UNDERSTAND
Cleaning Products

Ever since the pandemic brought about by

CoViD-19 have emerged, your daily activities may
perhaps switch on to browsing the net, logging on to
your favorite social media accounts, streaming videos
and most specially doing the daily house chores.

Household chores such as cleaning can be tedious

especially when lots of dirt are involved and there are no cleaning materials available. This
tiresome chore can be lessened through the use of common household chemicals known as
cleaning agents. These contain active ingredients/compounds that can remove stains and
foul smell on surface, disinfects surfaces and kill bacteria and fungi.

SAQ-1: Give at least two household chores and the required cleaning agents used
for such chores. Explain.

There are generally four types of cleaning agents; acidic, alkaline, neutral and degreaser.
All of which usually manufactured as powders, liquids or sprays.

The following are examples of cleaning agents:

1. Laundry detergent 5. Toilet cleaner
2. Dishwashing detergent soap 6. Drain cleaner
3. All-purpose cleaner 7. Window/glass cleaner
4. Surface/ Floor disinfectant or cleaner

SAQ-2: What do you call to substances that are used to remove

dirt, stain, or clutter on surfaces?

SAQ-3: Why do you think cleaning agents must contain chemicals

Checkpoint! that are able to kill bacteria, virus and fungi?

Compounds in Cleaning Agents

The table below presents the different common compounds that are found in cleaning
agents.

Compound What is it? Cleaning agent

Ammonia On its own or as an ingredient in Window cleaner
many household cleaning products, Household ammonia
ammonia can be used to clean a
variety of household surfaces – from
tubs, sinks and toilets to bathroom
and kitchen countertops and tiles.
Ammonia also is effective at
breaking down household grime or
stains from animal fats or vegetable
oils, such as cooking grease and
wine stains. Because ammonia
evaporates quickly, it is commonly
used in glass cleaning solutions to
help avoid streaking.

Sodium Hypochlorite Consumers can use diluted chlorine Bleach

bleach solutions to help disinfect
household surfaces in bathrooms
and the kitchen. Using bleach
solutions to disinfect frequently
touched surfaces also can help
prevent the spread of colds, flu,
norovirus and other infectious
illnesses. During natural disasters,
such as flooding, chlorine bleach
can disinfect contaminated surfaces

Sodium hydroxide Sodium hydroxide is used to Liquid sosa (drain declogger)

manufacture soaps and a variety of Lye
detergents used in homes and
commercial
applications. Chlorine bleach is
produced by combining chlorine and
sodium hydroxide. Drain cleaners
that contain sodium
hydroxide convert fats and grease
that can clog pipes into soap, which
dissolves in water.

Potassium hydroxide Potassium hydroxide is an Oven cleaners

extremely versatile cleaning agent.
For example, potassium hydroxide
is found in varied items such as
liquid soaps, lotions, shampoos,
hairsprays, and denture cleaners,
but is also found in more industrial
compounds such as oven cleaners,
drain cleaners, driveway and
concrete cleaners, in non-

phosphate detergents, and in drain

and pipe cleaners.

While it is more common to use

sodium hydroxide for soap,
potassium hydroxide soaps are
actually more soluble in water and
are better for the environment.
Potassium hydroxide soaps are also
referred to as 'soft soaps'. Though
not quite as popular as sodium
soaps, potassium soaps are
produced in various liquid
concentrations and are often used in
combination with sodium soaps, for
example, in shaving products and
also in the textile industry.

Hydrochloric acid Hydrochloric acid can be an Toilet cleaner

ingredient in household Muriatic acid
cleaners such as toilet bowl
cleaners, bathroom tile cleaners and
other porcelain cleaners, due to its
corrosive properties that help clean
tough stains.

Sodium bicarbonate Sodium bicarbonate is a common Baking sod

ingredient in cleaning, detergent and
degreasing products. In cleaning
products, sodium bicarbonate can
react with vinegar to create a
solution that helps unclog drains or
remove grime in ovens. Its slight
abrasiveness is extremely efficient
for eliminating burnt residues or
grease.

The chemical properties of sodium

bicarbonate can also help enhance
the efficiency of laundry detergent
by increasing the water’s pH level,
which helps to repel dirt from fibers,
leading to fresher laundry

Borax Borax is a powdery white substance, Household borax

also known as sodium borate, sodium
tetraborate, or disodium tetraborate.
It’s widely used as a household
cleaner and a booster for laundry
detergent. It’s a combination of boron,
sodium, and oxygen.

Sodium bisulfate Also known as sodium acid sulfate, Toilet cleaner

can be found in toilet bowl cleaners.
It is a compound made by combining
sodium, hydrogen, sulfur, and

oxygen ions. It is a poison and

should be used with extreme
caution.

Let’s Practice! (Write your answers on the answer sheet provided for you)

Go around your house and look for some cleaning agents. Inform your parents/guardians
that you will use these cleaning agents for the purpose of accomplishing the task in this part of
the CapSLET. Seek for an assistance especially with those cleaning agents that you are not
familiar with. List all the cleaning agents that you can find in your house. Use the table below
for your guidance.

Cleaning agents Used for? Active Ingredients

REMEMBER
Key Points

 Cleaning agent are substances that are used to remove dirt and foul odor on
surfaces.
 Cleaning agents mostly contain active ingredients or compounds that disinfect
surfaces and kills microorganism such as bacteria and fungi.
