So, this book beat Wlewa to print. Had you asked me a few months back if Volume 3 would be ready so
quick, I would have told you no. A few funny things happen on the way to production, not the least of which
is a handful of very talented and passionate creatives approaching me and asking for a chance to help with
the line. So, I took a chance, farmed out some assignments, and things started to roll. Originally, I wanted
Tools of Extinction to be a relatively cheap product, as the number of Savage Age fans that are going to
purchase this book will be far less than Vol 1 and 2, but I had so much good content, I didn’t want to hold
back.
When we talked about fetishes and talens, I charged the team with doing some new stuff. While the Savage
Age is set in our collective deep past, in terms of magic and spirits, it is much more exciting than even the
modern day. Paradoxically, the father you go into Werewolf’s history, the more advanced spirit-tech becomes.
We wanted to see how far we could go with it. We wanted more than just “totems” we wanted to redefine
how some iconic totems work – which led to the multidimensional totems. Even our “standard” totems were
rebuilt with a specific eye on how we could connect the Savage Age with the Apocalypse. The same, of course,
goes for the fetishes and talens. Each one was discussed and hashed out in the group with an eye to answering
“why is this cool?” (as opposed to the more mundane “how is this cool?”).
The goal was to create mechanics that set the Savage Age apart from the Apocalypse – but always with the
intent that our Savage Age offerings could be used with minimal prep in a traditional Apocalypse game.
That Paul Way art, huh? That is what makes this book really great, I think. Our writing is top notch, and
in some cases, pushes mechanical boundaries – but Paul’s work on this product really knocked it out of the
park. Images of inanimate objects can be pretty boring, but Paul worked his magic, did his research, and
produced some amazing and evocative images.
This book is probably never going to turn a profit. There is well over $600 of new artwork in Volume 3,
and with the new writers, they need to get paid as well. That is just the reality of vanity publishing. At some
point, I will need to cut my financial losses… BUT TODAY IS NOT THAT DAY! We still have more coming
– Wlewa, Broken Brother, and a new look at the Camazotz. And I really love working with the dev group,
so expect our standards to increase, not decrease.
That said, if you made it this far, please consider promoting Savage Age to your friends (or nabbing the
products you might not have yet). A few more purchases of our other Savage Age products is a big deal – not
just financially but also to build excitement by the Savage Team.
See you in a few.
