General Information About Columbia
Colombia is the fifth largest country in Latin America and has the world’s second largest
population of Spanish-speaking people.

Located in the northwest of South America at the coast of Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. The
neighboring countries are Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador and Panama.

Colombia began a new political chapter as it started with it's inauguration of Gustavo
Petro, who is the country’s first-ever leftlist president and former guerilla.
What power(s) does … have most of?
Colombia mostly consists of Soft Power –? EXPLAIN MORE PLEASE

The ability to influence other countries without resorting to coercion or force by

appealing to their interests and values is known as soft power. Sometimes, power
consists of the capacity to coax as opposed to coerce. In other words, soft power
entails influencing other people's choices through attractiveness and appeal.
Types of power that affects Columbia
Question: With specific reference to a case study, explain how states may use
hard power to interact with other states (4)
Hard power is the type of power where one or
more group (in this case a country) threatens another
group or damages another group in order to receive what
they are looking for. In most cases the group threatening
(oppressor) is stronger than the group being threatened
(oppressed). For example, since Colombia is the world
leading producer of cocaine, and the US is the world
leading consumer of cocaine. The US has been trying to
stop or reduce rather, the supply of cocaine entering into
it for many years now. They did this by supplying aid to
the Colombian military and tactical aid in order to use
hard power against these drug barons. VERY GOOD

FORMAT.
Theory and IR
Choose 4-5 events/issues that your expert country has faced/been involved with.

Using theories, explain why the event played out as it did and why your country
acted in the manner they did.

1. Make the point (the event issue)

2. provide the evidence (the details of what happened)
3. Evaluate the outcome (using the theory)

Do this for each 3-5 event/issue.

Gaining recognised statehood and theory
Read p15, 16, 17, 18 (up until “how states organise themselves”)

1. What is the legitimate way for a state(s) to rectify disputed borders?

2. Choose one of the examples on p15-16; next read theories of sovereignty on
p 17-18. How might these theories be used to explain what happened in your
two examples?
3. Consider the examples of “is state sovereignty being eroded” on p 16-17 as
well as the examples for the essay. How far to you agree with the statement
that state sovereignty is being eroded? Make two supporting points (with
explanation and evaluation) and one counterclaim.
Is sovereignty still relevant in the 21st century?
Most arguments still revolve around sovereignty, not just in terms of law and international relations. Despite
numerous arguments to the contrary, realists who want to prevent outside forces from interfering with the highest
decisions and operations of government continue to value and nurture the earlier perception in the context of the
state’s right to take over specific usage of power for it's territory and population.

Task: Comparing and contrasting your country and one
other country from your group of countries.
Consider how your country has created a legitimate state and how it is similar or different to the other country. 1-2 points of similarity and/or
difference.

The type of state that Colombia is considered to be is a unitary presidential constitutional republic. The state is a rational-legal legitamacy.
This means that the country is governed by a President, who is both the head of state and the head of government. The President is elected by
popular vote and holds executive power. The country also has a bicameral congress which has the power to legislate, and a constitutional court that
has the power to interpret the constitution. Additionally, Colombia is a federal state, meaning that it is divided into different regions or states, each
with its own government, but still being a part of the national government.

Legitimacy in Colombia is conferred through a combination of constitutional and electoral processes. The Constitution of Colombia is the
supreme law of the country and establishes the framework for the government and the rights of citizens. The Constitution is amended through a
process of legislative and popular approval. The President and members of Congress are elected through free and fair elections, which are monitored
by the National Electoral Council and international organizations. Additionally, the judiciary is independent and has the power to interpret the law
and hold public officials accountable.
How has a personality cult has been developed in North Korea and explain how
this contributes to the legitimacy of the North Korean Site
In North Korea, a personality cult has been developed around the ruling Kim family to
legitimize the government's authority. The cult is pervasive and shapes all aspects of society, including
education, media, and culture. The Kims are portrayed as benevolent leaders with supernatural
abilities and are the only ones who can lead the country to greatness. The cult also promotes the idea
of self-reliance, nationalism and the leadership of the ruling Kim family. It creates an illusion of
stability and continuity and helps justify the government's isolationist policies.
