UNIT 7: EDUCATION SYSTEMS - SPEAKING

Exercise 1. Look at the IELTS Speaking part 3 questions and practice answering
them. In your response, add the connectives and discourse markers, and give
recommendations when needed.
1. Is higher education too expensive in your country?
2. Should all students pay for their university education?
3. How should students spend their summer vacations?
4. What do you think of the education system in Vietnam?
5. How important do you think education is to an individual?
6. What do you think are the major problems in the Vietnamese education system?
7. How important do you think the computer is in education today? Are there any
subjects computers cannot teach today?
8. What do you think are the best qualities a good teacher should have?

Exercise 2. [IELTS Speaking Practice] Practice answering the following questions.


IELTS Speaking Part 2: You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes.
You have one minute to think about what you’re going to say. You can make some notes
if you wish.
Topic 1: Describe an interesting event in your school. You should say:

● What was the event?

● When was the event?

● Why was it interesting?

● And explain how you felt about it


Topic 2: Describe something that can help you concentrate on work/study. You should
say:

● What it is

● How it helps you

● What you think about it

Topic 3: Describe some useful skills you learned in a math class from your primary/ high
school. You should say:

● What the skills were

● How you learned them

● Who taught you

● Why they were useful to you

Topic 4: Describe an interesting subject that you learned at school. You should say:

● What the subject was

● What your teacher was like

● How long you studied this subject

● Explain why it was interesting to you

Topic 5: Describe an experience when you taught someone to do something new. You
should say:

● When and where it happened

● Whom you taught


● What you taught him/her

● How that person felt about it

IELTS Speaking Part 3:


1. Why do you think some people like doing new things?
2. What problems can people have when they try new activities for the first time?
3. Do you think it’s best to do new things on your own or with other people? Why?
4. What kinds of things do children learn to do when they are very young? How
important are these things?
5. Do you think children and adults learn to do new things in the same way? How is their
learning style different?
6. Some people say that it is more important to be able to learn new things now than it
was in the past. Do you agree or disagree with that? Why?
7. What are the difference between high school education and university education?
8. In high school in Vietnam, are there many opportunities for students to gain practical
working experience? What about university?
9. What skills do you think are most important for young school leavers?
10. What work skills do you think will be most important in the future?
