WEEK 13- THEMATIC 1

READ AND ANSWER
Read the passage below and answer the following questions.

Most of us don't think about what happens to our trash after we

throw it away. But did you know that our trash goes on a big journey?

In Malaysia, trash can end up in different places depending on how it

is managed. One place it can go is the landfill, which is like a big hole
in the ground where trash is buried. Landfills are managed by the local
government, and they try to control the smell by covering the trash
with soil or other materials. Another place trash can go is the
incinerator, which is a facility that burns trash to create energy.
Some trash can also be recycled, which means it is turned into new
products instead of being thrown away.

We need better machines to sort trash and find ways to handle our
own trash. Sometimes, people send their trash to other countries to
be recycled, but it doesn't always get recycled and just gets thrown
away. Some sneaky businessmen make money from it.

Did you know that Malaysia has been receiving a lot of plastic waste
from other countries? In fact, Malaysia has sent back 150 shipping
containers of plastic waste to countries like the United States,
United Kingdom, France, and Canada. The Malaysian government
doesn't want their country to be a "garbage dump" for the world. They
want to make sure that Malaysia is not overwhelmed with trash and
that it is properly managed. They are working on improving waste
collection, treatment, and management systems. They are
also educating Malaysians about waste segregation and
offering zero waste alternatives.
