Aim the students will be able to discover the differences between countable nouns
(a/an) and uncountable nouns (x) in singular.

Format Combination (deductive method + inductive method)
1. Show the students a picture of a picnic with many kinds of food and drink and ask them to
match with given nouns.
2. Next, the teacher asks the students the difference among these nouns (why “apple, orange, ice
cream, umbrella” go with an, why “pizza, bear, banana,tree, bee” go with a and why before a tree an apple
the nouns “milk, cheese, orange juice" without a/an ) and after a few minutes (2-3 minutes),
teacher invites some students sharing their discovery. an orange an egg
3. Then, teacher explains these given words in the task are nouns ( names of people, places or

4. The teacher would group these words to 3 group words: adding a, adding an and without
a/an in order to explain each situation based on the examples. orange juice rice
• Adding a, an before a noun: use in singular noun (number <2 or =1)
• Use an if a singular noun begins with a vowel: u,e,o,a,i ( uể oải) a pizza a book
• Use a if a singular noun begin with a consonant (the remaining except u,e,o,a,i)
• Without a/an before a noun: uncountable nouns (cannot add number before a noun- transfer
to real context)
E.g: Cannot say 1 milk (một sữa) or 1 cheese (1 phô mai)
5. Practice: show some real things and let them decide whether they would use “a” or “an” for
the object
E.g. Show a notebook and question the students “ A notebook? An notebook? Or
Notebook?”
