IGCSE CHEMISTRY JANUARY TEST-1

Chapter: Rates of Reaction

Extensive Questions
Q.1 The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide is catalyzed by manganese(IV) oxide. 2H2 O2
(aq) → 2H2O(l) + O2 (g) To 50 cm3 of aqueous hydrogen peroxide, 0.50 g of manganese(IV)
oxide was added. The volume of oxygen formed was measured every 20 seconds. The average
reaction rate was calculated for each 20 second interval.

(a) Explain how the average reaction rate, 2.4 cm3 / s, was calculated for the first 20 seconds.
(b) Complete the table.
(c) Explain why the average reaction rate decreases with time.
(d) The experiment was repeated but 1.0g of manganese(IV) oxide was added. What effect, if
any, would this have on the reaction rate and on the final volume of oxygen? What will be the
effect on the final volume of oxygen and what is the reason behind? (4 marks)

Q.2 Write a note on Haber’s process (6 marks)

SHORT QUESTIONS
Q.1 How will the position of equilibrium move by increasing pressure on this reaction?

Q.2 What is the effect of change of temperature on the position of equilibrium in the formation
of sulfur trioxide?
