A man, a monkey, and a horse were standing on the street corner. The monkey was playing
an accordion. The horse was singing. The man was playing a violin and collecting money.
And old lady stopped and admired the trio. “What a remarkable” trio you are! What an
amazing sight to see and hear!” she said.
The old lady dropped a ten dollar bill into the man’s hat.
“What a talented trio. Why aren’t you in a circus or on the stage?” she asked.
The man smiled at the lady. “What wonderful compliments you pay us, “he said, “but I
have a confession to make.” “A confession? How exciting!” said the old lady.
“Yes, a confession. A secret really.”
“I love secrets. I won’t tell anyone, I promise.”
“Well”, said the man. “To tell you the truth, the horse isn’t really very talented, He can not
sing.”
The horse cannot sing” But I can hear him singing!
“No, that’s the secret. The horse really cannot sing. The monkey is a ventriloquist!”

Listen first. Then read the story and answer the questions.
Al Reynolds was in the army. He was a good soldier. In fact, he wanted to be the best
soldier in the whole army. The other soldiers complained when they had to clean their rifles
every day. Al loved his rifle.
The others complained when they had to shine their boots. Al polished his boots until they
were like mirrors.
The other soldiers wanted to be free on weekends. They hated guard duty. But Al longed
for the chance to stand at the gate and guard the comp. Finally, Al’s name appeared in the
guard duty list for the first time. He was overjoyed!
“These are your orders”, explained the captain. “Admit only people in cars with security
badges. No one else is allowed to enter.” Al saluted and started to march back and forth in
front of the gate.
Soon a car with a four-star general arrived at the gate.
The car didn’t have security badge.
“Halt! Al called. “You can’t enter the gate without a security badge.” The general was very
irritated.
“Drive on, driver! Tell the idiot to move!” But Al was sure of his orders. He saluted the
general an asked, excuse me, general, this is my first day onguard duty. Do I shoot the
driver, or do I shot you?

Blue Jeans
Seventeen-year-old Levi Strauss came ti the United States from Germany in 1847. In the 1850s, he moved to
California and sold heavy doth for tents to the gold miners there.
Strauss noticed that the miners’ pants wore out quickly, so he began to make pants from the heavy tent
cloth. These pants became popular with the miners. In the 1860s, Strauss started using a softer cloth from
Nimes, France, called serge de Nimes. In English, de Nimes became denim. Strauss dyed the
pants a deep blue that did not show dirt. These became known as “blue jeans.” Soon cowboys and other
kinds of workers were all wearing jeans.
In the 1930s, jeans became fashionable for play as well as work. Children wore to school. Today jeans in
many colors and styles are mode and worn around the world.
3. Why did Levi Strauss change the material for his pants?

Sneakers have not always been on the feet of children around the world. In 1917, the U.S. Rubber Company
first made Keds, cloth shoes with rubber soles. All keds looked the same. They had black soles and brown
canvas tops. Sneakers changed little until the 1960s.
In the 1960s, a sneaker with a waffle sole was invented by a runner, Phil Knight, and his coach, Bill
Bowerman. Bowerman made the first waffle sole by heating a piece of rubber in his waffle iron at home.
This sole made it easier to run and not trip and fall. The shoe was made of nylon, which was lighter than
canvas. The design soon was on all athletic shoes, In less than ten years, the firs ked sneakers ha been
replaced by the new athletic shoes for sports and fashion.
