TYPES OF WASTE MATERIALS
There’s no such thing as waste. Technically waste is unusable materials or substance which is
of no use, in other word it is a garbage. Garbage is mainly considered as a solid waste that includes
wastes from our houses (domestic waste), from schools, offices, (municipal wastes) from industries
and factories (industrial wastes) and produced in the farm (agricultural waste).
EXAMPLE
Different types of waste:
1.Domestic Waste- Also known as household waste, which are collected during household activities
like cooking, cleaning, Example: leaves, vegetable peels, used oil.
2. Commercial Waste- Commercial wastes are produced in schools, shops, and offices. Example:
plastic, paper.
3. Industrial Waste- These are the common wastes created in big factories and large
industries. Example: plastic, glass.
4. Agricultural Waste- Various wastes produced as a result of agricultural activities in the farm.
Example: Livestock manure, weeds, leaves.

HANDLING AND STORAGE
Hazardous wastes are wastes or products that have the potential to harm humans or the environment,
either now or in the future. Fortunately, there are many available options in disposing household
hazardous waste to protect the environment and keep our home safe. One of the best options is the
recycling program.
EXAMPLE
Below are the process you need to do before handling hazardous waste:

1.Keep the goods in their original containers if possible. If containers are leaking, use new containers
but never use food containers like soft drink bottles.

2.Don’t mix chemicals when decanting a substance into a new storage container.

3.Make sure all labels, including warning labels and manufacturer’s instructions, remain intact on the
packaging.

4.Store goods upright with lids secured tightly and out of the reach of young children.

5.Keep all ignition sources, such as matches, well away from the storage area.

6.Keep the storage area cool and dry.

7.Buy the smallest amount for your needs.

ACTIVITY: TRUE OR FALSE: Instructions: Read carefully the statement below. Write the word
TRUE if the statement is correct and False if it’s not. Write your answer on the space provided.
_____1. Buy more than your needs.
_____2. Keep the storage area wet and messy.
_____3. Keep all ignition sources, such as matches, well away from the storage area.
_____4. Store goods upright but lids wide open.
_____5. Make sure all labels, including warning labels and manufacturer’s instructions, remain intact
on the packaging.
_____6. Don’t mix chemicals when decanting a substance into a new storage container.
_____7. Keep the goods in their original containers if possible.
_____8. Hazardous wastes are waste that have the potential to harm humans or the environment.

IMPORTANCE OF PROPER WASTE MANAGEMENT
Proper waste management services apply to both unpopulated and populated areas. Because of the
danger of accumulated waste and toxins, it has also become essential to educate the people about
proper waste disposal and management. Just like other pressing matters in society, individuals need
constant reminder about the value of waste management services to take action and promote
sustainability. One of the main aspects to keep environment clean as there are many types of waste
which is necessary to keep managed so that it doesn’t spoil and litter the surroundings. Unwanted,
useless material also known as garbage, trash, rubbish, refuse is a major environmental issue
everywhere since the industrial revolution is waste. There are various methods of waste management
that are used to make surroundings clean and safe:
Landfills: It is the most common and known method of disposal used, it includes burying of garbage
in the land. Before dumping, eliminating of the odor is done.
Plasma gasification: This method is used during the treatment of solid waste, it undergone the
process by heating up and broken down to the smallest molecular bonds of waste which is done in
the vessel. It is the destruction of dangerous materials and waste. This is good source of renewable
energy.
Recycling: This is a process of converting waste into a new product. Recycling means the reduction
of energy, lessen of air pollution made, reduce the volume of landfills, and reduce the greenhouse
effect to prevent the mother earth being damaged.
Combustion: Is burning up at high temperature to convert them into residue or gaseous product.
This process is also called thermal treatment.
Composting: Is the act of collecting and storing plant material or organic matter so it can decay and
be added to soil to improve its quality: There should be more composting of garden and food waste.
Composting means less waste goes to landfills.
