Great, it sounds like you have a unique and interesting career story!
Here's an example of how you could answer an interview question
about your career path:

Interviewer: Can you tell me a little bit about your career background
and how you got into data engineering?

You: Sure, I actually started my career as a systems analyst, where I

worked for several years. However, about five years ago, I decided to
leave my job and start my own business. Unfortunately, due to some
personal issues, I had to close my business recently and I am now
looking to get back into the workforce.

Since I am starting fresh, I decided to pivot my career towards data

engineering. Although I didn't have any direct experience in this field, I
did work with SQL Server, SSIS, and Linux in my previous job, which I
believe will be useful in a data engineering role. Additionally, I've been
learning new skills such as Snowflake and Apache Spark to enhance my
abilities and stay up to date with the latest technologies.

I'm excited about the potential opportunities that a data engineering

role can offer, and I'm confident that my previous experience,
combined with my new skill set, will make me a strong candidate for
this position.

Based on your experience, here's an example of how you could answer

the question:

Interviewer: Can you tell me more about the specific projects you
worked on in your previous role as a systems analyst, and how those
experiences relate to the data engineering role you're interested in
now?

You: Sure, at my previous companies, I worked on a variety of projects

related to payment cards, ATM and POS machine configuration, and
Postilion switch. Specifically, I was responsible for implementation,
support, and configuration of payment-related technologies.

At Network International, I worked as a Senior Analyst for

implementation and support. In this role, I assisted in enhancing tier-1
applications to improve performance and reliability, analyzed
https://chat.openai.com/chat/d846a254-2f9d-4dae-aea7-908f82020779 5/46
transactions to generate reports and statistics, and contributed to
4/3/23, 10:48 PM Data Engineer Career Change

reducing deployment times for POS implementation by 30% by

implementing a streamlined deployment process.

At Opus Consulting Solutions, I was a Senior Associate for production

support, where I installed and configured the Postilion Realtime and
Office servers, performed disaster recovery activities on production
servers, and managed incident management and troubleshooting.

Finally, as a Senior System Software Engineer at VAM Systems, I

worked on several payment-related projects. For example, I configured
parameters for connectivity and message routing in Realtime Manager,
Realtime Applications, and Post Bridge for Money Transfer on ATMs,
MPOS (Mobile POS) for Mashreq Bank, and Mobile Number Update
through ATM for UAE and Qatar. I also developed ATM state and screen
flow for Salaam Points Display on ATM for Mashreq Bank.

All of these experiences required me to use SQL and Excel tools to

analyze daily, weekly, monthly, and annual transaction data, which I
believe will be highly relevant to a data engineering role. Additionally,
my experience in configuring and implementing payment-related
technologies, such as Postilion switch, will also be valuable in this role.

Sure, here's an example of how you could answer that question:

One particularly challenging project I worked on was the

implementation of the MPOS (Mobile POS) project for Mashreq Bank at
VAM Systems. The project required me to configure parameters for
connectivity and message routing in Realtime Manager, Realtime
Applications, and TermappISO, and achieve VISA, Master, and AMEX
certifications.

One of the major obstacles we faced during the project was ensuring the
stability and reliability of the solution in the production environment.
The MPOS solution was being used by a large number of customers, so
we had to make sure that any issues or downtime were minimized as
much as possible.

To address this, we implemented a rigorous testing process, both

environment. We also worked closely with the bank's IT and operations

teams to ensure that any issues were quickly identified and resolved.

In the end, the MPOS project was successfully implemented, and the
solution proved to be stable and reliable in the production
environment. This project was particularly challenging, but it was also
very rewarding to see the solution being used by so many customers
and helping to improve their experience with the bank.

Can you draft an answer, please?

1/1

Sure, here's an example of how you could answer that question:

One time when I had to troubleshoot and resolve a complex issue with a
payment system was when I was working at Network International as a
Senior Analyst in Implementation and Support. We were receiving
reports of increased transaction failures and declined transactions,
which was causing a lot of frustration for merchants and their
customers.

After investigating the issue, I discovered that the root cause was a
configuration problem with the Postilion switch, which was not routing
transactions correctly to the relevant banks. This was a complex issue
because it involved multiple components of the payment system, and
https://chat.openai.com/chat/d846a254-2f9d-4dae-aea7-908f82020779 10/46
4/3/23, 10:48 PM Data Engineer Career Change

we had to ensure that the fix did not cause any unintended
consequences.

To resolve the issue, I worked closely with the technical teams at the
banks and with our own development team to implement a solution
that addressed the configuration problem while also ensuring that
other components of the payment system were not affected. This
involved extensive testing and close collaboration with all stakeholders
to ensure that the solution was robust and effective.

In the end, the issue was resolved, and we were able to significantly
reduce the number of transaction failures and declined transactions.
This experience taught me the importance of being meticulous in
troubleshooting and problem-solving, and the value of close
collaboration and communication with stakeholders in resolving
complex issues.

The interviewer may ask the following question as a follow-up:

"What was the most challenging project you worked on in your

previous roles, and how did you approach it?"

Here's an example of how you could answer:

The most challenging project I worked on in my previous roles was

implementing the MPOS (Mobile POS) project for Mashreq Bank at
VAM Systems. The goal of the project was to enable merchants to
accept credit card payments using their mobile phones, which required
configuring multiple components of the payment system and obtaining
certifications from Visa, Mastercard, and AMEX.

To approach this project, I broke it down into smaller, more

manageable tasks and prioritized them based on their importance and
dependencies. I worked closely with
https://chat.openai.com/chat/d846a254-2f9d-4dae-aea7-908f82020779 the technical team, product 12/46
4/3/23, 10:48 PM Data Engineer Career Change

owners, and stakeholders to ensure that everyone was aligned on the

project goals and timeline.

One of the biggest challenges we faced during the project was obtaining
certifications from the payment networks. This required extensive
testing and validation, and we had to iterate multiple times to address
issues and ensure that the system was compliant with their
requirements.

To address this challenge, I worked with our development team to

identify and address the issues as quickly as possible, and we put in
place a robust testing and validation process to ensure that we were
meeting the requirements of the payment networks. I also maintained
close communication with the stakeholders to keep them informed of
our progress and any issues that arose.

In the end, we were able to successfully complete the project and obtain
the necessary certifications from the payment networks. This
experience taught me the importance of breaking down complex
projects into manageable tasks, the value of effective communication
and collaboration, and the importance of meticulous testing and
validation.

"Can you tell me about a particularly challenging data engineering

project you've worked on in the past and how you overcame the
challenges?"

Here's an example of how you could answer:

One of the most challenging data engineering projects I worked on was

for a large retail client that needed to consolidate data from multiple
sources, including e-commerce transactions, in-store sales data, and
social media data. The project involved designing and building a new
data pipeline that could handle large volumes of data and deliver
accurate and timely insights to the business.

One of the main challenges we faced was ensuring the accuracy and
consistency of the data, particularly with respect to the different data
formats and data quality issues we encountered. To address this
challenge, we implemented a robust data validation process that
included automated data quality checks, data profiling, and data
cleansing techniques.

Another challenge we faced was the sheer volume of data we were

dealing with. To address this, we implemented a scalable data
processing architecture that included distributed computing, parallel
processing, and other optimization techniques. We also leveraged
cloud-based technologies, which allowed us to quickly scale up and
down as needed and minimized infrastructure costs.

Overall, the project was a success, and we were able to deliver accurate
and timely insights to the business, enabling them to make better-
informed decisions. The project taught me the importance of careful
planning, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to changing
requirements and unexpected challenges.

Sure, here's a possible answer:

One of the most challenging problems I faced in my previous role was

dealing with a sudden surge in transaction volume during the holiday
season. As you can imagine, the increase in transaction volume put a lot
of pressure on the payment processing systems, which resulted in
slower transaction processing times and ultimately caused frustration
for our customers.

To solve the problem, I first analyzed the existing system

infrastructure to identify the bottlenecks and areas for improvement. I
collaborated with the technical team to optimize the server
configurations and increase processing capacity. We also improved the
monitoring and alerting systems to quickly identify and resolve issues.

I also worked with the business team to implement a proactive

https://chat.openai.com/chat/d846a254-2f9d-4dae-aea7-908f82020779 18/46
approach to communicating with customers about potential delays

during peak periods. This helped to manage their expectations and

minimize frustration. Additionally, I analyzed the transaction data to
identify patterns and trends, which helped us plan better for future
peak periods.

Overall, it was a challenging problem, but we were able to successfully

manage the increased volume and maintain high levels of customer
satisfaction.
