANs
that use identical physical and data link layers protocol
Bridge does not send the received frame to all other interfaces like hubs and repeaters,
but it performs filtering which means:
34

35
Bridges Vs. Hubs
36
4)Switches
Usually used to connect individual computers not LANs like bridge.
Can operates in Full-duplex mode (can send and receive frames at the
same time over the same interface).
37
38
39
5) Routers
Switches and bridges isolate collision domains but forward broadcast messages
to all LANs connected to them. Routers isolate both collision domains and
broadcast domains.
Acts like normal stations on a network, but have more than one network
address (an address to each connected network).
