Nguyễn Hoàng Vân (ID: 22004079)

Task Description:
Study the possible topic ideas for the individual project assignments Links to an external site..
Choose 3 topics that you might be interested in - OR come up with your OWN problem that
you’d like to solve!

In the submission document, include ALL of the following:

Part 1: Three topics of your choice (specify the X components of the topics)

Part 2: Answer the questions about EACH OF the three topics

1. Why is it important to solve this problem?

2. What do you already know about this topic?
3. Where can you find credible information for all sections of this report? What kind of
research will you have to do (primary, secondary, both)?
4. The purpose of a problem-solving report is to offer actionable solutions that the report
audience can implement. Who has the power or authority to solve this problem?
5. What are your personal goals for this assignment?

Part 3: Do the PAIBOC analysis of one of the topics of your choice (the most interesting one for
you) for the REPORT assignment (see Figure 15.1 in Braun)

Part 1: Three topics of my choice

1. The Kpop industry plays a huge role in normalizing issues that go against morality and
social norms.
2. Rate of street begging among school-age youth is rising in Vietnam.
3. The number of fake university degrees and certificates from unrecognised institutions is
rising in Vietnam.
Part 2: Answer the questions about EACH OF the three topics

Topic 1: The Kpop industry plays a huge role in normalizing issues that go against morality
and social norms.

● Why is it important to solve this problem?

The Kpop industry has tremendous cultural influence, especially among youth, so addressing
issues that undermine morality and norms is important to guide positive development.

● What do you already know about this topic?

I'm generally aware that some aspects of the Kpop industry like overly sexualized content or
unrealistic body standards have received criticism for potentially influencing fans in problematic
ways. However, more research is needed to fully understand the scope of these issues and their
social impact.

● Where can you find credible information for all sections of this report? What kind of
research will you have to do (primary, secondary, both)?
I'll need to conduct secondary research using academic databases and credible news sources to
analyze peer-reviewed studies, statistics, and expert commentary on the influence of Kpop and
how certain content normalizes anti-social behaviors. Primary research like surveys of Kpop fans
may also provide valuable data.

● The purpose of a problem-solving report is to offer actionable solutions that the report
audience can implement. Who has the power or authority to solve this problem?
Kpop entertainment companies and artists have significant influence over the content and
messaging promoted. Regulatory bodies could also implement policies addressing problematic
aspects to guide positive change. Moreover, I think the audience can also contribute to solving
this problem, for example by calling for a boycott of wrong behavior or fighting for correct
awareness. Next, the celebrities have to be responsible for the content, images and value they
bring to fans.

● What are your personal goals for this assignment?

To gain a nuanced understanding of these complex issues through thorough research, and offer
practical, ethically-sound recommendations that various stakeholders could adopt to curb
negative influences while preserving artistic expression.
Topic 2: Rate of street begging among school-age youth is rising in Vietnam.

● Why is it important to solve this problem?

Widespread school absenteeism can undermine Vietnam's development by limiting children's
education and future opportunities. It also poses welfare concerns if more youth are living on the
streets.

● What do you already know about this topic?

Poverty and lack of access to education are likely contributing factors, as seen in other
developing nations. However, the specific root causes in Vietnam need clarification through
research.

● Where can you find credible information for all sections of this report? What kind of
research will you have to do (primary, secondary, both)?
I'll conduct secondary research using Vietnamese government data sources, UNICEF reports, and
academic studies evaluating poverty trends, education access, and street child issues. Primary
surveys of affected communities may also provide useful insights.

● The purpose of a problem-solving report is to offer actionable solutions that the report
audience can implement. Who has the power or authority to solve this problem?
Vietnamese local and national government agencies overseeing education, social welfare, and
poverty alleviation would be key to implementing solutions. Furthermore, each individual is also
the one who can change this situation.

● What are your personal goals for this assignment?

To understand this issue through a culturally-sensitive lens, identify its root causes, and
recommend data-driven, community-focused solutions that relevant stakeholders in Vietnam
could adopt to promote education access and child welfare.
Topic 3: The number of fake university degrees and certificates from unrecognised
institutions is rising in Vietnam.

● Why is it important to solve this problem?

It's important because fake degrees undermine the integrity and credibility of higher education in
Vietnam. They also negatively impact the Vietnamese job market and economy if employers
cannot reliably verify qualifications. This issue needs to be addressed to safeguard standards and
opportunities.

● What do you already know about this topic?

While fake credentials are a global problem, the specific trends and factors driving their rise in
Vietnam require further research to understand. Several reports suggest unregulated institutions
and demand for qualifications may be contributing to the growing issue there.

● Where can you find credible information for all sections of this report? What kind of
research will you have to do (primary, secondary, both)?
I will conduct secondary research using reports from government reports and other credible
resources, evaluating trends in Vietnam. Primary research like interviews with employers,
universities, and credential evaluation services in Vietnam may provide useful insights.

● The purpose of a problem-solving report is to offer actionable solutions that the report
audience can implement. Who has the power or authority to solve this problem?
The Vietnamese government agencies overseeing education, employment, and law enforcement
need to strengthen regulations and oversight of universities and credentials. In addition, citizens
must fiercely eliminate the use and sale of fake degrees.

● What are your personal goals for this assignment?

To gain a nuanced cultural understanding of this issue through comprehensive research on
Vietnam specifically. I aim to identify practical recommendations that stakeholders in Vietnam's
education and business sectors could reasonably adopt to curb credential fraud while still
promoting access to quality higher education opportunities. An ethically-focused solution is
needed.
Part 3: Do the PAIBOC analysis of one of the topics of your choice (the most interesting one for
you) for the REPORT assignment (see Figure 15.1 in Braun)

P-Purpose:
The purpose of this report is to analyze how certain aspects of the Kpop industry may negatively
influence social and cultural norms, especially among youth audiences, and identify
recommendations for balanced reform.

Audience:
The key audiences for this report may include Kpop entertainment companies/artists,
government regulators, researchers analyzing media influence, and concerned citizens/parent
groups.

Importance:
This issue warrants examination given Kpop's global popularity and potential to shape
cultural/social norms, especially for youth. Addressing problems is important to guide healthy
development and curb negative influences.

Background:
Kpop plays a dominant role in pop culture worldwide. However, some content may undermine
well-being by promoting unhealthy behaviors or they may promote controversial ideas against
social value. Critics argue for balanced reform that preserves creative expression.

Objectives:
- Understand scope/impacts of criticized aspects through research.
- Identify recommendations for balanced reform that curb problems while respecting
artistic freedom

Constraints:
Solutions must consider cultural norms, business interests, and artistic expression rights to
achieve balanced reform. Lack of consensus on where to draw lines complicates policy changes.
