Workbook 6
1. Explain and elaborate the principle behind an Air compressor.
- Air compressor is a machine that converts the power into energy using air. The
principle of an air compressor is simply producing pressurized air. From the
name itself, it compresses the air and when the air is compressed, the volume of
it will decrease but its pressure will increase. This happens because of the help
of a piston. When the piston goes downward, the air molecules will be
compressed and it will create a vacuum.
2. List down at least 8 components of a 2 stage reciprocating air compressor and
briefly explain its purpose.

Component Part Purpose

1. Inlet valve Its function is to suck air from the source

outside of the machine and bring it to the
compressor cylinder.

2. Cylinder A cylinder main function is to compress

air through the help ofthe piston.

3. Piston It is the one who helps the cylinder in

compressing the air. It moves up and
down in the cylinder causing the air to be
compressed.

4. Connecting rod It is the one who keeps the crankshaft

and piston connected. The connecting rod
is the basis of the movement of the
piston.

5. Intercooler From the word itself, it is used to make

the air cool. Its function is to reduce the
temperature of the air before it gives the
air to the cylinder.

6. Outlet valve The main function of this valve is to

discharge the processed and compressed
air. It is connected to the cylinder.

7. Aftercooler Aftercooler is used as a heat exchanger.

It remove the heat of the compressed air
so that it will be ready to use by the air
operated equipment

8. Air receiver Its function is simply to contain the

compressed air before using it into the
piping system and machinery onboard.
