COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE SOCIAL IMPACTS OF TELEVISION AND SOCIAL MEDIA.

I. Opening Statement

Social media and television have permeated every aspect of daily life in the age of modern
technology. Both media have become extremely popular and have had a variety of social effects. The
way individuals view the world has been significantly impacted by social media and television. We
shall examine and contrast the societal effects of television and social media in this essay.

II. 1st Review Related Literature

According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, about 69% of Americans own at least
one smartphone and about 97% of them use social media. (Perrin, 2019) Technology has made
social media easily accessible and people now depend on it to communicate. Television was the
most popular medium of entertainment before social media appeared. It has had a significant impact
on the cultural, economic and social aspects of people's lives. Television shows have helped shape
how people wear, what they learn, and influence their behavior. Television also serves as a source of
information on events of historical significance, such as the assassination of President John F.
Kennedy and the 2001 New York terrorist attacks. Social media has disrupted the way people
communicate; it creates new ways for people to share information and provides a platform for new
voices to emerge.

III. Analysis/ Interpretation of the 1st RRL

It is clear from the Pew Research Center report that social media has a big influence on society. People may
now openly voice their thoughts on social media, which has cultivated a democratic atmosphere. People are
now more able to connect with one another without having to be physically close to one another, which has
helped to bind them together. However, prior to the development of social media, television was mostly
utilized for entertainment purposes. Television had an effect on culture and society, but it was more passive,
and viewers had no say in what they watched.

IV. General Conclusion:

In conclusion, because social media gives users the ability to produce, post, and share information, it
has made audiences more engaged. On the other side, a smaller group of producers, writers, and
network executives exercised more control over television. However, as television had a huge role to
forming the cultural and social values of the masses during the 20th century, its influence was greater
than that of social media.

V. Closing Statement:

Overall, both television and social media have brought immense social impact on society. As
technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how it shapes and changes how people
consume media. There are debates on the benefits and drawbacks of both television and social
media, but what is evident is that both mediums have become an inextricable part of modern-day life.
